      When a man shares his experience with other people for free he is always deserves respect.
      But remember your decisions is always yours, and if you loose money it's only your fault.

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  9 місяців тому +1

      I agree with what you said, however I would add something to this. Assuming you mean “if you lose money it’s your fault” is about picking individual stocks…the reality is that people can lose money with index funds as well. The difference is that they don’t view it that way. If the index loses money it’s “not your fault it’s the market” however the person chose to be a passive investor and take whatever the market gives them. They are basically betting that history will continue and give them a better outcome than they could do actively managing.
      These are all choices the difference is that investing passively masks itself as “faultless”

    I like to think of stock picking and my portfolio in general as quasi “ETF” that has been curated and personalized to fit my goals and tastes. Many ETFs including QQQ and SCHD only have around 100 holdings. As a stock picker, I can evaluate and invest in any or all of the components of a given ETF and add or remove or weight them however I wish, all while avoiding any fees. Some companies that are held in ETFs or index funds are companies that I have reservations about owning, some don’t align with own personal beliefs, some I have had horrible experiences with as a customer, some just stand out as poorly run with little chance for future success. I’d rather find 20-30 companies that I love and know and feel strongly about then having exposure to companies I want nothing to do with. That approach isn’t for everyone, but for me it works great.

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  9 місяців тому +1

      Definitely, and it's a great way to look at it. ETFs are just following an index or a methodology. We're creating our own methodology and criteria and picking stocks that fit. Sounds pretty similar to me

    Nothing wrong with stock picking as long as you’re honest about the underperformance vs indexing and what’s it’s costing you over time. Same could be said for certain flavors of index investing, in fact: dividends only, high income, value investing, etc.
    The vast majority of retail investors, including the UA-cam finance bros, hide their losses and cheerlead their wins. More focused on getting clicks than sharing an honest account of their investing journeys with a spotlight on both their failures and successes. Love your channel Matt. I’ve been investing since late 90’s. Had mostly about 20 stocks at that time and lost a bunch during the tech bubble. I stayed with individual stocks for a long time, but several years back I looked at my long term gains. Over 10+ years I just couldn’t beat the market so I slowly sold my stocks and bought etfs. For me I got tired of seeing loses in certain positions and managing all the individual stocks. So I went the route of simplifying my portfolio. I still follow the market everyday but don’t stress anymore over individual stocks.

      💯 lopesphoto. You have to have balls of steel to psychologically handle individual stocks even on mega caps. Most ppl don’t. If you can handle the waves many companies are tremendous compounders but you need 20-30 years to realize extraordinary gains. MSFT was dead money for a decade but if you had conviction and DCA on MSFT it’s turned into a fortune over the decades.

    • @lopesphoto
      @lopesphoto 9 місяців тому

      @@lasercooper I do remember when Microsoft was trading in a range for a very long time and didn't go anywhere with Steve Ballmer. That's just it, just because you hold a stock and it performs well for years, doesn't mean it will forever and can stagnant. So you have to continously research and stay on top of your individual positions. For me I just couldn't do it anymore and I saw over long periods of time I couldn't beat the S&P, I was a couple of percentage points behind.

I prefer to know when I buy an individual stock, it is a deal. With the market so high I invest in ETF's like SCHD. I have 50,000 on the sideline right now collecting 5%. When the market drops ... IMO you should build your foundation with ETFs first. Focus on building your income and don’t worry about picking investments. If you absolutely have to pick stocks because you care about it that much…pick 1 or 2 you are interested in and start the process of researching and monitoring their progress every quarter but with a small percentage of your total. Income and index funds will take you far. You should only complicate it if you really really want to pick stocks and only after you’ve built a foundation. Just my thoughts and experience with it

    I think as far as I can tell you sir and I have a similar experience and relatively similar strategy. Yes the more you learn the more you realize “ I could at my age just do a good index fund and pull the same or possibly better return. “ we all know that and we all have money there. I think if you don’t TRY to beat the market you are left feeling that you could have done better. I think at the end of the year if my dividend portfolio has done slightly under, same or slightly over the general market I have at the end I get a feeling that “ I did that!” I picked those. I formed a strategy and I myself had an active role in the fruits of my labor. We enjoy reading about companies and research and it’s fun to see what it taught us, people like to be very judgmental for some reason. I don’t want to see anyone loose money, even the apes and the meme stock folks ( though I think their strategy is misguided and horribly flawed). I wish we could be less aggressive towards each other. Good for Matt! I saw my happy family today in my nice neighborhood and they are happy. I am too. And I did that. I enjoy continuing to do it. I find it difficult because when the stock is down, i just dont know if the bad news is real or temporary. Some times the bad news can be really concerning and legit. What happen if a stock is down 5 years? If i keep adding more, and it doesnt recover, i underpeform the index. What happen if a stock is down for 5 years and i sell it and then it recovers on 6th year. I underperform again. What if it stays flat for 8 years and then I am not adding or selling but i could have bought index fund and miss out in the return. Its just so hard for me.

    I believe your are real and want to share, the good and bad as it comes. Perfection is desired by some and it causes unhappiness because its not manageable from one moment in time to another.
    Do you and hopefully others have the independent thought to figure out how to be themselves. Its easier to hate on others that to work on one self to grow and evolve.
    You are truly appreciated and stand strong.

    In my view, the way people express themselves outside is the way they feel themselves inside.
    Rudeness for some people is natural because this is all they know from their internal journey so far.
    Matt, I love the way you mitigate such rudeness using it as an inspiration to be creative and to record this video.
    You don't blame, you don't complain, you don't backfire and that's one the beauties of your channel and the work you do.
    I know that the more success you have with this channel, the more rudeness you will attract,
    because it is common for many people to be jealous of others' success.
    Especially with the high level of transparency you are showing here.
    But overall, I think you are on the right path with the approach you have chosen.

    A well known investor said something about Index fund investing the other day that I couldn't help but agree with and will never forget. You may get lucky when you pick individual stocks and you may even make a lot of money, but being able to do that long term is what allows you to compound your money. Being able to pick the right stocks at their highs and lows is not only time consuming but nearly impossible to do consistently. If you really want to compound your money consistently invest in an index.

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  9 місяців тому

      Genuine question though - Is that well known investor using indexes?

    • @xvx4848
      @xvx4848 9 місяців тому

      @@mattderron No idea. Probably not but what I'm finding with individual picks is for every great investment I make I also make a horrible one. I might be up 400% on Meta but I'm also down 60% on 3M. I'm up 80% on Amazon but down 30% on Paramount. Ultimately I made a good call on Meta, Amazon and Google but I'm starting to move funds back into indexes just as a protection from ignorance.

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  9 місяців тому

      Ultimately, people should do what makes them comfortable. What I would say though, is that people like Buffett, Peter Lynch, etc all talk about how you're going to have losers and the idea is that the big winners should make up for the losers over time. In your example if you were truly up 400% on META, 80% on AMZN and then down 60% on MMM and 30% on PARA - just some basic math shows me you're likely way ahead of the game and likely beating the index with those 4 outcomes if you put a similar amount of money into each one.
      Now...it might not be something you're comfortable with and that's all that matters in the end. But this is why I think we should look at big picture instead of focusing on "how many we got wrong."
      The reason why people don't worry about it with indexes is that you're not judging your actual performance, it's all "the market" so it feels different.

  • @mplate1792

    It's hard to get through to some Index diehards. I had versions of this conversations many times.
    I tell them I'm mostly invested in index funds, but it is my individual picks like Apple and Microsoft that have provided the biggest returns. I've been investing for nearly 4 decades.
    They typically respond that index are still better in the long term. I'm nearly 40 years into what I expect will be a 50-year investment journey (then I'll pass away). How much of a long term do they want for proof?

    I am sorry to hear that you receive so much criticism. I just want to say I do agree with you. There is no one size fits all portfolio. It sounds like you got pounced on by a gang of Bogleheads. I like to point out, as an dividends growth investor, I don't plan to finance my retirement by selling my holdings. Instead, I want to generate enough dividends in order to pay for my living expenses. I just don't think broad market index funds will provide enough in dividends for me to do so. As a result, I invest in dividend growth stocks. I do agree with @WhoaNelly Jake. Whenever I am asked to complete an end of the year college course evaluation, the people who are satisfied or happy with the course rarely leave a comment. But, those who are dissatisfied, you always hear from them. So, you should know for every 1 critic there are indeed 10 people who agree with you.

    Stock picking itself is still generally speculation, and if you aren't it requires a lot of hard work. You don't really know for sure what's going to happen, you only take your best bet.
    In that regard, the index is pretty much the best risk free brain dead way of growing wealth. The market consistently trends upward over time, and will likely continue to do so (even if its only due to inflation and population growth related demand).
    If you like gambling or learning how to read financial statements and economic data, then you can handle individual stock picks.
    If not, just index. Only 10% of the population can handle stock picking, the rest should just index.

    On the comment that 98% of people cannot beat the market may be true.
    Regardless of whatever the percentage is, when investing in ETFs you are getting good stocks along with bad stocks. And I can tell you for certain the people that watch fundamentals do their homework do beat the market a majority of the time.
    Like you said everyone's strategy is different. Not one size fits all. your videos provide a good service for the people that want to try. If you're being judged on short periods of time, it's easy for someone to tell you you're doing something wrong. let's wait and see how you've done over 10 years or so.
    I have watched many of your videos and I don't agree with everything that you say but I'm certainly not going to criticize you for it. From what I have seen in the homework in which you do my bet is you will be that 2% that beats the market. Then I'll be right there with you brother.

    But you will not see this:
    MSFT +62% + dividends.
    META +310% + dividends.
    FWONA +88% no dividends.
    Or this:
    CURA -13% (was minus 64% at some point!!!) no dividends.
    SEA -35% and been that way for 12+ months.
    DIS -27+ no dividends.
    HUT varies +/- 24%.
    .
    Now you could have more fun:
    I trade on Footsy (now LSEG), TSX, FSE.

    Bro, I almost successfully timed the market, but I can't get over the fact that I messed up. I sold all my VFIAX in aug30, then on oct 31 I could have bought them again after they had dipped, but instead I was distracted with landing the job I have now and missed out on the 11k of growth. 5k if I just never sold at all.

      Thanks. We'll see how Lulu does this year with other consumer discretionary getting hammered. You never know, but I think their fundamentals are so good it's just a matter of what happens with demand and the economy

      It's tough to do that, the people I've seen be successful with it have their process identified (technical signals) and they just follow it religiously knowing that it will work sometimes and not others...but they have a system that seems to work for them more often than not (as far as I know...I don't know them personally)

    You can buy anything, any stock but only if it has value at this moment.
    Literally don't be a sheep, don't follow hype. Buy when there is blood in some sectors)

      @mattderron  9 місяців тому +1

      That's one strategy...but just because there's "blood in some sectors" doesn't make something a good investment and/or have enough of a growth outlook to meet your criteria. Plenty of people who bought "value" that never came back. Depends on what your goals are, but that's just my opinion.

    A lot of ppl just don’t have the time to research. I work from home half the time and have enough time to look into stocks and have beaten the market since I started. Why mimic the market with ETFs when you can beat it? You just have to be able to stomach the recessions and market downfalls

    I missed you during your earnings video but I have to say I'm going to ride out the storm with SBUX. I was shocked when you said that you might exit the position by next quarter. That's really abrupt and given the context of the whole picture a lot of people's sales are starting to decline because of what's going on. Management might have been optimistic at the beginning of the year and hopefully they won't make the same mistake again. Have your thoughts about exiting changed since sbux earnings?

    • @mattderron
      @mattderron  9 місяців тому +1

      I already exited actually. I just didn't see the point in holding on or what I was hoping to happen. Everybody will look at their earnings from their own perspective. For me, it was simply that amount of change in their outlook from one quarter to the next was so crazy and I just didn't have a lot of confidence in their plan.
      It's a different situation than say AAPL. AAPL has growth concerns too but they also have a ton of cash and can weather the storm until growth returns. SBUX doesn't have that luxury with the amount of debt they're carrying. I knew that in Feb when I thought about cutting them, but I figured..."even if they don't hit 15%-20% EPS, they should be high single digits or low double digits." But to go from 20% EPS to 0% in one quarter without a plan I feel good about (just my opinion) was a tough one for me to stick with.
      Plus for me personally I already have MCD as a big position in my portfolio which will have some similar challenges.
      Anyway...like I said in the video, I get why people will stick with it and that's totally cool. I may end up regretting the fact that I cut it but I'm ok with that.

      @@mattderron Yeah they are really cutting it close with their debt. I think they have two big payments this year or next with only 3 bil in cash on hand. Totally understandable- only time will tell what happens!

    If the new tax proposals go through investing will be significantly worse and harder for people to actually accumulate real wealth. I think I heard a long term capital gains change to where if you have over 1 mil in stocks they will remove long term capitals gains on it and tax it at ordinary income, and thats just some of the bad news. Why do so many people who have already made it want it to be significantly harder for newer people to become wealthy? None of the new proposals will do anything besides make it easier for the gov to spend all our money and raise inflation further

      I would be surprised if they go in as currently proposed. They seem to be very unpopular. Crazier things have happened though and the reality is that it's easier for folks to expect someone else to be responsible than to be responsible themselves unfortunately

      @@mattderron I would feel really bad for some folks I know who are close to retirement and are probably going to want to start selling out of their positions as they get older. I don't honestly think it will be popular amongst the people who ultimately write the laws but who knows these days
