Build your security skills from home without committing to costly cloud infrastructure using a home lab; all you need is an affordable spare PC and VirtualBox! In this presentation we'll go over the power of virtualization in building a safe, self-contained virtual computing environment to practice security operations in. We'll look at affordable options for hardware, and how you gradually invest in your own home lab to build your cyber skills and simulate interesting scenarios using free software.

David is a cybersecurity instructor based in Seattle. The principal curriculum developer of the first ever Code Fellows cyber ops bootcamp, David holds a masters degree in Cybersecurity & Information Assurance and has completed a number of certifications including Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and CompTIA Security+. When not teaching, David volunteers for Cybersecurity Non-Profit (CSNP) in an effort to provide career resources and create pathways for aspiring cyber professionals of tomorrow.

Good talk, but open source does not always mean more difficult. Windows updates used to break the system, and they are less frequent, so if you were using an XP machine and it broke a driver, you'd usually have to wait for a patch. In Linux if an update breaks a component, instead of waiting for an update, users can try to patch it themselves / submit a commit to the Linux kernel. Don't get me started on mac's.

How can I use one interface of the Kali VM for downloading updates from the internet, and use another interface for the virtual network, completely isolated from my home network?
