As someone with hereditary joint problems I really appreciate this video because my left ankle has been effected by them almost my entire life and sometimes I worry when it’s acting up and I need to use my brace that I’ve unknowingly injured it so this is very helpful!
Incredibly helpful to someone who loves hiking! Question though, what about swelling? Immediately after injuring my ankle, point C swelled to a large painful bump. At the time I treated it as a sprain but now I’m wondering if it was actually fractured.
Swelling can be both soft tissue and bony issues, Often tenderness is related to ligament injuries, hence why the positive predictive value is only 1 in 3 will have a fracture
Ironically, dr Gill filmed this video on a terrain DESIGNED to break ankles. 😆 Thank you, dr Gill, for another amazing lecture. This one is quite new to me. 💪
I actually rolled my ankle about two years ago at work. Had to limp my way to my car and into bed, but I kept it elevated and on ice over night, then took the next day or two off, and I was fine. Now my only foot-related problems are my flat arches. On the subject of sprained body parts, could you do a video on how to identify/diagnose sprained wrists? I’ve sprained both of mine over the past year, and I think my job might have had something to do with it (I load/unload packages from semi trucks.)
I'm very blessed on that side. I've rolled my ankles a lot, at very nasty angles, and I mean reeeaaally nasty. got in actual pain very few times, and actually never got injured in my entire life. The worst I could think of, I was in pain for like a whole afternoon. A couple days ago, i slept in a bump hole on wet grass. Slided at a 50-60 degrees angle inwards, crossed my legs, almost fell. And I'm overweight, almost obese. But all I felt at this moment was ridiculous (and lucky). I got my balance back, went ahead and walked a good kilometer forth and back (avoided the damn hole back) before climbing the stairs towards my 3rd floor. I have freaking titanium ankles. Or rather, rubber ankles.
Cuando hay fractura en la epífisis distal de tibia o fíbula, si haces percusión en la diáfisis o epífisis proximal se produce un aumento momentáneo de la intensidad del dolor en la zona de fractura, algo que no ocurre en los esguinces.
I have broken both ankles and a wrist (one more to go!). The first one (ankle), I walked home 7 blocks from our senior year event afterward, and decided to get a ride to to the medical center the following morning. And that is the number one reason not to drink excessively before going to a carnival featuring an inflatable jousting arena :P So I am glad to see there are specific pain tests even if you can walk!
@@DrJamesGill Oh that was a while ago now, everything healed up fine, although my wrist I slacked off on the physical therapy and it took a couple years to get back to normal strength. Just to be clear, these were separate incidents! Whew, all three at once would've been bad indeed :)
I jumped down a staircase Right foot first and landed on something that twisted my ankle with all my weight behind it. It hurt really bad and my foot went blue and really swollen and sore. X-ray showed no fracture to the bones. Doctors said that the soft tissue will heal themselves without any surgery. Its over 10 years ago but it still hurts just a little when I do certain exercise.
Unfortunately I think we are poor at correlating healed with perfectly returned to normal. Frankly I think all injuries to ankles should have physio therapy offered
@@DrJamesGill Yeah and everywhere the ground is very uneven in a lot of cities Scotland and England and too many people keep falling due to unkept roads and not really enough path ways that haven’t been taken by the Land since the 1950s so a lot of people have to walk on uneven roads to get places
We are finally, after all these years out of the medical room.
We’ve still a few to do!

The sound quality in this video is perfect
Thanks for the info! I recently sprained my ankle, and now ankle sprains have become a bit of a special interest for me.
Oh dear. Hopefully you’ve had good after care?
@@DrJamesGill I'm four months post-sprain and I'm in physical therapy because it doesn't seem to be getting better. Hopefully the p.t. will help! 🤞🏻
4:15 I love the way he just says that
Tis fact 😊
This was incredibly helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
I fractured my ankle trying to walk down icy stairs. I screamed so loud when it happened
I’m sorry to hear that. How is it now?
Dr James Gill, great video you deserve more subscribers
Glad you think so!

You are the best doctor ❤
🙏
In EMS , we examine for deformity and we use Circulation , Motor , and sensation to assess ankle fractures .
Since my ankles pronate terribly, I am constantly spraining, straining, or even breaking them. This video is gonna be so helpful!
Hopefully this will help in future

Rather timely, as I am currently trussed up in a boot with crutches after an unfortunate run in with stairs, gravity, and concrete in Ottawa.
When youve broken a bone... its broken.
True facts 😊

If i lived in England i would choose you as my primary care doctor
What if I don’t live in Ottowa?
😂😂😂 just like the rules of gravity. They still apply
Dr Gill, I have an off topic question. What Football club do you support if you support football?

That’s a very good point. It is always why we could use a tuning fork to detect the fracture
@@DrJamesGillBuena idea.
Dr James Gill, cool video it was really entertaining
Any other areas you’d want us to do a video on?

Where in the world is Dr Gill on vacation?
Not vacation - working, doing a bit of expedition medicine
Dr Gill ..the rain drop dodger.
😂😂
If 'A' and 'D' are more then 6 inches apart, a break might not be the more immediate problem.
Well that’s certainly true…
Hello there

what a timing! i am recovering from an ankle injury right now 🫡
Hope it’s healing well?
