The Paris 2024 Olympic Flame left the Greek Port of Piraeus bound for the French city of Marseille on Saturday 27 April. Tony Estanguet, President of the Organising Committee carried the flame, housed in a lantern, aboard the three-masted ship Belem for its Mediterranean voyage to France. In 1896 the first Olympic Games of the modern era took place in Greece. That same year, approximately 2,000 kilometres away at a shipyard in France, the Belem was born.More than a century later, the Games will finally bring them together. The 12-day voyage between Piraeus and Marseille will add another chapter to the remarkable story of the ship, which was honoured as a historic monument 40 years ago. video curtesy IOC produced by ynuk.tv
