    I have been informed there is a way to disable the trigger haptics on a game by game basis in the Steam Input Settings, that's good but where is it not under the menu literally called Haptic Settings.
    Edit: You can turn it off on the desktop by modifying the Desktop Layout, I have yet to find a way to disable it in the Gaming mode
    Edit 2: For anyone curious you go Settings > Controller > Desktop Layout Edit > Edit Layout > Triggers > L2/R2 Soft Pull Cog > Settings > Set Haptics Intensity to Off
    For any games that have it enabled by default just replace the first 3 steps with Steam Button > Controller Settings.
    Maybe I'm insane but feels like something that should be a bit easier to find.

      @Thornskade 9 місяців тому +5

      It's because you're approaching the logic from a different angle than the device was designed
      You have full control over the haptics of each individual button in the input settings, so this is where you find it. The whole device is centered around Steam input. They didn't figure someone would want a setting for disabling haptics just for the triggers
      If you want this to be default behavior, you can edit the config and save it as a new template. You can then apply this template to every new game you play

    Honestly, this is legitimately some of the most insightful steam deck coverage I have come across, because you actually explain and elaborate on your criticisms in detail other than "it's bad" or "it could be improved".
    For instance, I loved your feedback regarding the ability to disable the trigger haptics and trackpad haptics separately, and the rougher plastic in the grip-area.
    While I personally don't have an issue with the trigger haptics, not being able to disable them separately seems like a no-brainer in hindsight.
    I'd absolutely LOVE to see more videos going over little nit-picks and issues you have just to see a different perspective on things I've just gotten used to.
    And lastly, my two final recommendations are installing CryoUtilities and trying out playing a lot of your slower games set to 40fps/hz - I honestly didn't expect the experience to be as good as it is until I tried it.

    00:15 🎮 The Steam Deck OLED review is based on a week-long experience, incorporating general thoughts on the original Steam Deck.
    01:22 🔲 The Steam Deck's controller feels competent but not perfect, resembling the Xbox One controller with slight differences.
    02:46 🕹 The in-line sticks on the Steam Deck might take some getting used to, contrasting with the offset sticks on other controllers.
    03:14 🎮 The triggers and bumpers on the Steam Deck have slight issues with wobbliness and lighter feel compared to Xbox and PlayStation controllers.
    04:32 🔄 The trackpads on the Steam Deck feel incredible, but the haptic feedback feels disconnected due to the source of the feedback being from a distance.
    06:19 🕹 The material of the sticks on the Steam Deck could be less slippery to improve grip, unlike the slightly rougher material on Xbox and PS5 controllers.
    07:15 🔍 The absence of a rougher material on the Steam Deck's backside for better grip might require third-party skins, highlighting a potential improvement for future versions.
    08:10 📖 The Steam Deck's built-in Zoom feature helps alleviate small text issues in games, improving readability.
    09:32 🎮 The Steam Deck handles lighter games exceptionally well, while heavier titles like Armored Core 6 are playable but not the ideal experience.
    10:10 💻 Desktop mode on the Steam Deck resembles Plasma 5.27 with a mobile-style interface, primarily useful for basic tasksrather than extensive typing.
    11:19 🌈 The OLED screen on the Steam Deck is lauded as exceptional, with HDR having minimal impact on performance and battery life.
    12:42 🖥 The OLED screen stands out as the device's best feature, potentially prompting consideration for an OLED desktop monitor due to its visual quality.
    13:10 ⚙ The option to limit the screen's frame rate on the Steam Deck from 10 to 90 FPS allows for customizable performance settings.
    14:03 🎮 HDR on the Steam Deck might not significantly enhance gaming experiences, varying in impact based on individual preferences and game optimization.
    15:26 🔵 Color oversaturation issues arise during Steam Remote Play on the Steam Deck, affecting gaming mode but not in desktop mode.
    16:18 🔋 The SteamDeck offers around 5-6 hours of battery life on lighter settings, with no need for maximum brightness except in very bright environments.
    17:12 🔌 Using a PD charger and USB-C cable is recommended for faster charging on the Steam Deck, avoiding prolonged charging times.
    17:39 📶 Wi-Fi 6E on the Steam Deck might not significantly speed up local game transfers, potentially being slower than downloading games conventionally.
    18:35 🧩 Installing "Dey Loader" enables various plug-ins, enhancing functionality like boot animations, audio changes, and interface customization.
    20:53 🤔 The Steam Deck OLED's improvements make it a compelling choice for those already considering buying one, but it doesn't significantly enhance performance over the original.

    iirc for the flicker you need to match a multiple of the framerate of the screen. You essentially need each frame and exposure / shutter to conincide with 1 vertical refresh so you don't end up with a draw being spliced across 2 frames. It's the same kind of thing as the rolling shutter effect. With some room lights you can get banding from the AC power

    Don't blame you for being new to steam input, but you can disable individual haptics in the global/menu based profile in the controller settings. Then go into the settings for the triggers and disable haptics.
    The steam deck is an evolved version of the steam controller and they have the best input software as you can fine tune everything to your liking. For example I use the haptics for gyro controls to let me know when I tilt the controller all the way in a car game.

    3:50 That's a preference thing I suppose.
    I personally greatly prefer the Deck's light triggers.
    But I also use them in weird ways, e.g. this very comment was written with my Deck's onscreen keyboard, using trigger clicks so I can type faster with it.
    Which would be fine for (even lengthier) normal texts, if the darn thing wasn't as buggy as it is.
    With my LCD Deck, I'm completely fine with the emulated rumble from the trackpads, after reverting the default change of increasing their intensity.
    I don't quite recognise the trigger haptic issue, but I do know that this setting can be changed in game specific layouts I think.
    Outside of specific game layouts, I use the actual D-Pad over the buttons.
    The pads still work surprisingly well for all kinds of weird things.
    Perhaps the over-saturation when streaming has to do with the colour profiles?
    Uncertain on that, last time I used it on my LCD Deck it was fine, but game streaming often gets broken in updates.
    Along with the onscreen keyboard and closing non-steam programs in game mode, though the latter seems fixed at last.

  • @ceilidhDwy
    @ceilidhDwy 9 місяців тому +13

    The colors being wrong from streaming looks a lot like an HDR issue. I had the same issue when taking screenshots of HDR games. Basically it captured HDR content as SDR, so it looked oversaturated.
    As far as I know, desktop mode does not have any hdr support yet, so it might be why it works fine there.
    Disabling HDR in game settings / deck settings might fix the issue
    But I honestly don't know, it just looks very very similar to what you have in the video

    • @orbatos
      @orbatos 9 місяців тому +4

      Given when the problem started (I experience it on my non-oled Deck as well) I believe it's a side effect of HDR support being added and the colourspace transform not being properly mapped from sRGB to whatever Valve is using.
      If true this can only be fixed by Valve adding some kind of flag on the encoding end that a Steam client can use to apply the appropriate transform.
      e.g. it's a rather silly oversight

    My most comfortable controller is also the PS5 controller, but the Steam deck is the most comfortable handhand I've ever used, even if not perfect (which mostly I think is down to the weight). I definitely found a marked improvement after applying the JSAUX PC0103 Valve Steam Deck Silicone Soft Cover Protector.
    The bumper buttons, I honestly never noticed how loose they are on the Deck but now you've mentioned it, its very obvious, though its never caused me any problems as I've been playing Pinball FX on mine and not had any false triggers. Though my OLED hasn't arrived yet so no idea if its the same, but I suspect it is as they just made the button higher quality, not changing the plastics.
    As for the refresh rate vs frame rate cap, its actually not just that reducing the refresh rate might be a problem, by having it at a higher refresh rate and duplicating frames it actually reduces the latency between the frame being ready and it being output to the screen.
    There's definitely something off with your local transfer, I've tested it on the LCD model and its the same speed as over my Gigabit broadband. When using it between two desktop PCs, its often faster as all my Windows boxes are connected at 2.5Gbit. Although its possible if a game downloads large files then extracts them to lots of small files, it would be slower over LAN as its then having to copy those small files not the big archive.

      It depends on what you play. Unless you play Starfield or something like Cyberpunk at higher settings, I think it's fine. And I think because Valve isn't changing the performance target, it keeps the target on game developers to not make 💩 games.

    • @insu_na
      @insu_na 9 місяців тому +6

      That is one of the reasons why Valve announced that they would not release a new Steam Deck with more powerful hardware anytime soon, basically to force game developers who want to make use of the Deck audience to target this "lower end" hardware. I doubt every game maker cares about this, but I'm sure there are several, and those that do will make new games that run decently on the deck even for a while.
      It's the same as with xbox and playstation, they only refresh the consoles so rarely because that allows the game devs to target a known platform.
      I would say the Steam Deck as it is has another 2-3 years of longevity, then it might be time for a new generation

    • @georgesomething
      @georgesomething 9 місяців тому

      This is not a device you should be getting if you want to play the latest and most demanding releases, it's not that kind of hardware. It's basically a more powerful and portable last gen console. What this means is that whatever game you can play on last gen consoles and even the occasional newer releases you can run on this little portable device anywhere, and that is the reason why one would want to get it. Rather than a device for the latest releases, it's one for past releases to play on the go. And while it is somewhat limiting long term, considering the huge amount of games that are compatible with it, it's not bad either.
      The real question to ask is not if it will run latest releases, but whether there is a set of releases that it can run and you want them portable.

    • @GSBarlev
      @GSBarlev 9 місяців тому +4

      My advice: go look up some old Steam Hardware Surveys and look at what the most popular build was of 2018. Now look at how many AAA games have *baseline* system requirements greater than that. On the GPU side, it's a few AAA games from 2023 and practically nothing from earlier. On the CPU side, you could honestly still be fine with a chip from 2013.
      That is all to say: it is _highly unlikely_ that the Steam Deck won't be able to keep up over the next five years of game development, and given AMD's track record-especially on Linux-we can realistically expect the *existing* hardware to perform *better* in 2028 than it does today.

    • @cameronbosch1213
      @cameronbosch1213 9 місяців тому +2

      @@georgesomething The Steam Deck can literally run Control, Cyberpunk 2077, and Hogwarts Legacy acceptably and unlike consoles, the Steam Deck is much more open, especially given the AMD Mesa drivers being used, which have a tendency to get better over time like GSBarlev said. Just look at all of the crap Microsoft is doing with the controller whitelisting, Sony is doing with a DRM disc drive, and Nintendo doing all of their anti-consumer stuff. The Steam Deck is literally a PC with PC hardware, down to the ability to install pretty much any Linux-based OS or even Windows 11 (not sure why you'd want to, but you could). As such, it is much more open than any recent console since Sony settled the PS3 Linux block from getting class action sued.
      Not to mention two of the three games I mentioned aren't on Nintendo's hardware becuase the Switch would have a stroke trying to run those and other modern AAA games at above very low graphics settings at 30 fps. The third game I mentioned (Hogwarts Legacy) required so many sacrifices to run on the Switch's SoC that was already dated in 2017 when the Switch was released and it still feels like it shouldn't be on the system because the Switch runs modern games worse than a low-end Maxwell era Nvidia laptop GPU, and that's REALLY saying something (given how much the jump up from Maxwell 9 series to Pascal 10 series on laptops was). And many Nintendo fanboys just act worse than Apple fanboys; they don't blame Nintendo for still not releasing a new Switch hardware bump when the console clearly needs it, they blame the developers, who in many cases (like with Hogwarts Legacy) either try their best to make it work but require so many sacrifices, or (like with Marvel Midnight Suns) the game port is simply canceled.
      If I was a video game developer, for that reason (and the additional reason that Nintendo is an evil and sadistic company even to their fans), I wouldn't port ANY game I made to any Nintendo console.
      And don't think Microsoft and Sony are much better. They aren't.

My pc has a fast SSD where all games are stored, I have line of sight with the router (6e) and no other bottlenecks. Transfering files in desktop mode using samba I hit 96 MB/s (saturating the 1Gb Ethernet link)

    There are no technical issues with dropping the refresh rate lower than 45. The main issue is stuttering at the long frames. For example with 40fps lock and 40 Hz screen one dropped frame will produce 50ms stutter even if frame generation took 26ms instead of expected 25ms. With 40fps and 80Hz we will have 37.5ms instead of 50ms into the same case.

    Yeah and Also Brodie you didn't own an Steam Deck LCD so there was really no reason to keep the screen on your Deck OLED on because you had nothing to compare it to. Also I can understand why that some fans of the Deck wanted you to keep the OLED screen on is because those users are owners of the LCD Deck so they can tell the difference in terms of how the colors really pop on the OLED Deck even with UA-cam's crummy compression and whatever monitors they own.

    1) Yes OG LCD Joysticks feel like they had a better "grip". these new ones on the OLED are alot more concave and will take some time to get used to
    2) Gripwise not a big deal. So many third party cases have been in the market for the past 2 year and they're all compatible with the steam OLED. In my case using the KillSwitch by Dbrand and that whole "grip" issue becomes irrelevant + you get a switch like kickstand.

    Could you do a video like this on the ROG Ally?
    I'm still tossing up between the two. I was leaning towards the Steam Deck because I'd heard it had better controls, but you're saying slippage might be a factor.
    Steam Deck is currently $1299 in Australia, ROG Ally on sale currently for $1099...
    Anyone have any suggestions? I'll mostly be playing on my bed, not taking it out anywhere, so while battery life is nice it's not a deal breaker.
    Thanks.

    What's the best Linux OS for learning? Arch? Endeavour?
    I more ask for future reference, wanting to give a linux device as a gift and wanting it to be more like older computers where you learned more about how they worked by just using them because the UI wasn't optimized to shit and you'd mess with the computer more.
    I imagine I'd put the OS on a modular device like a framework laptop.

    17:55 i would disagree that game transfer can only be useful on a slow connection. i have 500 megabit internet, and its still faster to game transfer whenever i can from a sibling's pc, since it can max out the gigabit LAN interface on both of our tower PCs

  • @JessicaFEREM
    @JessicaFEREM 9 місяців тому

    I can only assume it's slower because it's having to check the game on both ends and it's decompressed.
    I'd only recommend using local transfer if your connection is slow and/or bandwidth limited.
    there's also the case of if you're at a LAN party and you have a pile of people on the internet and it's congested as all heck. idk if it speeds up if there's more than one person. maybe valve could implement a torrenting system that leeches and seeds the games from all steam users around the world. I'd love to see that.

    Your problem with HDR is likely due to not fiddling around with the configuration. Obviously you're not gonna like it on some situations and that's fine, but on PC, HDR is weird, it's not like in consoles, it requires you to configure it a bit to get best results

    I agree on most points as an original Deck users, the question being whether an upgrade is worth it.... And that's a hard question. The larger OLED screen and lower pitched fan are definitely worth having, but probably not worth flipping an old model to get. I've been trying to figure out what excuse I can come up with to gift mine for this purpose.
    The colourspace transform issue is likely a trivial issue related to HDR support causing SRGB colours to be incorrectly mapped in the higher dynamic range space, irritating but solvable.
    So this is a "real" review. Next you need to get VR working on the deck.

      My excuse was I have a baby sister who is reaching the age to enjoy simple games, so now I can help her have a taste for fun and creative indie games instead of being trapped by mobile games forever. If there's a kid in your family somewhere that's always a good excuse.

    The problem with HDR on PC (and by extension the Deck) is that of the small number of games that support it many have really bad HDR implementations that can make the game look straight up worse than the SDR version. To be clear even many current _console_ games - meaning, software developed from scratch for platforms that supported HDR from release - are _also_ plagued by crap HDR implementations, but the situation is just even worse on PC. And this sucks. Imagine only having 5% of games support surround sound, but if you turn it on it actually ruins the audio for _half_ of those games. It's ridiculous.

    I kinda wish I had the oled version. I was noticing the back light when I was playing a game on the lcd version. If I wasn't over spent I'd probably get the update and gift my old one to someone. Glad to hear your thoughts. if you get a dock you could use your PS5 or Xbox controller with the deck. I hope Australia gets access to them soon. The not completeling transfers while going to sleep has been an issue since like day one. Espcially with how long it took to download some games. Atleast when I have mine docked it's going over ethernet instead of wifi.

    Love the Steam Deck! I preordered one as soon as the preorders went live and have been in love with the thing ever since. It is the perfect handheld for PC gamers. I ended up buying a second one due to breaking my original trying to mod it, and now I've just purchased the Limited Edition OLED model. The OLED screen is amazing. My only experience with HDR is on Cyberpunk 2077 but I noticed a marked improvement in dynamic range by turning the HDR mode on. Would I recommend the Steam Deck? 100% ABSOLUTELY! The LCD model is still a great option if you're looking for a Deck on a budget, but the OLED screen is incredible if you can afford the extra cost. If you're not concerned with buying the limited edition or getting the etched glass display, I'd recommend buying the cheapest one you can and then upgrading the SSD yourself. My original Deck was the 512GB model with etched glass LCD and my replacement was the 64GB model with glossy LCD. The etched is my preference but both look great, and upgrading the 64GB to 512GB only cost $50 and less than 30 minutes of my time.
    That said, I'm happy to buy the expensive model because I want to support what Valve is doing for the Linux ecosystem. The Deck is a superb console-like experience but with the full openness of a Linux PC underneath and it's all thanks to the work Valve and the open source communities have been putting into SteamOS and Linux.

    Hard agree on HDR, anything below 1000 nits with hdr on looks plain bad
    It isnt helped by the fact that most game imlementations of it are just terrible. From very-very dark to washed out to oversaturated. Even phones have better support for it
    A shame really, it can look transformative, but it just doesn't and people learned that it looks bad and no longer demand proper HDR support in games

    Go to desktop layout and in controller setting, turn off haptics on trackpad or trigger.
