The Battle of the Camel, also known as the Battle of Jamel or the Battle of Basra, took place outside of Basra, Iraq, in 36 AH (656 CE). The battle was fought between the army of the fourth caliph Ali (r. 656-661), on one side, and the rebel army led by Aisha, Talha and Zubayr, on the other side. Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, while Aisha was a widow of Muhammad, of whom Talha and Zubayr were both prominent companions. Ali emerged victorious from the battle, Talha and Zubayr were both killed, and Aisha was sent back to Hejaz afterward. The triumvirate had revolted against Ali ostensibly to avenge the assassination of the third caliph Uthman (r. 644-656), although Aisha and Talha are both known to have actively opposed him. The three also called for the removal of Ali from office and for a Qurayshite council (shura) with Talha and Zubayr to appoint his successor
The rebel army was led by Ameer Muavia and Hazrat Aisha, Hazrat Talha and Hazrat Zubair were accompanied and all three left one by one the battle.

Here is the whole story short!
Unfortunately, Muslims divided into two different groups during the era of Hazrat Ali (RA), but in actuality, this all started in the era of Hazrat Umar (RA).
Here is the thing: Abu Sufyan was the last ruler of the Arabs before accepting Islam, belonging to the Banu Umayyah family. His son Mu'awiyyah (RA) was the governor of Sham and did not accept Hazrat Ali as the ruler of Muslims, claiming that he deserved rulership.
In Islam, it is prohibited to claim any kind of leadership. That's why Hazrat Ali (RA) had to go against them so that Muslims could not divide into two groups.
Hazrat Zubair (RA) unfortunately joined the army of Mu'awiyyah unknowingly, considering that Hazrat Ali was on the wrong side. As Muhammad Ali Mirza mentioned a hadith which states that Hazrat Ali came to Hazrat Zubair and recalled to him the words of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

It was not about caliphate it was about long history of islam just after the assasination of prophet Mohammad s.a.w. it was more about the power game Vs ethics and ideology of islam where every all of the people were eying on power and control Imam Ali was concerned about the teachings preachinfs ethics and ideology of Islam due to which there came a lot of unrest.
