  • Rich shows you how to make a solar wax extractor (melter) the quick and easy way using items you might already have in your garage. Plus a tip for those in cooler climates with a lower sun angle. One thing he didn’t mention is that the plywood underneath the box is attached to the front of the box with two hinges. This keeps it stable. Let us know if you have any questions!

    Genius design. Please make a follow up vid showing this actually melting wax. I've got more rain water than I know what to do with. Thanks for the advice.

    What a cool build! Can you add a coffee filter or cotton cloth to the spout end to filter it totally?

      Not really, even a piece of #8 wire mesh can cause a log jam at the spout. You have to melt the wax again in a double boiler to pour it into molds and that is the time to run it through a filter. Now, you can lay a piece of fine filter cloth on top of the paint tray and put the comb on top of that and the wax melts and passes through the cloth and leaves most of the slumgum behind. There is a trade off. If you make the solar melter too efficient then the wax can get too hot and degrade. I have a lot of experience with solar cookers and made my first wax extractor too efficient and the wax was smoking as it melted. That would have run through the kind of filter you describe, but the wax is light brown instead of golden and has a smoky odor.
      Not good.

    Brilliant design using "found" items. Thank you for demonstrating this!
    One question: do you put a piece of screen or some other filter media inside the paint tray across the outflow hole? Or do you just let the wax & all the other gunk it contains, like bee parts, etc. also flow out with the wax, then hope it forms a layer in the catch-tray that you can cut off later?

      Actually, the wax goes into the “sheer” which is a very fine mesh. All the gunk stays in the sheer mesh.

    How do you prevent the melted wax from exiting the bottom tray of the whole box is propped up at an angle? Thanks!

    • @southflbeekeepingwithrich
      @southflbeekeepingwithrich  2 роки тому +1

      It’s not that great an angle, and the bottom tray is fairly deep. Plus even if it were completely filled, the paint tray doesn’t hold that much comb to start with. So add it all together and it’s not a problem.

    It appears that the feet of the paint tray are sitting in the silicone catch pan (2:13-2:50 time stamp). How do you avoid the wax encasing the tray feet? Great Concept. I will be stealing this and adapting to use up in New England. Thanks!

    • @southflbeekeepingwithrich
      @southflbeekeepingwithrich  2 роки тому

      I don’t avoid the feet in the pan, because the wax usually peels right off. However you could put a brace on either side of the box and a cross piece to rest the tray on, instead of the feet. Let me know how it works for you.
