How to replace lower control arm bushings on an e36 (Without special tools)

- Tutorial on replacing your lower control arm bushings on an e36 with Powerflex bushings. The process is the same or similar on many BMW's of a similar age e.g. the e30.
Great video.... after watching it I decided to try my luck installing the Powerflex on my Z3. As an old man everything was easy until mounting the bracket back to the car. The hardest part was to align the bracket and bolt holes,,, It kicked my A$$ but I did it.
Thanks for the demo. Fun to watch. Multi-tool is slick, but if you don't have one, a cheap gear puller gets them of the control arms pretty quick too (no ear protection required). Cheers!

Nice M-Tech E36! Mine is the same Avus Bleu Metallic 328 M-Tech but convertible. I just finished replacing my front control arms as the ball joints were completely shot and changing out the RTABS this week with Powerflex bushings as soon as my MIS bushing tool arrives.

When you were removing the alloy sleeve left on the control arm pin, a 2 or 3 jaw puller would have made that work much easier.

Without special tools... this bosh multitool costs half of my month salary.
+Towig93 By special tools I was referring to the specific bushing tools you can buy. The Multi tool is expense, but it is something that has a variety of uses rather than a 'specialized' tool for one job. Thanks for your feedback, will consider your concerns in future videos :)
Towig93 yea but u could just a drill to drill out the rubber piece and a regular hacksaw. And a dremel or $20 harbor freight sawzall if youre struggling
You can also use a cheap jigsaw for that, cut once or twice from the holes of the brushing (drill some if they are full rubber) all the way to the pin of the control arm and then twist the brushing off together with the bracket ;)
I got my multitool from lidl for 25,00EUR
Harbor freight has the same tool for $25. Part of being a man is finding ways to do things with what you have. I know it’s shocking

I used a 3 jaw puller and a tool from Bimmerworld (part # FCABPLATE) and the FCAB came off easily. I took them to a shop to have the old bushings pressed out, then installed the new Powerflex bushings.
Quick Tip: Press the bushings into the lollipop bracket BEFORE you lube them, so you don't get bushing lube all over your hands trying to press the bushings into the lollipops.

I had powerflex anti roll bar ( or sweigh bar) bushes fitted to my Alfa Romeo 147. It tightened up the handling alot it was incredible, but it sacrificed the ride comfort because it let all a load of noise and vibration into the car. I couldn't stand it in the end and given that it was souch an expensive job in terms of labour costs, I reluctantly decided to sell the car. Its worth remembering that sometimes when a rubber bush gets old and begins to fail, it goes hard - and what do you think powerflex bushes are? Hard. You get my point.

I bought some lollipop bushes from a smaller company and it came with no inner sleeve literally just purely the poly bush that goes straight onto the end of the arm but it’s super stiff so is that normal or should I be concerned?
I feel like a wire brush on a drill would be better for getting the edges of the old bushing out

+AndreH5656 Thanks heaps Andre! Na to be honest I was concerned about this issue when i bought them too! But I haven't noticed the ride comfort suffer from them at all. The only thing I have noticed is the steering feels a bit tighter and better round sharp conners. Would highly recommend them! Hope that helps :)

Have you seen these bushings with the offset hole for the pin? They are a bit more expensive? What does the offset do? I would guess it changes the steering to a bit more aggressive/stiff. Thanks.

Na unfortunately not, they have a metal housing so they need to be pushed out with a special tool, burnt out or cut out

Just wanna ask for your feedback about the handling after replaced it mate. I followed this tutorial and successfully replaced mine with Ruff bushes. After that, I have a strange feeling when driving straight at high kmh (like 130-140kmh). The steering wheel seems really sensitive. Is it something normal because the bushes are stiff so that's why I feel the road feedback like that? Or did I mess with the camber angles and toe angles already haha?

Bolts on the bushing housing? 44 ft-lbs (60 Nm) If you would like to use a torque wrench :)
he means your wheel nuts. don't worry about it.
lol he also didnt star pattern tighten them either.
But it said no special tools needed.
