Informative video. I appreciate a listed of common issues found on each generation. I bought a 2012 Cayenne S for its sportier look and upgraded interior looks. My own research also revealed about the camshaft bolt issue you indicated. Porsche never issued an recall, instead it had a 'workshop campaign' for owners who are still under warranty. Given the severity of damage, Porsche should have issue a recall, but it didn't. Disappointed.
We had our Cayenne for 6 months now. Wife still loves it. It was a good buy.

You think it’s too much miles or should I go for it ?

This is an excellent summary- short but he covers all the important points and it's easy to understand. The graphic charts do a great job of supporting the commentary. Clear, concise summary. Thank you for your efforts. I bought a 2014 Cayenne GTS with 28,000 miles last year but didn't see this video until now. Thankfully I did pretty much what he said to do including a really thorough PPI which cost $265 which is right in line with what he quoted. 15,000 miles later I have had zero problems with the car. Really a fun car to drive both around town and on long trips. A great car.

amazing review!!! I started with the 05 S and had absolutely all the issues listed above and fixed them myself... it was time consuming but very rewarding experience.... other issues with that first model are the brakes are super delicate and easy to ruin...expensive to fix.... my front differential started to make little noise... but after fixing everything and driving it all the time is a joy.... I have been test driving newer cars that come out looking to get into a newer one but man!!! no comparison to my old porsche... still kicks butt.... Thank you for the review!!!
My ignitions coils have over 150k and are still running strong.... the only thing that went bad was the camshaft position sensor but I just shook it and got fixed....

Very informative and thanks for that! I am looking at the Range Rover Vogue Supercharged, BMW X5, Mercedes Benz GL and Porsche Cayenne. I am leaning more to the Cayenne for its comparable reliability, build quality and style. If within my budget, I would like a few of the bells and whistles, air suspension, heated steering etc. Your presentation was straight to the point. I am now a subscriber.

I never thought I would ever want one of these , but I have come to like the 1st generation especially. The Manual gearbox is what i,m very keen on so I am looking at the V6 model.
I found one ( they don't appear very often) and its getting the 111 points inspection on Monday.
Its got approx 85,000 Miles so I hope its going to be in reasonable shape.

My wife has a used 2014 cayenne base model. Had it for 1 year and she loves it. Great performance and reliability so far. Still learning about all the features and gadgets. The was well maintained and we probably paid more but we have the peace of mind there no major issues yet. We do recommend buying a used Porsche but do your research. I watch your basic maintenance videos and they are very helpful and will save me a lot of money with not too much effort. Keep the videos and advice coming!

Great detailed report there which should be a big help for a lot of prospective buyers. I did note that the V6 Diesel version was not available Stateside until 2011, whereas it was sold here in Europe in 2009 and probably even earlier . A friend has just picked up a 2009 English model. Of course in Europe, diesel engines have been huge mainstream sellers here unlike the States. More than 50% of all cars sold here are diesel, and that includes luxury models like BMW and Mercedes. In the Sates, where I lived for 20 years, the only diesels you normally see are in Commerical transport, espc Buses and Trucks, and maybe a few pick ups.

This was a really helpful video! Thanks so much! I am looking at 2016-2017 models…your comment we cheapest vs well researched model (Service history and Checkup) were spot on….these vehicles were still a very expensive car in their day so knowing what you are getting into is critical.
Would you also shy away from the first year of a new generation or in keeping with Porsche Evolution, is that not as much of a factor compared to other makes?

  • @xkrnxboix

The 958 transfer case issue is more prevalent than people think. But, there is a thread on 6speed that proves that changing out the TC fluid solves the hesitation/whining issues of the TC. Basically if you own a 958, add the TC fluid flush as a preventative maintenance every other oil change.

Very well structured and helpful video for someone who has been admiring the Cayenne for a decade or more and now considers buying one. I am considering the 958, but worry about the user interface and acceleration as I have had two Model S Teslas, the P85+ and the 90D over the last seven years. I have been searching the web for a Cayenne 958 upgrade to Apple CarPlay (which I did three years ago to our Smart Fortwo with great results). With the Smart I just swapped the standard ForTwo head unit with an Alpine Apple CarPlay unit (with rear camera that my wife loved). It seems this does not exist as an option delivered by a trused brand and available for install by a diligent installer?

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  4 роки тому

Thanks for the support! You can get a headunit with CarPlay for the 958. Just go with a trusted brand like Alpine. It will run you about $2000 for a proper headunit and install to maintain all of the stock functionality like steering wheel switches and back up cam. As for power, a 958 is pretty fast. Just don't expect the same initial response as a Tesla. Thanks for watching and hope you're subscribed!

Finally a video to explain the difference between trim levels and model years, thank you. I think I will be getting the 2015-2017 used cayenne, maybe the base or the S trim. Also, I'm not sure about the V8. I do live in Canada on the east coast, so it doesn't get extremely cold but cold enough periodically. Maybe it could cause bore scoring like you mentioned? Either way, thank you for the detailed Video and explanation. I welcome other comments as well with comments who own 2015-2019 cayennes. Or is there a similar vehicle out there that I should consider?

I purchased a used 2012 Cayenne turbo in April of 2018 with a bumper to bumper 4 year Porsche warranty (for 6k) and it paid for itself after my second visit to the dealer. Dealer replaced transfer case at about 68k miles and valve cover head gaskets on two separate visits and those are the only two issues I've had. Still have 13 months of warranty left and this thing is a dream and fast as hell, just ask all those Chargers, Camaro's, Mustangs and Japanese cars with the huge mufflers 🤣

Hey , so I've been looking for a 958.1 Cayenne Diesel. As I've read through some forums - it turns out to be pretty reliable - especially 2013 models. It has great MPG , the interior design and quality is superb and it's a VW-Audi V6 diesel so maintenance shouldn't be that much expensive. However , 245 hp is a bit on the "lesser" side so I am in fact starting to look through Diesel S V8 offers. Are there any particular problems and are maintenance costs going to skyrocket compared to the V6 Diesel. All in all - I'd be happy if you could tell me how does the V8 Diesel compare to the V6 one - MPG , running cost , reliability. Oh and one more thing - thanks for the great video - extremely educational especially if you are in the marked for a used Cayenne!

Bought a 2013 Cayenne Base model about two years ago. It's definitely a great looking car. One major issue I have experienced is the transfer case. It happened at around 41000~ miles. Very noticeable hesitation at 3rd gear. This issue is actually very common for 958.1 which I was told by the dealer. The other issue I had was the evap leak which happened twice and eventually got the valve replced. These are the only two major issues I have had so far..would definitely suggest find a good indy shop for maintnance and repairs..the dealer in PA chargerd me $450 for oil change and ~$1600 for a major maintnance which I think is definietely a ripoff..

Hi Bill. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The Macan seems like a great car. I don't think all of the Cayenne's "space means too much. Cargo space in the Cayenne is better, but not great. I also wouldn't want to put a bunch of toys in the car since they would likely scuff up the interior. I have a Thule hitch-mounted bike/ski rack, which works really well. It works a lot better than the silly roof rails which cause a ton of wind noise and kill MPG. Thanks for watching and hope you're subscribed!

@@CarFanatic haha, funny about the roof rack thing, I'm ditching mine this year for a hitch mount on my bimmer, you can literally feel the drag slowing you down with $hit mounted on the roof...they say it's ~ 30% hit to mpg...

Great and informative review. Thank you. I have a very low mile 2005 Cayenne S. I bought it with only 12k in 2018, and now have around 27k on it. No problems at all, I love the vehicle, but will look into upgrading the coolant pipe, as the vehicle is in a hot weather climate full time.

    • @boyracer3477
      @boyracer3477 Рік тому

You probably won't see this after 3 years but here goes. Did you replace the coolant pipe? I would want to do that proactively. Is the replacement pipe of better quality or will you have the problem again? Any idea what the replacement might cost. Same questions about the shaft bearing. If you replace it proactively as you would with an early Boxster IMS bearing, how much might that cost? Anyway, thanks for your reply with your experience. I'm beginning a search for an early 955 to pair with my early 986S which I dearly love. I'm in no hurry but my elder GMC suv is aging and the diff is complaining. Also, this is probably the worst time in history to purchase a used car.

@@boyracer3477 the coolant pipe kit is less than $1,000. I think labour here would be a day, but I also think I could do it myself. There are 2 really good DIY videos on You-tube for this job. I just passed on a really high offer for mine, I think I will keep it indefinitely.
I have not heard anything about IMS bearing failure in the 955.

@@beemer1111 Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I've just learned of the Cayenne and it seems like the answer to what I need. Like my Boxster, if there are engineering flaws or parts that are expected to cause a serious problem, I would much rather deal with them proactively rather than ending up along the side of a road one night. I was speaking of this thinking when I spoke of the IMS bearing. It is a known problem in early Boxsters, that while rare can cause a similar problem to a timing belt breaking on a high compression engine, ruining the engine. For piece of mind, it is good practice to just put in a more robust bearing. I think I will do the same with the Cayenne cooling pipe and the shaft bearing when I find the one that I'm looking for. Thanks again!! Like the early Boxsters, Cayennes seem like a bargain for what you get.

@@boyracer3477 I think you will be good if you just do the coolant tubes with one of the aluminum pipe kits that are available on EBay.
Other than a couple of coil packs, mine has been trouble free. I upgraded the radio with a perfect fit unit, it was an easy install. I also did the stainless steel Fabspeed 1st Cat by-pass pipes, I love the sound, and they look great. Another easy install. Be sure to only use an
OEM battery if you need to replace it, they last forever, but are a difficult R&R, so avoid any kind of cheap option.

@@beemer1111 Thanks again. I wasn't interested in modern Porsches or looking for one before I saw my Boxster. I'd heard of them but that was it. I saw one for sale at the back of a shop and that night did some research. No one who had driven one had anything bad to say. They were amazing cars at a bargain price. A best kept secret. It's sounding to me like the Cayenne is the same thing. An amazing car at a bargain price.

The naturally aspirated engine is nice, but the turbo really gets things moving. It's definitely fast enough for an SUV, but something I wish the turbo had an extra 100 HP. I could get that with a tune but don't want to sacrifice longevity.

I bought a 2008 Porsche Cayenne Base manual transmission 119,000 miles . I should have researched the car history and did the pre-owner check up. Now that I know a little more about the car’s history, I will definitely use this platform to keep myself up to date. I actually love the SUV. Once I purchased the vehicle, I found the hood and roof needed repainting. Front strut, brakes (pads and rotors), struts, spark plugs, park brake, other suspension parts (bushings and rods) needed replacement. Rear hatch button (on driver side door) didn’t work. Some one backed into the lower rear half bumper, cracked the out cover and did reported the damage via note or car the police. A hit and run person just left.
The cost for all these repairs are not cheap.
There are some good repair shops near me. Not as costly but better that dealer shop cost.
I’m looking to find more useful tips on maintenance and upkeep for my 2008 Base Cayenne manual transmission SUV. If there were any recalls motor part upgrades for the factory plastic parts (especially under the hood) for cooling systems and anywhere else. I love the weight of the SUV. It really ride well.

My Cayenne S (V8) was almost 12 years old when I got it and was on its original coolant pipes - which I subsequently popped lol. Easy replacement and since then its been fantastic and the air suspension is great. Be sure to do the bulkhead drains every 3 months.See my Porsche Tech playlist.
