Thank you! This was rather enjoyable. Some of the questions not in my wheelhouse I still knew or recognised. The BBC could make this edition a more regular occurrence.
Odd comment of the day - I really enjoyed the first set of questions 😀 Obvious when you heard the answer, but just obscure enough to make me think a bit.
@@tybaltmacbeth I made a point of expanding my knowledge in different fields as I refused to become an expert. My first degree was in English and History. Then I joined the army. After being invalided out I gained a degree in Linguistics and then, by distance, in Law, followed by, at the age of 45, a PhD in Education. Not one of my qualifications has been of any direct practical help in my life, but they were all worth pursuing since my education taught me how to learn and how to apply knowledge. I retired 4 years ago at the age of 50 after a relatively short, but lucrative, career working for myself. My only regret is that I failed to pursue an interest in Anthropology. Maybe when things get back to normal I shall look into that.
@@reignmyster Yeah, I know. I sound like a geezer, but not quite a grandpa.. My biggest problem in recent times was having to correct the errors made by my kids' teachers, and we are talking about teachers at private schools who are supposedly among the elite.
The normal student University challenge was filmed between February and May (if i recall) when Covid was higher. The christmas University Challenge was filmed a month or two ago ish
Ha! Good observation. I didn't notice it. So hopefully next year's students' version will be screenless. (However without Paxman, who, for all his faults, will be missed. So this in essence, is the last 'normal' set of episodes with Paxman.)
@@helenswan705 The next presenter was a disaster on his appearance on UC Christmas edition 2020. I do hope he's better at presenting compared to answering.

Embarrassing that a former President of Agnes Scott College in the US would not recognize Minnesota on a map (although Wisconsin is next door to it).
Minnesotan here absolutely howling at my state being featured and bamboozling the teams 😂
Quiz starts 5:20!
Oh my God, have been searching for this like an addict for the last week. Thank you!!
My pleasure mate
Same. Thank you very much, macbeth
Merry Christmas to you! Thank you for posting this video. I was looking for video of this and other initial episodes.👏
Glad it was helpful! I will be posting the rest of the videos this week.

17:59 I actually got the name of the singer of “Band of Gold” right-ha, funny, the things one can remember.
It's a fantastic song.
Some of these people were well past their mental best
Thanks Tybalt. Keep it up, please!
Will do
A very languid performance from BBC Paxman. So sad to think that this will be his last Xmas series.
Was there an episode where the contestants had to identify tunes of Christmas Carols. Including the Gustav Holst version of In The Bleak Midwinter?
These eight would not survive the first round of a local pub quiz. How were they selected?
The losing captain for her looks and sense of fun. And her knowledge, especially of soul music
Balliol were pretty good I feel

19:30 Note that he says IG .It is a parody of the Nobel prizes ,not the official ones .
SOAS should be disqualified for being boringly slow in bonus questions

Yes I will (hopefully)

Barely half way through and astounded at the lack of simple general knowledge or listening skills from Soas
Not surprising at all but invidious to say why not.

There must be some law that says that it can only be at Christmas time.

It's always fun how grumpy the comments are under these clips.

SOAS need to go back to pre-SOAS.
..whatever happened to the live studio audience...?
Thanks; much appreciated.
You're welcome!
Is it me or the questions markedly easier in the alumni show?
Christmas specials and charity specials mainly consist of 'celebrities', as with most quiz shows these are easier.
Thank you!
Agnes Scott beat Princeton in the College Bowl championship!
Thank you
Thanks for this.
Paxman always says "You have to come back" not "You can come back" in these Xmas episodes.
It seems that the contestants neglected their education as soon as they left university.
"An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less"
And they laughed at their ignorance!

On the bright side, it probably saved us 5 minutes of SOAS players conferring.
