Saw many great show's at Hop Singh's. Probably at this show, saw Robben (always with Vinnie!) many times there along with Eric Johnson, The Fents, Players w/Scott Henderson, Jeff Berlin, T Lavitz, Steve Smith who recorded a live album there.
Excellent recording.considering everything .....wow HS was only around 3 years?? It was a great place! Eric Johnson came out and demoed his songs that would become TONES there..in 85
I think Robben moved to New York soon after this and he used to play at a place called Mikell's a lot,it was unbelievable, I have never seen him play anywhere else the way he used to play there in that relaxed setting. He had a fantastic tenor player with him named Bob Malach.
This is so so so so good! Thank you. And thanks to the youtube magic that led me here. Man. Roscoe Beck and Vinnie on a shuffle. Life doesn't get much better. Robben Ford just makes me happy.
Yeah...here in LA we were lucky. We had only heard Vinnie from Zappa and Gino and some tracks with Pages, and then he was gigging with my friend Marilyn's band live and then with Robben and then all over town so you could see him in many intimate settings for a few years until he broke super big.
Thanks a lot! Even if I already had this recording; I love the Robben Ford from this era. I have many others recordings too from At My Place and The Ice House but I hope yours will be differents. About this one, title tracks are : 0:00 Unknown 6:10 I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues 16:30 Love In The eighties 25:10 Revelation 37:08 Outlaw Blues 44:00 I Put A Spell On You 52:00 Talk To Your Daughter 1:02:44 I’ve Got News For You
Love in the 80s??? That track is called Call Of The Wild that Russell wrote and played on with Robben for Victor Feldman. Were you there for this show? Do you remember when it was? I can only guess 85 as I wasn't married yet.
@@garygibson5983 Yes, Love in the 80's, that's was the title writed for that tune on a bootleg i got long time ago with Robben's unrealized tracks recorded in studio. Call of the wild is a different track, you can check here : ua-cam.com/video/0KLzVkIXoP8/v-deo.html . I believe the show was close to April 1986 when Robben had just started playing with Miles because Adam Holzman, Miles' keyboards player is in the band.
My God! I just commented on someone's Facebook posting and mentioned this very show. Came here expecting to never find something so obscure. Wow. I was a kid when I saw this show...mesmerized. I think a group called The Hedge Cutters opened?
Wow, thanks for this! I think Hop Singh's was the first nightclub I ever went to for a (non-stadium) show, and it was for Robben Ford. I'm guessing this was probably fall of '85 or early '86. (I was a senior in high school and somehow managed to get in..) Saw him at At My Place a couple times as well with a similar band, probably around '87 or '88 before everyone started moving out of LA.
Hop singh's welcomed minors. Anyplace that sold food could allow minors in, but many that did sell food did not because they didnt want the hassle or take a chance on someone getting served and having their license revoked. The Baked potato, At My Place, Dontes....they all let under-agers in which was wonderful.
Thanks for sharing! Second unknown song is called Outlaw Blues. I think it was recorded for TTYD, but only released as Guitar Player magazine’s soundpage/flexidisc in ’88.
Thanks so much. You can barely hear him call out the tune and I could hear the second word was blues, but I couldn't hear the first. I wish my tapes were in better shape but they're old and have been played a lot.
@@sampokantele I can't imagine Robben is credited as the composer, he changed it a lot but it's technically still a Bob Dylan composition. Robben totally changed the feel and the harmony of "I put a spell on you"and "I ain't got nothing but the Blues " but you have to still give the composer's credit to the original composer no matter how much you mess with the tune. Check out the original version of I put a spell on you by screaming Jay Hawkins, it's completely different than Robben's version, it might as well be a different song.
@@davidsheriff9274 Totally agree! If you search discogs site for robben ford outlaw blues, there is picture of soundpage and actually no credit is given to Bob Dylan. Very strange! It has to be mistake/misunderstanding from Guitar Player magazine.
I will try to fix that. When I first posted the video UA-cam asked if it was for children. I assumed it meant safe for children so I checked the box for yes and that automatically turned off the comments.

Was there…amazing time with EJ, Holdsworth and Robben all playing around town for a deal. Saw them all at Hop Singhs.

Mate this is gold. Anything with Vinnie on it usually is. Robben is burning too.

This is great! Thank you so much, and please do upload the one At My Place as well, I had that one a while ago but lost it...
The second show that night was next level…lent the tape out in the 80’s never saw it again.

@@ChristoMusic Well it sounds very familiar to Call Of The Wild, but I will have to ask Russell next time I see him.

I don't remember an opening act. I was probably hanging with Russell Ferrante. These shows were great and plentiful back then.

Thanks a lot for posting this. I have listened to quite a few of Robben's bootlegs, but not this one I think.
You're welcome. 35 years ago I just made these tapes for my own enjoyment. Now with UA-cam I am able to share them. I hope the artists dont get upset.

Have you ever listened to the original version by Bob Dylan, it's so different you wouldn't even recognize it if it wasn't for the lyrics.
@@davidsheriff9274 Haha, I did not know that but you are right. I’m pretty sure the flexidisc had only RF credited as songwriter.

The fill at 37:42 just cured covid 19
how are we supposed to ask questions about the Photoplayer and Joe if the comments are turned off?

Robben should never have gotten rid of Roscoe
Is that true?
