    My dad went on the original Pirates of the Caribbean back in the 70's, and thought it was the best. When we went on the ride in 2010, he was very surprised, but not shocked, on how much it had changed, mainly at the end with Captain Jack Sparrow singing to himself in a room full of treasure. He thought it was downright groundbreaking with how realistic the animatronic was and kept saying it felt like Johnny Depp was in the room with him

    The only change that has "offended" me is that during the scene where the village is on fire, the WDW version no longer has the smellitizer that used to blast the smell of burning wood (like the smell they use in the Roman library burning in Spaceship Earth).

    I think the problem most people had with these elements of the ride boil down to the intent. The scenes were created to be comical, being historically accurate was a byproduct. First and foremost it’s supposed to be fun, not (just) accurate. People probably just had issues with such things being made light of.

      I made a comment before I read yours but I'm going to say the same thing to you as I did on the other one and that is these people that are complaining about such idiotic stuff well they need to get a life!! Why can't they leave things alone you know it's a ride at Disney it's helping us get through our daily lives of stress and aggravation. Just sit back and relax and enjoy the damn ride already

    • @MarcillaSmith
      @MarcillaSmith Рік тому +3

      If the original intent was to be comical, it was darky comical. As a small child in the 1970's version, this ride was scary. The original intent, I think, is that the ride was originally conceived as something along the lines of a pirate-themed haunted house - an Adventureland counterpart to Haunted Mansion, if you will.
      Although I'm hesitant to defend Disney - they have a larger army of lawyers to do that for them than most - I think the biggest two elements at play here are 1) those of us who grew up with it, and so think of PotC as a "kids' ride," and 2) the idea of what "children's media" is has changed since the 1960's from something closer to the morbidity of _Grimm's Fairy Tales_ to a more sanitized post-"Barney and Friends" ideal.

      i think people forget that pirates are criminals. they have a tenancy toward violence. Ironically Disney is doing much worse for society by making pirates the heros rather than the villains. traditionally all the pirates featured in disney movies were the bad guys. Now their most popular pirate themed franchise is about making pirates out to be rock stars.

      It’s a family attraction and the parts involving rape were way too much
      I’m down with the update to the auction
      I just wouldn’t have screwed with the scenario, centering it around Jack I mean. They change the scenario too much and too little at the same time: the pirates instead of ransacking the town for treasure, and I guess they still are, but hearing the interrogating pirate demand jacks whereabouts sounds awkward.
      Also the fact that our hero Captain Jack Sparrow is just fucking around while women are being auctioned for god knows what, it’s a problem for both the ride and the franchise

  • @TapCat
    @TapCat 4 роки тому +80

    I'm fine with changing rides, my biggest objection to the Pirates updates is that so many of them make no sense within the story of the ride itself. The mayor of the town used to be interrogated about the location of the town's gold and he refused to tell the pirates so they kept dunking him in the well. Now, they're asking him where Captain Jack is. Why on Earth would this guy accept being tortured rather than tell them what he knows about a pirate that he has no allegiance to? And in the new auction scene, why would pirates bid for the right to own chickens? They need to get back on a ship, not start a farm! Pirates would take gold, jewelry, and things that they could quickly sell off and then just split the money.
    They keep adding weird touches like this as they graft on new "fixes" and I wish they'd put more thought into making the ride a cohesive whole again. No, we don't need a deep story in a dark ride but it would be nice if the story that is there actually has some kind of internal logic that it adheres to.

The other bits with the naked woman hiding in the barrel from the pervy pirate, and the women being auctioned off is understandably controversial topics on the ride. However I'm glad that he pointed out that this isn't the first time changes have been made to the park like with the Settler's Cabin example at 3:59 because that is legitimately awful for a few reasons. But for Pirates, I feel like if a kid actually does start asking uncomfortable questions after the ride, all a parent needs to do is have a discussion, simple as that. I guess some folks really are just terrified of talking with their children.

    The removal of the original ride elements is always a bad move. Worldly moments like these are also something to take into account when making a wholesome family experience. You can't just wash them away. Children should also be shown that the world isn't sunshine and happy smiling rainbows all the time, something Walt himself understood and opted to show in the movies he directed. That's why they were there in the first place. The entire concept of Pirates of the Caribbean as an attraction is actually quite gruesome: pirates raid a port town, ransack the village, harm or kill the population, then burn it to the ground. If Disney wanted to make a wholesome family experience, the entire attraction would need to be retooled or be removed entirely. So changes like these baffle me.

I mean the bride auction scene being taken out was basically due to a few people pointing out "Hey, maybe we should reconsider showing some pretty brazen examples of sexual violence in a ride intended to entertain families" and Disney quietly agreeing, then removing those elements during the next planned maintenance. The anti-SJW crowd would frame it as lines of protesters demanding and threatening Disney with lawsuits unless they change it, because of course any change they don't like is a personal attack on them.

    Frankly, I think the addition of Jack Sparrow was the dumbest change to the ride
    It's a family-friendly ride, so the other alterations can be excused a bit, but I think adding Johnny Depp to it made it lose some of the charm that made it a classic
    It was a pirate ride with no real cohesive story, just a slice of pirate life. Suddenly, with the addition of the movie references, it lost the element of mystery where you could wonder what the plot was for yourself.
    I mean, the ride is still great now, and one of my favorites, but I do miss the fun of piecing together the story on my own.

    Is it really so weird for parents to not want to have to explain to their curious children the implications of sexual violence while just trying to have a nice time at Disney World? I get the desire to reject censorship but honestly this is quite dark for a children's ride. I get why people complained.
    The argument of historical accuracy also seems weird to me. Like, this ride was never historically accurate lol. It would be much more historically accurate if the pirates didn't sing and actually did rape those women, and then murdered them. Would that make this theme park ride better though?

    Nobody on earth cared about the auction scene until it was suggested that it would be removed and then all of a sudden it's everyone's favourite moment from the ride. That scene never got into any of the movies (which was aimed at an older audience where it would be more appropriate), so clearly it was never that iconic. Evidently Disney didn't feel it suited their brand and nobody cared about that part of the ride so they changed it, I really don't think a company as large and powerful as Disney would allow a "SJW" boogeyman influence multi-million dollar refurbishments to their attractions, that's just ridiculous.

      Ah yes keep making subtle small changes to remove offense material and using that as the prime motivation for the updates (and not expanding the ride, or updating to show more modern technology in animatronics, or features, or story development) and eventually the guns will be removed with slingshots and the pirates won’t speak in old timey slurs because it’s racist or something. But what difference does it make, it’s all for amusement, doesn’t matter if the pirate ride isn’t pirates anymore 🙄

That horrible theme should be gotten rid of. If Disney was actually trying to pay honor to reality, most of these rides would either not exist at all, or they would be blood and horror shows of human atrocities. Pirates should be re-thought and the sexually suggestive threads removed entirely.
