  • WELP...swimming is for the fishes bro. But there was a triathlon near me in Shaver, CA and I decided I would give the Olympic Distance a shot. I figured I would have more time to make up on the bike, but the SWIM....THE FREAKING SWIM!
I take you through the day before the triathlon, getting ready, eating, the whole deal. I explain how it all when down in my first Olympic distance Triathlon. I hop you enjoy, I know its a long video, but it was an even longer day for me LOL.
If you are in the area, the Shaver Lake Tri is a sweet event!

That wetsuit is worse than no suit. Pattern not cut for shoulder rotation and legs should be thicker mm neoprene than torso to pop your legs out of the water

Those cheap wetsuits are not meant for swimming ;D
Maybe it was a little to tight for you as well since you couldn't breathe :(
In spite of that, you did really well!!

Swimming is for the FISHES! I need to improve my water skills if I ever want to do anything neat. I know this video is long so here is some skip to points :

The wetsuit might have been too small.. make sure Tony has brake pads for carbon rims on the TT bike.. you can do much better

Sinking while swimming is caused from keeping your head up. Your body center is the chest so when you lift head, legs sink. Just image a flashlight coming out of the top of your head and always make sure it is pointed level or down. When you looked up to sight the bouy, you sunk your legs. Torpedoes don't look forward!

Dude, your bike fitness and training will get you through a run. You really need to get more swim time. The wetsuit on the water probably made you freak out, but practice makes perfect. BTW, I've been doing triathlon for 11 years now, and this was the first year that I didn't get nervous in the swim. I also swam through high school, so it happens to all if us. Congrats tho.

Feeling disoriented after getting out of the water is caused from being horizontal in the water and then quickly going upright. That rush of blood to your brain is HECTIC

If you want to avoid it, use more of your legs towards the end of the swim (300m). This will get your blood circulating in your legs. It doesn’t help that you had a short sleeve wetsuit swimming in cold water. But $10 wetsuit ? What a great deal ! As far as breathing goes, usually the problem is you’re desperate trying to get as much air as you can get in your lungs, but in the end you’re saturating them and CO2 builds up in them. Just breathe a little, and exhale in water while you’re swimming. Stay relaxed. I have not yet mastered that either to be honest and am still a poor swimmer, but could still get through it in a 2.3k/1.4mi swim in a half ironman distance.

Came here to say this - get your legs working more in the last few hundred meters, which will attenuate (somewhate) the dizziness you feel.

Good job, man! This sounds so much like my first Olympic Distance Triathlon. I had joined the Liberty University Triathlon Team before LU had a Cycling Team but I was just in it for the bike. My swim was over an hour because I couldn't see well and I always pull hard to the left in open water. I was also disoriented coming out of the water and I misstepped which made one of the volunteers force me to sit down for a minute. I think I got 1:07 for the bike but I know there wasn't hardly any elevation so you beat me on that score.
I definitely want to encourage you to keep it up. I was only on the LU Tri Team for one school year and I went from over an hour for the Olympic Distance Swim to closer to 30 minutes essentially cutting my time in half. I used to think that breathing and swimming was near impossible and I told my coach that I hate swimming because it is pure suffocation and suffocating is the last thing you want to do when exercising but I stuck with it and I found my technique. So if I could do it, then there is certainly hope for you.
I am a bit surprised that you haven't run more than 6 miles before as part of your cycling training. My Cycling Coach is also the Tri Team Coach (and he sometimes gives more love to the triathlon side of his coaching) so I have always been encouraged to crosstrain with running. With your analytical approach to training, I would love to see the effects that running has on cycling performance and what a good balance is. (Especially because I have a bad habit of going for a 10 mile run once a week and wrecking my knees and legs in weird ways and blistering up and then wondering if it has hurt or improved my cycling performance).

Good job dude! Here's some tips for next time:
    1. Get a long sleeve wetsuit, it will keep you so much warmer. It will also help with buoyancy.
    2. Disorientation out the water is normal. To train for this my coach gets us to spin around on the spot several times, then run a couple hundred meters, it helps you get used that feeling.
    3. Get some elastic laces for your run shoes, that way you don't have to to your shoes in T2 which really helps cut down time.
    4. If you find that you are panicky in the water try and find a local open water swim session to go to and get yourself used to open water.

What a great video. I like what you said about getting out of that comfort zone. As far as the swimming goes you need more time in the water and a full length wetsuit. I can’t believe you didn’t get hypothermia. That bike time was awesome with that much climbing.

Been following your channel for 2-3 years.. keep up the good work. I like how your venturing out into tri’s that’s awesome. Couple things with swimming is theirs a technique called “sighting” which will help you stay the right course. You can also keep within safe distance of the swimmer in front of you just following the bubbles from their kicking. Also of course it takes practice is breathing. For me when I reach out with my right arm I roll my upper trunk and head to the left and that’s when I take a breath. Don’t kink your neck by just twisting your head.

Well done, this is a big commitment when you are not confortable with swimming. I was a cyclist then converted to triathlon. I did have the same daisiness when I got out of the water. After regular swim training (even just once a week), I now get out on the water fresh and focus for cycling. (It might have to do with blood flow not getting use to go into arms) Swimming regularly feels very good because it trains a lot of muscles that cycling doesn't. Keep it up :)

Hey man. You said you were sinking a lot on the swim... I think I might have an idea of why. So I used to be a swim coach, and the biggest thing I saw in new swimmers was that they sunk their legs by trying to have their face looking forward all the time. I could see how this would be an issue especially because you only swim in open water using buoys to spot, not a line at the bottom of the pool. You should primarily be looking like 30-45 degrees above straight down. That should straighten your hips and keep you from sinking.

    • @TheVCAdventures
      @TheVCAdventures  6 років тому +33

+Ellis Cunningham I feel stupid saying it, but looking into the water scares me. I don't know why, but I kinda freak out looking into the blue abyss. I need to work on putting my face in the water though, because your right, my head being up torqes my spine down.

    • @ryanbrizzolara5376
      @ryanbrizzolara5376 6 років тому +3

Agree 100%. Head position = Body position for new/inexperienced swimmers. A lot of it comes down to understanding where your head, hips, knees, and heels are in relation to the surface of the water. Parallel is good, anything else needs improvement. Haha.

    • @bbawlermidget5

Dude, I totally get it. I'm a purely pool swimmer for that reason (well, and because I live in Florida, so every body of water is invested with alligators). Maybe put more time into swimming in the pool to get your head position to stick with muscle memory? Love the videos, dude. Keep it up!

The alligator scare is very real here in Florida. I haven't dared to swim in the open waters either. Haha!

Agree on the swimming part, maybe take a look into the Global Triathlon Network, there are also some very good swimming-related channels on youtube that helped me a lot... I'm also a (competitive) roadie and also just did my first sprint triathlon! Regarding the dizzyness from getting out of the water; everyone has it in some sort, your vestibular is just confused or something (don't know how to say it in English..). They do say practice makes it better, so swimming and then running out of the water makes it better. Tip for that; just try to run to the bike then sit on the ground to put your shoes on etc. Maybe some off-season running as a good quick workout to stay in shape while being busy with the baby ;)!

At first glance, VC would seem plain-jane boring same old same old...BOY OH BOY do I love your work. I found myself (NY vegan athlete enthusiast ;)
I found myself here and at 'Worst Retirement' about 4 weeks ago and never left. Your library, family, editing, demeanor, and swag are topnotch.
I ride mountain, road and urban, but I am definitely upping my road game (new bike) and planning a Yosemite bike trip in the near future.
Thanks and see ya, brah!!! at least for a second or two after you coast by me. no matchstick needed, yet!

I related sooo much with your experience (except for the podium part, I'm not podium material). The swimming part is exactly what I'm going through now. I'm a very fit cyclist but I thought I was to drown at some point. Your concluding words express my own values, thank you for sharing.

Hey, congrats dude, that's a fantastic finish for your first tri! You smashed the bike leg!
You certainly won't be the first cyclist to get slammed by the swim. The swim is the weakest leg for most triathletes, myself thoroughly included. I'm a cyclist first, then a runner, then a swimmer a distant last.
However, swimming is the area where I make up the most improvement month to month. I have my first tri of the season this weekend, and I'm hoping to be able to take at least 2 minutes off my best time, exclusively by improving in the swim.
Try training breathing every 3 strokes, rather than every 2. It takes ages to get the hang of, but makes things SO much more efficient.
Kudos for getting in the water at that temp!

My swim experience was the same for Huntington Lake Tri (you should try that one) but it doesn't help that's it's up 7000' elevation. Lol. Sierra Cascade Multisport Productions puts on great events. Glad you did Shaver. I might do that this year.

Amazing! Man if you join a masters swim class for even 2 months over the winter, you'll learn how to keep your legs from dropping, relax your breathing, and in general become more comfortable in the water. Guarantee you put in even a bit of time with a good tri swim coach it will be good enough to get you out of the water mid pack feeling fresh so you can cream everyone on the bike and get closer to that overall podium. Keep it up! Great vid!

Hey VC. I am triathlete myself and i visit your channel to get tips for cycling as it is my weakest out of three. I nearly pissed myself when i saw you putting on this 10 buck wetsuit and i nearly died when you topped it with that hat. Just made me realise how this hype for a new gear and gadgets is complete ridiculous. You did it anyway and it was a good race. For me this wetsuit is like someone showing up with a wooden bike to race in your world. F***ing hilarious 😂. You are legend.

+Bergo8888 LOL, well that makes me feel better then. I blame it all on the wetsuit.

With your bike abilities you can really smash triathlons as bike is the biggest chunk of the race. I am good swimmer and runner but bike leg always pushing me down the queue. When it comes to swimming just relax keep your head in the water for at least two strokes and than catch your breath. Try to breathe out while your head is under water. Anyways well done.

Siiiick. Great video. I have only done 1 triathlon and it was an Ironman and i absolutely got that disoriented/woozy/dizzy feeling after swimming. I think it was the fact that i barely swam in preperation, the rotating in the water, and also when your ears get cold it throws off your vestibular system. Try wax earplugs next time. Also as a roadie what are your thoughts on aero bars vs traditional road bars? I don't have a tri bike and have just used my road bike for triathlon so far. Also you should seek out sponsors for a wetsuit. Im sure there would be lots who would be interested

Good job. I helped a buddy who is a cyclist do a half ironman and his experience was much like yours except that he's a better swimmer and managed to tweak his knee on the run so he didn't podium. Once you spend some time swimming in your wet suit and work on your first transition, you'll do awesome. However, when it comes to triathlons, it seems to depend on who shows up in your age group where you place.
