    Great video. What amazes me the most is your going to an isolated area and not worrying about your safety. Aren’t you concerned about predatory people like serial killers. I was born and raised in the inner city so am use to being aware of those around me, even if I don’t see them.

    Hi Tracy, good and concise review. I am getting very nice results from my HyEndFed Extra Short model. It’s only 53’ , string between my second-story balcony and a nearby tree. I was really surprised to work many stations on 80m with my 6w FT-818 during the same contest.
    The Sotabeam mic compressor is also a very useful accessory for the Ft-817/818 series.

    Question on Line Isolator. You say it goes at .05 lambda... For 80m that would be 4 meters which is 13 feet buy you state "Just over 6 feet" Looks to me like you are off by 7 feet. The antenna is wonderful but this choke theory isn't computing.

    Excellent review, thanks for sharing. I have a Cameleon Antenna, which includes both a whip and a 10-80 wire. I've used it with good success with both the whip and wire. Like the HyEndFed you reviewed here, the wire works very well as a sloper, an inverted V and an inverted L. I'm looking forward to trying it as a verticle once I have a tall enough mast.

      Thank you for your comment! To this point, I've only used SLA batteries in the field. They're much heavier than some of the newer alternatives, but SLAs are relatively inexpensive and I have several of them. I've thought about going LiPO and solar, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I appreciate the suggestion about a future video and will consider it.

    Another great video Tracy!! That antenna seems like that would be a good one for anyone running portable and wanting to cover all bands without the need for a tuner. I may check into one of those, but at this stage of the game I am more into building my own antennas. As I mentioned in an email to you I have built my own clone of the Wolf River Coil. I have already made some contacts with it in the backyard, but I am looking forward to taking it out on a POTA activation and see how it does. I guess you can call me a cheap ham radio operator. But, the one thing about this hobby is being able to build, we have kind of lost a lot of that since now there is no Heathkit around anymore. Everything is plug and play. That is why I like the QRP-Labs QCX radios, you build it and then you operate it. Now the uBitx is fun, but most of that radio is already pre-assembled but with the QCX you are building a complete CW rig, the only thing that comes already on the circuit board is one SMD component. But that is what the hobby is suppose to be about, building radios, building antennas and seeing how they perform. Thanks for sharing your review of the antenna and I will look into them for sure. 73 and Happy New Year. Juddie WD8WV

    I own three HYENDFEDs and use the multi-band 200w for my home station. Their QRP antennas are outstanding, but my current one goes only to 40 meters. This new one has my interest. How do you find the weight of this new antenna? Any issues for backpacking?

    • @OutdoorsOnTheAir
      @OutdoorsOnTheAir  4 роки тому +1

      Given it's size, the weight is not an issue for me when backpacking. The bigger concern for me is finding a place in the woods to erect a 130 foot wire.

    Another awesome video Tracy, thanks! What is your tent and table setup? Would be interested in knowing a little bit about the camping gear that supports your radio efforts in the field. Is this your "go to" antenna for a camping weekend now? For a typical weekend outing, how long do you give yourself to setup your station and how has the deployment time affected the decisions for what equipment you take and how to configure everything? Rapid deploy vs. equipment weight vs. station performance etc. These are some of the considerations I struggle with when planning an outing. So I end up asking myself, am I camping or am I "radio'ing". The answer then usually dictates what camping gear and what radio gear I bring - but now I am searching for that best-of-both-worlds solution. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @OutdoorsOnTheAir
      @OutdoorsOnTheAir  4 роки тому

      Hi Lambert, you've given me an idea for a future video. These are very good questions and a lot hinges on how much comfort you want to be in while out in the field. I imagine everyone has a different take on this, but I err on the side of comfort. The way I think, what is the point of quick setup and tear down if I am not enjoying the radio operating experience? And nothing will kill the buzz faster than being uncomfortable.
      Then there is the antenna work. There don't seem to be a lot of shortcuts (i.e. small antennas that can be installed in a few minutes) that pay dividends. I hope this helps, but look for a future video breaking this all down.

    • @LambertMatias
      @LambertMatias 4 роки тому

      @@OutdoorsOnTheAir Yes, I'll be looking out for the next video! Many of the videos I watch of folks operating from their campsite understandably leave out the tedious setup and all we are left with is a video of an awesome camp station with wonderful contacts...but we never appreciate what went into it before they hit the "record" button. On the other hand, many camping gear review videos I watch drag me painstakingly through every knot tied and stake-down of their tent when I really want them to fast forward to them using that tent, stove or table and telling me about it how they like it and how it compares to others etc. I love your channel because of your thoroughness, competency and easy manner, which makes it enjoyable to take in your content. And your overall production values are mostly spot-on (sound, lighting, edits). I am very aware that there is a lot going on behind the scenes (post editing and subject-matter writing) and I can tell that you use the "keep it simple" approach and I very much appreciate that. Anyway, love your stuff. Keep it coming and THANK YOU!

    IT's fairly easy to make your very own version (better) of this antenna (more power handling, more options, less cost). Just three weeks ago, N4LQ, Steve Ellington posted a great (hour long) presentation explaining the concepts and tradeoffs of most common multi-band antennas know by amateurs-with great emphasis on the End Fed Half Wave and all the aspects and updates to previous designs: ua-cam.com/video/BpdpkUEW39o/v-deo.html Steve has been working with the current state-of-ham-art development of this antenna for the last few years. He has a dozen or more videos explaining various tweaks and concepts for those of us so amateur as to make our own. I've made 3 transformer and LOVE my multiband, high-efficiency antenna. It covers 6-80 including 75 as I have it installed (with 75m tweak). Six meters was a pleasant surprise that may not show up in most installations. I do not have the 10 compensation coil installed but can work 10 no problems. There have been design tweaks since I made the transformer on that one. IF you extend the wire to 270' for 160, you'll then get 60m as well. but most bands above 40m won't be tunable. The 160 transformer is made just a little differently as well. So this is for the DIY guys, as hams used to mostly be. 73 de W1ADE.
