All sound as they should high quality preamps. Preference for this guitar and music, I would go with either the A Designs P1 for clarity/balance and dimension, but Heritage 73JR for more girth and warmth. API 512C sounded detailed, clear and up front, but for me not a match. BAE l312A ittle subdued, but could be volume matching. Depends on what your going for tho as it could be the one for your track.
For this particular musical material, the BAE 312A got closest to sounding like a finished record right off the bat. Someone commented that the BAE was missing too much in the low mids, but I suspect that's exactly the reason why it sounded so nice. With some of those other preamps, the mix engineer will probably have to cut those lower mids anyway in order to blend in that guitar part. Why not pick a preamp that blends in as-is (provided that one has the means to be picky).
All are great, and wouldn't say either are necessarily better than the other. it's such a tiny difference anyways. I'd choose the HA 73JR just so I can pretend that I have a Neve, but truthfully they were all great. If you think there's a huge difference between these, you're just a gear snob. Sure you'll notice a difference when pushed, but in this shootout they're all pretty much the same.
The BAE 312 was my favorite since it rounded off the sharp edges the most
0:07 A - Desins P1
0:35 BAE 312A
1:03 API 512 C
1:33 Heritage Audio 73 JR
P1 has the prefect balance! Creamy as where the 312 was more Mellow. 512 was the brightest and sharper transients popping out.
Pacifica sounds just killer 👍🏼
BAE sounded closest to the original to my ears
Of these, API 512C is my favorite sound.

Definately prefered the API!

All great, but API 512C is what you want to listen in the mix, it's ready, it even takes me to the song itself.

Very helpful. Thank you!
Dude please do another shootout of the API vs BAE using a dirty tone with reverb! Maybe use a fuzz :)
Great set!
I dug the P1. API next best. The BAE was missing too much in the low mids. Heritage sounded quieter or just plain worse.
512 > P1 > 312 > 73. but sometimes i feel like (no pun intended) P1 > 512. only one i didn't really like was the 73. thanks!
API, plus some compression pls!!
The api sounded like the original to me
This is a silly test …….why not not drive the gear .. ….
API for me
API here.....
Heritage.
API wins
Trust Fund Kids wet dream
