The beauty of Rory was his purity. He never sold out to record producers never cared that his music wasn't popular on U.S radio stations. He was the antithesis of a pop star. He is known and loved all over Europe.

Thanks for another Rory reaction! Yes, Rory was all about the feeling, but he was also an incredibly clean player and his lack of special effects didn't allow for sloppy playing. He devised all sorts of tricks just using his hands and the guitar, including pulling on the strings, bending behind the nut, and using the tone pot for effects. I saw Rory live at Aberdeen Music Hall, Scotland in 1977. To this day still one of the best concerts I have ever seen. He and his band played for 2 plus hours, no support band. no fancy stage theatrics, just him and pure talent. He was explosive on guitar and the trio were so tight
My big sister was also there, I got all my music from her back then. She had a great time apparently, I was 14 so a bit young I was told. I saw Hawkwind a year later as my first concert...make of that what you will.

Great to see you check out Rory again. Saw Rory once in '78 and it remains the single best show I've ever seen - it was genuinely transformative. For me there are the "guitar greats" and then, there's Rory Gallagher - a one off, in a league of his own.

Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more.. Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.

Saw rory lots late 70s to 90s...just fantastic. Went with a couple of mates to lyceum in London...taste of ireland festival on st patricks say 1980. Promised a long set and was disappointed when he finished after an hour and 40...but hen he came back on and played another hour and 20 encores. At least i hink he did...free Guinness was on tap. Met him too in Leicester after gig at de montford hall, such a nice guy. Just the best.
Ha ,thats ace ! Rory G played many times in Cornwall where i live ! There are times when I cant remember why I went upstairs 10 minutes ago ! let alone what band supported who all that time ago ! But I do remember watching Queen arriving and helping their crew load up at Penzance winter gardens in 1974 ! I was a bit young to watch the gig ! My older bro did ! He introduced me to Rory G Irish Tour 74 the rest is history ! Cheers !

Not only an exceptional guitarist but a man who love d to perform. He would regularly do 2-3 hour concerts and you could see he was loving every minute of it.

The bass player was Jerry McEvoy who played with Rory right up to Rory's death in 1995. Rory's first successful band was 'Taste'. They appeared at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970 and stole the show. Rory appeared on Hendrix's radar at that festival.
There is a great video online of Joe Bonamassa performing "Sloe Gin" with Rory's guitar. From what I've read, Rory's brother met with Joe before the show and brought the guitar so they decided to do a song with it. Joe said he was a bit nervous playing it since it had been sitting around for over a decade (since Rory's death). It's worth a listen for the history alone. Cheers.
@@greygreen5610 So I've read. When I was (much) younger, I used to break strings every time I played out -- 1, 2, sometimes 3 a performance. A guitar tech told me I probably had "caustic sweat". At some point this stopped. Something changed; maybe my pH. Or maybe I just mellowed with time. :)

Funny that you should mention that. We were taught in history class at primary school that the Irish clans hired what the English called "Gallowglass" warriors from Scotland. These were soldiers%mercenaries, with some Viking blood. Tall, often red haired, with large broadswords and full chain mail tunics. The word "Gallowglass" was actually a combination of two Gaelic words, "Gall Oglach". Foreign warrior. The name Gallagher was originally "Gall a Comhair", meaning "Foreign Help" I.e a Scottish name originally!
