    I bought a MP this week and I think it is in every aspect superior to M6. If I were to choose between a brand new MP and a mint M6, I would still pick the MP. It is a logical decision for Leica to produce mechanical camera in times of chips shortage. The camera shop owner said an 'affordable' M6.2 will sell like hot cakes as he notices the popularity of shooting film. Let's see what improvements the new camera brings to enhance the shooting experience. I hope Leica will not discontinue the MP as this camera has already attained 'Perfection'. It should remain the flagship of Leica analog camera.
    If I had money to spend, a medium format camera would be my next choice. Personally I would not invest in any digital M cameras, M cameras are for film.

      Yeah it’s a superior camera for sure. I share your feelings about M’s being for film although I have the M9 and love love love it. I’m not interested in any of the other digital M’s though. Cheers man, thank you for watching!

      Don't sleep on a replaced sensor M9. The price bottomed out a few years ago and they produce my very favorite raw files. There's something very special about those Kodak CCD colors that you can't get on any other camera, including more recent digital Leicas.

    I too coveted getting the Leica M6 for years. Saw them originally for $1500.00 but didn’t grab one at the time.
    Bought a early Wetzlar M6 in early 2022 owned it for about 1 hour and sent it back. Reasons why was I felt the build quality compared to my trusty m3 was disappointing. The plastic parts and the alloy used in the top plate didn’t warrant the 3k price tag. Bought a brand new MP a couple months later and realized that it felt just like my m3 and felt like a work of art.
    Just my two cents! Not gonna lie, watching you speak about your MP helped me make the plunge and I’m so glad I did.

      It really is a beautiful work of art. And I couldn’t agree more, the M6 is still a great camera, and it’s built well, but the early M’s and the MP and M-A just hit different. Thanks for watching my friend! Appreciate you 🙏🤙🏼

    Before you read my comment ! This is meant positive. My view is not against this video. I love these videos.
    I have a Leica M6 with two lenses. I love my Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 ASPH the most. Camera and lens from around 1995.
    I fully understand people dig deep into all sorts of pros and cons with different kinds of things they want to buy and are confused.
    I do the same thing with different things. BUT - some things - as the M6 has had a very long life with pro photographers. Yes - some things get better….but how important are they ?
    I just want to make people calm and remember how many years of use these cameras has gone though. How many great photos photographers has taken with Leica cameras. Maybe you need a lightmeter - maybe not. A bigger or smaller viewfinder. Maybe a dial could be bigger - smaller. I prefer a dial that STOPS !!! You know where you are when you do street photography. Sorry - here I had an oppinion.
    I write this with a positive attitude - and hopefully in a good tone. Hope people understand it is meant in a good way.
    If you have the money for an old M6 - buy and old M6. It`s wonderfull - I know. Forget about the new one from 2022. Probably very good and expensive.
    Having a Leica makes you happy. Even with a very old one. That`s in a way what I want to say 😊
    A lot of kind regards
    Jesper - Denmark - with almost 35 years with an old Leica M6 🥰

    Back when I was looking to purchase my first Leica rangefinder, I considered the M2, M6, and MP. Since a classic titanium M6 was the first that I found in good condition and at a reasonable price, I bought it. I now shoot my M6 with 21/35/90mm lenses.
    The only reason I would sell an M6 and/or an MP would be because I was expecting another child, or I needed to pay for the young children I already had. I would not get rid of my dependable film cameras for Leica digital cameras because I had very bad experiences with the two Leica digitals that I owned.

  • @weisserth

    I have to disagree with some of this. Especially the calculations around pricing. It's not fair to say the MP is much more expensive than an M6. Bear with me on this. I think the MP is the much better deal and the M6 is overpriced.
    I bought a factory new Leica MP in early 2020, just as the pandemic hit. I have been on a Leica wait list for a new MP (either silver or black, whatever arrived earlier) and someone bailed on their turn, I was next in line. I jumped at the opportunity, grabbed my credit card and picked up that brand new silver Leica MP immediately.
    On pricing:
    A mint condition MP on the used marked in 2020 was more expensive than a factory new MP from the Leica Store. The new MP comes with a THREE YEAR WARRANTY, no questions asked. I sent in my MP twice on warranty, I also had the sandpaper cover replaced with the nicer leatherette. I paid nada, zero, nilch for the repairs and modification, including shipping. It was all on warranty. The three year warranty on a new MP is value you have to put into your calculation when comparing the price of a new MP against the price of a (used) Leica M6. The new MP is the option with more bang for your bucks, making the M6 more expensive.
    On differences, the MP is noticeably a better camera. The viewfinder is MUCH better on the MP compared to the M6. The inner mechanics of the MP use higher grade materials than most M6 models. But most importantly, the main difference in my opinion is the body. Take a look at the top plate of your M6. On both sides of the top plate, you will find these plastic covers embedded in the top plate, just above where the strap lugs are. They pose a risk for light leaks if the plastic breaks or degrades. A proper Leica M does not have this inferior design and the top plate is solid metal 100% on all sides everywhere, like with the M3, M2 or MP.
    FYI, the meter dial uses two different systems for film speed. ISO/ASA and the original DIN from Germany. DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung, a standardization body in Germany. DIN film speed according to DIN standard 4512 is measured in degrees, not temperature degrees. DIN 27 is ISO 400 for example. So no, it's not film development temperature...
    By all means, if you're in the market for an analog Leica M, and if you can find a new MP from Leica with warranty, buy it. It provides you with the best value for your money.

    • @FrankDavalos
      @FrankDavalos  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah all good points man! I even said a lot of what you said in the video, and made the DIN correction after the fact LOL. But the M6 is undoubtedly cheaper no matter how you slice it, with the caveat of things like a worse viewfinder, etc. But a new MP retails and around what now? Like $5700? (Haven’t looked in forever) - and you can find M6’s for like $3K, heck I bought mine for $2K. Nowhere did I say your $5700 can’t be justified, in fact, I made a whole video trying to do just that hahaha. But all good points my friend! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Appreciate you

    Thanks for this great video! I am currently considering whether to get the new Leica M6 or the Leica MP. Both cost exactly the same. I have read that the new m6 has an improved rangefinder over the old m6. My question now is: is the new m6 rangefinder superior to the mp’s rangefinder. And what about the mechanics. Does it have the same mechanics as the old m6 or is it similar to the mp mechanics. Do you know anything about these topics? Thank you very much in advance!

    • @FrankDavalos
      @FrankDavalos  2 роки тому

      Hey Pauk, everything is the same! I think it has the MP viewfinder which is definitely better than the original M6… it’s also now made of Brass vs the zinc alloy of the old version, which is a big plus. I think it has an improved light meter style similar to the MP, which has the center dot when you achieve the exposure. But otherwise it’s virtually the same camera. Me personally, I would choose MP every day of the week. And that’s coming from the guy who sold his M6 and his MP, then sold his M-A… now I just have an old M6! So you know my advice is impartial hahaha

Also no plastic parts on the leaver and I prefer the film rewind. It’s far more durable. Also I got told that the mechanics from the mp are better than the one from the m6. As far as I know, Leica made their last film camera as “old fashioned” as possible, i.e. mechanical. The batteries are only for the lightmeter. Within this concept, a TTL controlling the flash would not be logical.

    I upgraded my M6TTL for an MP. The light meter seems more accurate and the shutter click smoother. Viewfinder brighter.I upgraded because here in NZ there are no parts for repairers so it would need to be sent away for months. The M6 light meter can't be repaired (if it goes faulty) and I had issues with the rewind where the film locked up after about 20 shots. I managed to get it fixed but got spooked. I didn't want it to let me down on holidays. The shutter curtain had some oxidation on it which was not affecting the operation but just not apparent when I purchased on eBay where the sellers cunningly don't disclose the true condition in the photos. The MP is not TTL but flash still works but only at 3 apertures .That's a small thing and not a big deal. The M6 has lasted 20 years but will it last 40? It's the cost of repairs and the loss of time. Having a warranty was a big plus.
