Not looking to start acrimonious discussion, just don't understand why they're no metal to you. The opening riff is from Metallica, as are various sections. The statute is Metallica's Lady Liberty and the decapitation pays homage to Metallica. Metallica has embraced BM and mentored them.
@@slaytronic Interesting perspective on why BM is pop not metal. The video was . . . not sure what it was. As you noted "Bebīmetaru" ("new metal" in Japanese) was transliterated into English as Babymetal. They are credited with creating and defining a new genre "kawaii metal"; a mixture of J-pop idol and heavy metal (continuing the citation), but also described as alternative metal, death metal, power metal, and speed metal. So if I understand your criteria, BM is pop because they have pop elements (and some poppy songs) in their music and disregard everything else including the metal elements. Using that criteria then Led Zeppelin is really a folk music band, since they draw influences from blues and folk music. After following and enjoying BM for some time, I'm still confused because IF BM is only a a pop group, why have they won so many metal awards? Some of the 30+ awards are 2015 & 2016 MTV Video Best Metal Artist. Babymetal won 'Loudwire' 2016 awards for: 1) Best Metal Album -"Metal Resistance" 2) Best Metal Song - 'Karate' 3) Rock Goddess - Su-Metal, and 4) Best Metal Act - "Babymetal". Their second album "Metal Resistance" hit #1 on the UK Metal Album Chart and top #40 on US Metal Album Charts. One of Babymetal's songs is listed in top 30 most influencial metal songs (#26). In 2020, Babymetal voted into to Top 10 Greatest Metal Bands by Metal Hammer. Why do so many of the biggest metal bands recognize them as metal and share the stage with them (some even collaborate)? After performing "Pain Killer" and "Breaking the Law" with BM, Rob Halford called them "these wonderful heavy metal monster ladies." Halford mentioned a possible collaboration with BM and JP. Please help me understand the reluctance to call BM a metal band?

@@slaytronic Don't think they have kid voices on Metal Galaxy, but they have definitely expanded the metal influences from around the world; Latin, Indian, Viking, et al, whether pop or not. Personally don't care how they're categorized, in fact I think it's really hard because each song is such a mix of genres. I lived in Japan for several years and other parts of Asia for many more, so my ear is more attuned to Asian voices. Japanese women tend to have higher pitched voices than westerners of same age. Vietnamese, Thai, and regions of China are even higher pitched.

However, I'm curious as how you define Metal and why Babymetal isn't? Not looking to start acrimonious discussion, just don't understand why they're no metal to you.
The opening riff is from Metallica, as are various sections. The statute is Metallica's Lady Liberty and the decapitation pays homage to Metallica. Metallica has embraced BM and mentored them.

As you noted "Bebīmetaru" ("new metal" in Japanese) was transliterated into English as Babymetal. They are credited with creating and defining a new genre "kawaii metal"; a mixture of J-pop idol and heavy metal (continuing the citation), but also described as alternative metal, death metal, power metal, and speed metal.
So if I understand your criteria, BM is pop because they have pop elements (and some poppy songs) in their music and disregard everything else including the metal elements. Using that criteria then Led Zeppelin is really a folk music band, since they draw influences from blues and folk music.
After following and enjoying BM for some time, I'm still confused because IF BM is only a a pop group, why have they won so many metal awards?
Some of the 30+ awards are 2015 & 2016 MTV Video Best Metal Artist. Babymetal won 'Loudwire' 2016 awards for: 1) Best Metal Album -"Metal Resistance" 2) Best Metal Song - 'Karate' 3) Rock Goddess - Su-Metal, and 4) Best Metal Act - "Babymetal". Their second album "Metal Resistance" hit #1 on the UK Metal Album Chart and top #40 on US Metal Album Charts. One of Babymetal's songs is listed in top 30 most influencial metal songs (#26). In 2020, Babymetal voted into to Top 10 Greatest Metal Bands by Metal Hammer.
Why do so many of the biggest metal bands recognize them as metal and share the stage with them (some even collaborate)? After performing "Pain Killer" and "Breaking the Law" with BM, Rob Halford called them "these wonderful heavy metal monster ladies." Halford mentioned a possible collaboration with BM and JP.
Please help me understand the reluctance to call BM a metal band?

What I originally asked was how do YOU define metal (forget the rest of sentence). Most of my regular music is considered metal because the definition is so broad.

@@slaytronic Don't think they have kid voices on Metal Galaxy, but they have definitely expanded the metal influences from around the world; Latin, Indian, Viking, et al, whether pop or not. Personally don't care how they're categorized, in fact I think it's really hard because each song is such a mix of genres.
I lived in Japan for several years and other parts of Asia for many more, so my ear is more attuned to Asian voices. Japanese women tend to have higher pitched voices than westerners of same age. Vietnamese, Thai, and regions of China are even higher pitched.
