    Huff was offered an extension after the victory at ND and turned it down. After last season he was offered another extension and he turned it down as he wanted there to be no buy out but also wanted it fully guaranteed. At that point they agreed to finish out the contract and talk again. Huff also agreed to not seek another job (which he had done several times in his 4 years at Marshall). AD spears found out he had set up an interview with s. Miss when their AD reached out to get the ok to interview. At that point Marshall was done with all of his shenanigans and started to search for his replacement. Huff had signed his contract with s. Miss before the sun belt championship game but all agreed to keep it quiet till after. Marshall likewise hired Gibson before the game and kept it quiet until after s. Miss made their announcement.

    Everyone is overthinking this: Marshall was a stepping stone, left for more money, AD knew he wasn’t staying, conflicts arose, coach search was quick and simple for a home applicant.

    He wanted a new challenge and he believes he can elevate the program. Hattiesburg, MS is a great college town and Southern Miss has great football history. Mississippi also is a good hotbed for talent.

    I don't think Huff liked that area from day zero. It was always gonna be a stepping stone. Which is cool, but he took a side step and saddened an entire community that loves that program. It's honestly just business now in cfb. Maybe it's time to find other interests or things to support.

    SouthernMiss fan here- everybody is calling this a "lateral move", but in my mind that's when you change jobs without a significant change in salary. Well, if he's going to make close to $1.4M a year, does that sound like a lateral move? No, it doesn't- that sounds like a damn near doubling of salary that makes him and the wife happy (wife, by the way, supposedly wanted out of Huntington ASAP). So this was a perfect storm- SouthernMiss has been in the wilderness of irrelevancy for 7-8 years and needed a shot in the arm with a proven candidate. Meanwhile, for whatever reason Marshall's AD (who I'll just refer to as "dumbass") for whatever reason wasn't impressed with Huff and made no real attempt to keep him onboard. So Marshall loses their coach who took the school to victory in the Sunbelt Championship, and the coach is supposedly bringing most of his staff and half the team to SouthernMiss. I don't know- I think SouthernMiss came out pretty good here- our AD saw an opportunity and capitalized on it. That's what happens when the school has a smart AD and the other school has a dumbass.

      We offered him 1.5 and we added 700K to the assistants pool. He turned it down because he wholeheartedly believed he would get a P4 job.
      He interviewed with a P4 and didn’t get the job. He said he would come back but wanted no buyout and we didn’t agree.
      I noticed on the contract he signed with the majority of the buyout drops after 2025, 1 season.
      I like Huff I hope he does well with you guys.
      However, I think he’ll lose until he wins and then leave immediately. The best scenario is he wins year 1 and goes somewhere big time that doesn’t need your players.
      Look at his resume it’s20 years full of 1 and 2 year stops. Took the job at Marshall and before he ever coached a game he interviewed for another job.

      @@jambo_jackbellyyep. Gibson gets 1 million plus 500k incentives. Huff gets 950k at USM and less salary pool. Gibson also brings along a significant NIL backing. This was an easy decision for Marshall to pass on further negotiations with Huff

  • @cockyjeremy
    @cockyjeremy 20 днів тому

    He didn't make the decision. Once he and the AD spoke about the buyout portion of the contract, the AD decided not to offer a new deal. He had no choice but to leave Marshall at that point.

    Huff left Marshall because AD Spears wanted Huff out! There is no coincidence that Marshall had a replacement just hours later. Now, look at how many Marshall players that are leaving for the transfer portal. AD Spears had better hope that Gibson can bring a championship to Huntington by year two! If not, maybe Spears should be shown the door.
    And if I'm not mistaken, Marshall did the same thing to Doc Holiday.

      Why do you think he wanted him out? Seemed like he had a great thing going that was built to last.

      @GroupChatSports673 I don't really know. But when an AD refuses to offer a coach a contract extension, and already has a replacement ready to go, it becomes obvious that the AD wants them gone. And considering that Spears had leaked that Tony Gibson was going to be the new football coach before the end of the season, why wouldn't Huff interview somewhere else. Maybe Spears is a racist and doesn't want a black coach🤔
