pop music success does not require technical skills as a singer. it requires great material and the right sound/image. The Supremes toned down the gospel and soul vocals in order to appeal to all young people. not just those into soul music. And it worked like magic.

@@jackanthony976 I love it when personnel changes are described for any singing group despite circumstances as the reason, as long as singing group members can cooperate, communicate, and keep things moving along musically.
1969, Martha's "comeback" after her break from what Motown called "exhaustion". Songs from the Sugar N Spice album, which were songs recorded between '67-68, not intended as singles, per say. But, with Martha recovering, she could not work on new material. This resulted in a sweep decline in the group. Hate it happened. They were great!
She never had a drug addition someone spiked a drink of her's. Her first drug was PRESCRIBED valium. Unless you know things as a matter of fact, be careful of what you say or write. Does she look or sound like she's on drugs? Hell no.
Bret Terry: If her first drug was prescribed 'valium', then there were other drugs, but she never became addicted to them, right? In this video Martha doesn't even look like she ever took a single drug in her life, she looked marvelous! Whatever negative thing they say about her I won't believe it.
Martha Reeves does really look good, but I be damned if Mary J. Blige look like her. Both ladies are beautiful but in their own right. Why is it that Martha Reeves, being the lead singer, never let Lois or Sandra lead or sing any songs, & nothing is said, same w/Patty LaBelle & The Bluebelles or any other female singing group, but when it comes to The Supremes, Diana Ross is chewed up one side & spit out the other side because Florence, Cindy or Mary never was allowed to sing lead. That's double standard & besides, isnt that left up to the owner/record company C.E.O.? It looks like the whole world is against Diana. Ive heard The Three Degrees' Valerie Holiday put down Diana Ross for never having The Supremes sing lead like her group. Blige. My friends said they couldn't see it, now 20 years on I feel vindicated 😂 I thought then, and still think, if these 2 legends got together for a collaboration, they'd tear it up!
Martha has her new "Vandellas" standing way in the back behind her singing. Martha had just fired her hit making Vandellas, Rosalind Ashford and Betty Kelly. When Rosalind and Betty were singing with Martha, they never stood behind Martha and they always had a hit on the top 40. After Martha fired Rosalind and Betty, Martha and the Vandellas never had another top 40 again.
I don't think the groups difficulty getting hits had much to do with who Martha Reeves had as The Vandellas. By 1969 many groups had difficulty ( The Marvelettes, for example, couldn't chart in 1969 and 1970) Even Diana Ross and The Supremes could not be assured every release would zoom up the charts and Miss Ross had Motown's backing. Martha wasn't even informed when the company moved to Los Angeles. Also. Martha had a nervous breakdown. The Vandellas were her employees ( not the record companies) according to Martha so she decided who would stay and who would go. It is understandable that Betty Kelly would leave the group- her hearing was damaged standing near the live loud music. And Motown ( Gordy, Tamla) already started using the Andantes on the records instead of the real groups. ( The majority of The Marvelettes were so upset by that, they refused to be on the cover of their last album in 1970) . I am not saying that Martha did not act like a prima Donna but how much clout she had , I don't know. I would be a prima Donna, too seeing how Diane Ross ( Diana) was put out front of The Supremes. " Takin My Love ( and leaving me)" was a good song. Too bad it wasn't a hit. Another Martha Reeves and The Vandellas release " I Should Be Proud" was boycotted by some radio stations because of it's anti Vietnam war message. It seemed like the group just couldn't get a break in those later years, but I still bought all their records till the end.
@kellygreen5556 Agreed. Things totally changed for all the girl groups at Motown when HDH left. By this time, Gordy was preparing Ross for her solo career and working extensively with the Jackson 5. In my opinion, Motown didn't push the Marvelettes nor Martha and the Vandellas after 1967.
