Wow! Exactly what I am aiming to build. I have a small proto - also using lead screws and NEMA motors and built of 2020 t-slot aluminum which provides a far better rigidity and size stability than wood. But looks like you're a long way ahead of me! This looks truly superb! From when I got re-involved in the hobby about 3 years ago it seemed pretty obvious to me that while conventional fiddle yards and traversers provide a good solution to parking "offstage" trains, they are a lot more useful for circular layouts than for end-to-end layouts. I therefore decided that a lifting system could provide a lot more storage AND allow multi levels of a layout without the need to use a lot of space for inclines between levels. Providing a reliable, ultra-precise vertical fiddle yard/lift for complete trains is not at all easy and my feeling was that - in a typical layout room with varying temperatures getting long-term reliability and precision of registration between lift and fixed track elements with a wooden structure was going to be hard - thus my use of 2020 (or probably 2040 later). My design for my finished version has 12 double track lift shelves and two "on" tracks coming from a mainline station layout and at the far end it has a loop track so that trains can be run off the other side of the lift to be turned around before coming back onto a lift shelf and eventually back into the station - as though returning from a long out and back service. The lift will also allow me a higher level circular track around my whole room so that trains can run at speed sometimes!
That is sweet,... Years ago I built an N-scale vertical staging yard for a friends operations layout, but never got around to automating the thing. Instead it was set up with a hand crank assembly and a solenoid for track alignment.
This is a wonderful idea for the ceiling \ floating shelf layout I plan to build. A lift to get from the yard\storage area to the mainlines instead of a huge helix would be awesome and save me space in my office where the main yard will be. I would love if you could send me any specs to use as a guideline.
I'm always amazed at the talent level of people who are good at CAD programs like SketchUp. You have to have an Engineer's Left Brain for the orderly and analytical construction while also having an Artist's Right Brain for the creative and intuitive design.

Can I ask what are you using to control the lift (software) I am currently in the process of building my own elevator but in n scale, I have been very lucky in so much as I have found someone who has written an internet based software program to control it. But eventually I want to integrate it into my iTrain control software
Hi Phil, the stepper motor that drives the elevator has a driver board that accepts commands via RS232 or USB. My layout, including the elevator, is controlled by a LabVIEW program I wrote over the years.

Was the counterweight an add on to reduce the motor load? Can't quite see the pulley system used for that connection. This motor is strong enough to lift the cage, which weighs approx. 15 kg. However as soon the power is off, the cage swirls down due to the low friction of the drive system, driving the motor via the spindle. The counterbalance leaves the cage in place and indeed also reduces motor load as an extra. For an indication of the noise, see my earlier video ua-cam.com/video/J8dEH4ZIPVE/v-deo.html. It was much lower than expected.
Hi John jean, the loops are there for storage, accessed by the lift. 4 trains of 2 meters each on the bottom levels. More shorter trains on the higher levels. The loops are not horizontal BTW, but go downhill. It is like an interupted helix. Thanks. The reason for using M-track is quite vulgar: Cost. There is more than 140 meters of track in this storage yard, and more than half I had already available in M-track. Buying 50 meters M-track was cheaper than 140 meters C- or K-track. Additional benefit is that I can lead the cables out of sight through the track bed.

If according to your definition of a model railroad there must be trees, houses, stations etc., have a look at 01:53. It is a matter of taste anyway, just like the music. You might find benefit, also in your personal life, in expressing your opinions in a more respectful manner.

Nee hoor dat is geen probleem. Gewoon een geleidelijk inloopstuk van een paar cm maken waar de bovenleiding weer begint.

The stepper motor comes with an RS-232 or RS-485 instruction set. I wrote a LabVIEW application to control it.

Wont lie its a masterpiece but what are you supposed to do with all the dust?
I can empty the levels one by one and give it a cleaning when required. It is much easier to clean than the layout itself.
