The last three popes resisted making this the 5th Marian Dogma. Mary's role must be viewed as subordinate to Christ, however much her motherly sacrifice merited the approval of God. There is only one Redeemer, the God-man Jesus Christ. If you see Christ's sacrifice as complete in itself, Mary cannot be elevated to Redemptrix. If 'Co-' is used in recognition of her subordinate or supporting role in salvation, it should be allowable. Hyperdulia should never come close to latria. Mary is not salvation, even if all of us seek her intercession for salvation. Christ is.
The title co-Redemptrix raised serious eyebrows when it was first mooted by John-Paul. It was not received well at the time and for all the right reasons. Theologically questionable and inappropriate.
Her being called coredemtrix is still subordinate to christ since he alone actively redeemed us. Mary is co-redemptrix because she has participated in our Redemption by consenting to be tye mother of tye Messiah, thus the savior is brought into tye world through her. And also because of the great suffering it caused to have her son die for our salvation. So she offered this suffering in union with christ for tye Love of God and for tye benefit of souls who were to profit by his death. For this reason she is called the coreedemptrix. But in christ alone we're we redeemed in virtue of his own merits.

Our Immaculate Mother being Co-Redemtrix doesn't mean she redeems us from sin. Not at all. It only means She said Yes to the Will of the Father at that very instant when the Angel Gabriel brought Her the news of the role which from time has been prepared for Her. She had the free will to say Yes or No to the Father but She said Yes. She, born without sin, the new Ark of the Covenant, She who shared and shares in Christ's passion. She who assumed into heaven body and soul, She who is made by our Father as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. She who continually intercedes for the Church militant and the Church suffering. Her role or titles if anything are understated. Definitely not exaggerated. I repeat again, Our Blessed Mother didn't and doesn't redeem us from sin. Only Christ did and does that. While it is true that she is not a godess, it is also true that the Church has taught that she is indeed participating in the redemption. This is the point that Francis denied. He said that she is not participating at all and that Saints and the church has taught erroneous in the past ("love leads us to exeggerated things"). There is a distinction made between the redemptive work of Christ, who is the sole Redeemer of humanity AND Mary, and the sharing in this redemption by Mary. I think that Francis doesn't know better. If you think he knows better but despite knowing the teaching of the Church and the Saints, choses to deny that, then you are basically accusing him of knowingly and willingly defecting from the Catholic Faith.

Your statement is confusing. He said that she is not a co-redemptrix and that means she is not a goddess. Both are logical. Why will the Pope denounce the Pachamama goddess? He is simply respecting the mixing of culture to the catholic. As long as a catholic believes in God and tries his/her best to practice the fundamental Christian values of love, forgiveness, generosity and compassion, who we are to condemn them? Thanks for the response. I don't think that verse is speaking of Mary in particular though - similarly, this logic would lead to redemption being from Eve. With due respect, this all seems so be reading theology into the text that just isn't there. Please let me know if there are any key verses that explicitly say that Mary is our co-redeemer.
He didn't explain why, but that it is an exaggeration. Every attempt to minimize the Blessed Mother has caused decay in the Catholic Church. If this is to satisfy a protest, there will never be enough concessions. Why do this when Catholic parishes are hanging on by their fingernails? In Orthodox Christianity she’s honored as the Theotokos(God-Bearer). She is venerated to high degree before all Saints and Angels, and is the Intercessor for the world. I love Mary, she is our intercessor, but sincerely I believe and many others probably agree. She wants us to Worship her son, not her. No matter how many apparitions say she’s this or that. She wants us to worship her Son and we ought to come to her for guidance like any mother would do for her child. That’s my two cents.

His opinion does not matter and has zero bearing on how God has willed Himself to relate to the Theotokos by virtue of her fiat. She is the New Eve and the Immaculate Conception. She is Co-Redemptrix alongside her Son, Jesus the Only-Begotten Son and Christ of the Living God, He is the New Adam and Redeemer of Man. Co-Redemptrix does not mean Co-Eternal nor Co-Equal with God as if to suggest Mary were a divine Person in nature (if anyone thinks that way, that's their problem/error, not the dogma's fault). The Divine Law includes the 10 Commandments. Jesus is eternal, and He *eternally* honors His MOTHER and His Father. Immediately after God only, Mary is EVERYTHING to those of us who are in Christ ourselves, as she is everything to Christ only immediately after His Father. Everything material of His Humanity, the very means of the Divine Will for accomplishing our Redemption on the Cross, came only from/through Mary. And she remained mystically and substantially united to Him through *everything*, shared in *everything*, perfectly. She is Co-Redemptrix. Misunderstandings (the fruit of holding to certain OPINIONS) are one thing, but submitting one's intellect and will to be hardened in them rather than yielding and conforming them to the Plan and Will of the Father is darksomely. Who dares oppose His Way and HIS Kingdom (and the glory to which Mary was raised first in the Mind of God before all the angels were created, and then fulfilled by His own Act of accomplishing her Immaculate Conception in the womb of St Anne) and call themselves "Christian"? God bless our Pope for finally weighing in on a grave error thats been pushed by so many in the church recently. Mary our mother is the Theotokos-Good Bearer, that is higher than any human ever could aspire spiritually but she does not redeem us, if she is co-redemptrix then so are the apostles and the saints who knew Him in life and never would anyone assert that. We Catholics can get lost sometimes in the human aspects of our faith to the point of exaggeration and this is dangerous if i leads us to worshiping a 4th member of the Trinity. Nowhere in the creed are the roots for such a wild and scandalous assertion as "co-redemptrix"....It seems that so many errors from conservative and liberal Catholics are magnified in the English speaking Catholic world...maybe this is a reaction to being surrounded by historically hostile protestantism and so we think we have to go extra far to distinguish ourselves or equally far to reduce our differences. This would speak to the prevalence of folks who think the Latin Mass is the only valid form of Eucharist because its in Latin and mirrors movements from th European traditions in the church. We gotta be carefu we don't depart from te gospel and Holy Tradition or we will st up idols. And for the folks who hated on the Native American Catholic image of Mary during the Amazon Synod, the Catholic church has always strived-at its best-to present tthe Holy Faith in the terms and language and cultures of the folks who hear it and as a Black Catholic descendant of enslaved folks, I value the fact that my faith is not tied to mimicking the culture of someone else-especially when those cultures have been the cause of my people's historic suffering-and that like St. Paul in 1 Cor. 9:19 we are "all things to all people in order to win as many as possible" When St. Paul encountered the "Unknown god" worshipped by the Athenians he declared that what they had been worshipping unbeknownst to them was the God of all creation who came in the form of Yeshua. Is it the possibility of idolatry that made so many "conservative traditionalists" upset or was it that the image, inspired by Native spirituality dared to assert that God-and Mother Mary-looks like Native folks too???? I suppose one would have to ask the question: If I don't consider Mary to be a "co-redeemer," does it at all affect my salvation through Jesus Christ or the importance of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God? Because if so, then one would have to prove that Christ's sacrifice alone was not enough for the Salvation of the world; if not, however, then why would this be an issue for anyone in regards to worshiping the Lord? Mary no doubt had a choice in the matter of becoming the Mother of Christ. The Holy Spirit waited for her reply. We know this. She gave birth to Him, nursed Him, and mothered Him throughout His life. She was His mother after all. But does this constitute exaltation when there is no mention of it in the Word of God, which endures forever? I have heard the argument several times, some in this post alone, that "Sola Scriptura" is not enough, and that one needs to refer to some theological source for clarification. One need only simplify the previous statement to read: The Word of God is not enough to prove this wrong, you need to refer to the doctrines and theories of Man. If this doesn't sound right to you, then you would be correct in your uneasiness, but if not, then I can only express concern for those who have decided that the Word of God is not enough for them to scrutinize, that is, to subject the beliefs of Men to the consistency of Scripture as to decide whether or not such things are true or false. If in fact, Sola Scriptura, is not enough for you, then nothing is. Jesus himself said, Luke 11:28 “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” This is straight from the mouth of God. So, again, if you cannot re-affirm such doctrine in the Word of God that was consistently cited by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that is, the Word is silent on such matters, then we too, the Bride of Christ, must also be silent. Mary as Co-redemptrix (meaning works with the Redeemer) is a title that has been used in centuries of church tradition and espoused by Popes Pius X, Pius XI and Benedict XV. Francis seems to always wade into "boiling water".

I Love how Jesus Mother was responsible for his first miracle and like most mothers ignored his reluctance. To deny that Mary is co-redeemer is to deny that the sufferings of the church, martyrs and saints have any efficacy towards the salvation of souls. Before Saint Peter and the apostles, before Saint Stevan and all the martyrs is the sacrifice of Mary Immaculate. As a matter of fact, Mary’s amen to Saint Gabriel Archangel allowed salvation to happen. Without Mary’s amen salvation would not have entered the world. Her amen is responsible for the Logos to become flesh and bread for us to eat and be saved. I pray to Saint Joseph so that Pope Francis awakens to the Mary Co-redeemer. I believe that the Holy See speaks of the Jesus Christ, the Saviour, the Redeemer, and where the Blessed Virgin Mary is peculiar in this magnificent place of intercession to her Son Jesus Christ.

I think there is a good point, as many protestant apologists always say Mary is treated as a goddess by Catholics. But, at the same time, it brings another question - which titles pope conciders to be exaggerated? Is "Queen of the Angels" exaggeration?
I do not know any Catholic who considers Mary as God. I taught CCD for twenty-five years in our Parish -- nobody even thought of her as God no less than calling her that.

There is a grave misunderstanding of Co- Redemptrix. Mary is the daughter of God the Father, the Mother of God the Son, , the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it follows that if Mary is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, she does the work of the Triune God and in the HYPERDULIA, she gives assent in the working of the Triune God and in His Redemptive Act and is therefore , Co- Redemptrix. In simple terms, families pray for the conversion of their loved ones especially sinners. So if one is praying for this conversion, are they not helping God in His Redemptive Act? So if Mary, in her sinless state, is helping her Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, in saving souls and humanity and doing His Will, does it not follow that She is the Mediatrix of all Graces and therefore, in essence the Co-Redemptrix?
Well, I would have to ask, in what verse or book of the Word of God does it mention that the Holy Spirit of God takes a spouse? Or is such an idea being presented because of a worldly view of marriage? Was Mary not already married to Joseph by the time of Jesus' birth? The Holy Spirit, being God, would not have taken an already married woman as a "spouse," and I say this hesitantly as He never would take a "spouse." The Bride of Christ, however, is not in the same context as this statement here. I hear you on this. As a Catholic I think reading more about Mariology from Catholic scholars will help gain some perspective. Mary is the Queen Mother of the New Testament (all Davidic Kings - even Jesus - have a powerful Queen Mother), just as those kings have a prime minister (in the New Testament, it's the pope). It is the will of the king (King Jesus) that his mother be honored, and that his prime minister (the pope) be obeyed. We worship Jesus and we honor Mary - not the same. It can get excessive, and Mary doesn't want that. If we had a choice between praying the Rosary and going to Mass to receive Christ in the Eucharist, we should choose the Mass, since the Eucharist is the "source and summit" of the Christian life.
Is Mary, the mother of Jesus, omnipresent? I ask this because the Pope says she is present with believers when they die. If someone dies in USA and someone dies in Australia and someone dies in Italy, etc, is Mary present with them all at the same moment in time? IF so she must be omnipresent. There is only one Redeemer, the God-man Jesus Christ. If you see Christ's sacrifice as complete in itself, Mary cannot be elevated to Redemptrix. If 'Co-' is used in recognition of her subordinate or supporting role in salvation, it should be allowable. Hyperdulia should never come close to latria. Mary is not salvation, even if all of us seek her intercession for salvation. Christ is.

Mary is co-redemptrix because she has participated in our Redemption by consenting to be tye mother of tye Messiah, thus the savior is brought into tye world through her. So she offered this suffering in union with christ for tye Love of God and for tye benefit of souls who were to profit by his death. For this reason she is called the coreedemptrix. Our Immaculate Mother being Co-Redemtrix doesn't mean she redeems us from sin. Not at all. There is a distinction made between the redemptive work of Christ, who is the sole Redeemer of humanity AND Mary, and the sharing in this redemption by Mary. I think that Francis doesn't know better. If you think he knows better but despite knowing the teaching of the Church and the Saints, choses to deny that, then you are basically accusing him of knowingly and willingly defecting from the Catholic Faith.
The POPE is wrong! His personal opinion does not change what the Mother Church teaches about the Blessed Virgin Mary as the co-redeemer.
In fact, we all become co-redeemer in, with and through Jesus when we accept HIM as our personal Lord, Savior and REDEEMER, to others in this world!

In Orthodox Christianity she’s honored as the Theotokos(God-Bearer). She is venerated to high degree before all Saints and Angels, and is the Intercessor for the world. I love Mary, she is our intercessor, but sincerely I believe and many others probably agree. She wants us to Worship her son, not her. No matter how many apparitions say she’s this or that. His opinion does not matter and has zero bearing on how God has willed Himself to relate to the Theotokos by virtue of her fiat. She is the New Eve and the Immaculate Conception. She is Co-Redemptrix alongside her Son, Jesus the Only-Begotten Son and Christ of the Living God, He is the New Adam and Redeemer of Man.
Co-Redemptrix does not mean Co-Eternal nor Co-Equal with God as if to suggest Mary were a divine Person in nature (if anyone thinks that way, that's their problem/error, not the dogma's fault).
The Divine Law includes the 10 Commandments. Jesus is eternal, and He *eternally* honors His MOTHER and His Father.
Immediately after God only, Mary is EVERYTHING to those of us who are in Christ ourselves, as she is everything to Christ only immediately after His Father. Everything material of His Humanity, the very means of the Divine Will for accomplishing our Redemption on the Cross, came only from/through Mary. God bless our Pope for finally weighing in on a grave error thats been pushed by so many in the church recently. Nowhere in the creed are the roots for such a wild and scandalous assertion as "co-redemptrix"....It seems that so many errors from conservative and liberal Catholics are magnified in the English speaking Catholic world...maybe this is a reaction to being surrounded by historically hostile protestantism and so we think we have to go extra far to distinguish ourselves or equally far to reduce our differences. This would speak to the prevalence of folks who think the Latin Mass is the only valid form of Eucharist because its in Latin and mirrors movements from th European traditions in the church. We gotta be carefu we don't depart from te gospel and Holy Tradition or we will st up idols. And for the folks who hated on the Native American Catholic image of Mary during the Amazon Synod, the Catholic church has always strived-at its best-to present tthe Holy Faith in the terms and language and cultures of the folks who hear it and as a Black Catholic descendant of enslaved folks, I value the fact that my faith is not tied to mimicking the culture of someone else-especially when those cultures have been the cause of my people's historic suffering-and that like St. Paul in 1 Cor. 9:19 we are "all things to all people in order to win as many as possible" When St. Paul encountered the "Unknown god" worshipped by the Athenians he declared that what they had been worshipping unbeknownst to them was the God of all creation who came in the form of Yeshua. Is it the possibility of idolatry that made so many "conservative traditionalists" upset or was it that the image, inspired by Native spirituality dared to assert that God-and Mother Mary-looks like Native folks too???? I suppose one would have to ask the question: If I don't consider Mary to be a "co-redeemer," does it at all affect my salvation through Jesus Christ or the importance of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God? Because if so, then one would have to prove that Christ's sacrifice alone was not enough for the Salvation of the world; if not, however, then why would this be an issue for anyone in regards to worshiping the Lord?
Mary no doubt had a choice in the matter of becoming the Mother of Christ. The Holy Spirit waited for her reply. We know this. She gave birth to Him, nursed Him, and mothered Him throughout His life. She was His mother after all. But does this constitute exaltation when there is no mention of it in the Word of God, which endures forever? I have heard the argument several times, some in this post alone, that "Sola Scriptura" is not enough, and that one needs to refer to some theological source for clarification. One need only simplify the previous statement to read:

If this doesn't sound right to you, then you would be correct in your uneasiness, but if not, then I can only express concern for those who have decided that the Word of God is not enough for them to scrutinize, that is, to subject the beliefs of Men to the consistency of Scripture as to decide whether or not such things are true or false. If in fact, Sola Scriptura, is not enough for you, then nothing is. So, again, if you cannot re-affirm such doctrine in the Word of God that was consistently cited by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that is, the Word is silent on such matters, then we too, the Bride of Christ, must also be silent. Why did Christ Jesus came and sacrificed His precious life for sinners like us?
Christ (God's Word made into flesh), came because through flesh (Adam's flesh) sin entered the world, and then because of sin death entered the whole earth. Through flesh(Jesus Christ's flesh), the earth will be saved, sin is destroyed, and the curse of death shall be broken, death and the grave shall be cast into hell.
Christ, who is God's Word made into flesh, sacrificed His life for us. He was crucified for our sins and transgressions.
Christ died, and on the third day He resurrected in the flesh, conquering death and the grave. Now, Christ is seated in Heaven, at the right hand of Power(God). Through Christ's sacrifice we gain Salvation through God's abundant mercy and grace. We are reconciled and recompensed back to God, through the shed blood of His beloved Son Christ Jesus.

I Love how Jesus Mother was responsible for his first miracle and like most mothers ignored his reluctance. There is a grave misunderstanding of Co- Redemptrix. Mary is the daughter of God the Father, the Mother of God the Son, , the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, it follows that if Mary is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, she does the work of the Triune God and in the HYPERDULIA, she gives assent in the working of the Triune God and in His Redemptive Act and is therefore , Co- Redemptrix.
In simple terms, families pray for the conversion of their loved ones especially sinners. So if one is praying for this conversion, are they not helping God in His Redemptive Act?
So if Mary, in her sinless state, is helping her Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, in saving souls and humanity and doing His Will, does it not follow that She is the Mediatrix of all Graces and therefore, in essence the Co-Redemptrix?
Well, I would have to ask, in what verse or book of the Word of God does it mention that the Holy Spirit of God takes a spouse? Or is such an idea being presented because of a worldly view of marriage? Was Mary not already married to Joseph by the time of Jesus' birth? The Holy Spirit, being God, would not have taken an already married woman as a "spouse," and I say this hesitantly as He never would take a "spouse." The Bride of Christ, however, is not in the same context as this statement here. I strongly urge you to re-examine your position on this matter through prayer, perhaps fasting, and through comparison with the Word of God, which endures forever. The rosary is what was compiled by the will of the holy church, I agree with Catholicism on a lot of things even the pope, but when it comes to Mary I’m hesitant
I understand that an angel was praising Mary like that (angels are of a higher order) so therefore humans ought to do more

I hear you on this. As a Catholic I think reading more about Mariology from Catholic scholars will help gain some perspective. Mary is the Queen Mother of the New Testament (all Davidic Kings - even Jesus - have a powerful Queen Mother), just as those kings have a prime minister (in the New Testament, it's the pope). It is the will of the king (King Jesus) that his mother be honored, and that his prime minister (the pope) be obeyed. We worship Jesus and we honor Mary - not the same. It can get excessive, and Mary doesn't want that. If we had a choice between praying the Rosary and going to Mass to receive Christ in the Eucharist, we should choose the Mass, since the Eucharist is the "source and summit" of the Christian life.

Is Mary, the mother of Jesus, omnipresent? I ask this because the Pope says she is present with believers when they die. If someone dies in USA and someone dies in Australia and someone dies in Italy, etc, is Mary present with them all at the same moment in time? IF so she must be omnipresent. Once I brought the Word of God into my life, rather than depending on the doctrine and theology of other men, God showed me the faults in the Catholic Church. I'm still learning. I'm not gonna read all of that. But why did Christ tell the apostles, "whoever sins you forgive they are forgiven. And whoevers sons you retain. They are retained." If man can't forgive sins, why did Christ tell them they could? Because it's not man, but the Holy Spirit that lives inside them. Do you not understand?
