Jesus saves us baptized with The Holy Spirit and Holy Water from original sin. Sins committed after Baptism have to be confessed, we have to receive absolution and serve our Penance to be forgiven by God. That’s why He instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). The Priest is In Persona Christi when enacting Gods Sacraments. God exhorts through His Priests. He gave them His authority and power to enact His Sacraments in His One Only True Apostolic Catholic Church. 2 Cor 5:18-20, Jn 20:21-23, Mt 16:18-19, 18:17-18.
If we die in mortal sin, we chose to be separated from God. He honors our choices for eternity. There’s no hope left.
If we die in Venial sin, we have to be purged of it to enter Heaven, as nothing impure can enter. Purgatory is a complete cleansing of our souls on the way to Heaven.
      1 Cor 3:15, Mt5:25-26, 1 Pet 3:18-20, 1 Jn 5:16-17, Jn 19:11, Rev 21:27, 2 Macc 12:43-46

A couple of years ago a visiting priest who had said a weekday Mass I had attended that morning at my parish stayed to hear confessions, and I decided to go (my practice is to go monthly). While I was in the confessional, after having confessed my sins, the priest paused and asked if I had any sins I had forgotten that I needed to confess. That caught me off guard because I had never been asked that before in confession, and I honestly answered that I didn't know. Then I started to get a little anxious, wondering if he had the ability to read hearts, and I prayed for God to show me if there was a sin I had forgotten, and suddenly a sin from my youth came to my mind, and I realized I had never confessed it (I didn't make my first confession until the age of 35 as a convert). So I confessed it and the priest gave me absolution. I felt like that had been a moment of grace from the Holy Spirit. I don't think I needed to confess it because it hadn't been forgiven but because there was a spiritual benefit in confessing it openly in the sacrament of reconciliation. I still don't know if that priest could read my heart or was just prompted to ask that question, but it was a remarkable experience for me.

Appreciate this! I am a conservative confessional Lutheran and private confession and absolution crucial parts of our church and piety. Our Augsburg Confession says this, "Private Absolution ought to be retained in the churches, although in confession an enumeration of all sins is not necessary. For it is impossible according to the Psalm: Who can understand his errors? Ps. 19:12." And "For those who have fallen after Baptism there is remission of sins whenever they are converted
and that the Church ought to impart absolution to those thus returning to repentance. Now, repentance consists properly of these two parts: One is contrition, that is, terrors smiting the conscience through the knowledge of sin; the other is faith, which is born of the Gospel, or of absolution, and believes that for Christ’s sake, sins are forgiven, comforts the conscience, and delivers it from terrors. Then good works are bound to follow, which are the fruits of repentance." Blessings :)

If it's on your conscience, the only thing for forgiveness is a desire to be different and forgiven. It's the lack of desire to be repentant that is the real basis of what's wrong with not taking something to confession which is weighing on your conscience.

I never saw confession as being about a laundry list of sins. To me it's about acknowledging that I'm a sinner in need of healing. Telling the priest about my sins allows me to identify areas in my life where I am struggling. It also allows me to at least receive some counsel or penance about how to repair those areas. (I like to confess face to face at a time when the priest has time to discuss things should he desire.)
And yes, I've confessed sins that would make a sailor blush as it were. It's hard to not be embarrassed, but worth the cathartic nature of the healing.
I would add that venial sins are absolved with every sacrament, not just reconciliation. Given my spotty memory, this is a great relief to me.

I am so happy to hear this explanation. Like so many people, I had gone MANY years without reconciliation. After listening to Catechism in a Year, I realized that I was in BIG trouble receiving Communion with some pretty serious sins on my soul. After I received absolution, I started remembering several sins that I forgot to mention to the priest, and I was worried that those sins weren't forgiven. Now I know that they are, and am relieved! I'm now preparing for Divine Mercy Sunday. It will be so wonderful to the slate swept clean!! 🙏❤️🙏

Well, I was in similar situation some years back. After 15 years I went to confession. I was clear that I forgot to confess some sins which I simply forgot about. During subsequent confessions I recalled those sins and confessed them one by one. But I was difficult for me to do so; I felt as if I was still somewhat overwhelmed by my conscience. Finally I told the priest about this issue and he told me that God has already forgiven all my sins and "there is no sense to get back to the past". After that I really felt as "new born" :)

Basically, if you confess all the sins you remember after making an honest examination of conscience, _every sin you've ever committed, no matter how serious or mortal, is forgiven._ You can mention sins you later remember in confession for your own peace of mind or counseling, but not in order for them to be forgiven (since they are already forgiven).

Confessing a sin for peace of mind is really not the best reason to confess. Rather confessing for spiritual benefits like grace to overcome such sins in future and most importantly to express sorrow for offending such a loving God. When u love someone, you will never be tired of saying you're sorry for past offenses.

Nancy, it is both/and, not either/or. We Catholics confess our sins inside and outside of the Sacrament of confession. In fact, we are encouraged to do a daily examination of conscience and confess our sins daily. But Jesus established the sacrament of confession for a reason (after His Resurrection, recorded in John 20:21-23). He gives us His very life of grace in the sacraments, so when we confess our sins through the priest, we receive grace that heals and forgives us and strengthens us against temptation and sin. And it also helps one grow in humility because it's much more humbling to confess one's sins to another human being who doesn't already know them than it is only to God, who already knows them. I was an evangelical Protestant for over 20 years and confessed my sins regularly to God, but I have experienced the power, healing and liberation through the sacrament of confession in a way that I never did confessing on my own, and I praise and thank God for His wisdom, mercy and goodness in giving us this beautiful means of forgiveness and experiencing His mercy and love.

In fact I went to a mass for the first time ever this past Saturday. I still have a lot of hold ups though on Catholic theology, so maybe Matt, or I guess any Catholic who is reading this can answer. Do you guys only confess your sins to your priest/father? I mean I personally pray everyday for God to cleanse me and confess my sins directly to him. Do Catholics do that as well and also confess to their priest? Or do you just wait and confess only to your priest?

We should take a look at this:
83 Q. If a mortal sin, forgotten in confession, is afterwards remembered, are we
bound to confess it in another confession?
    A. If a mortal sin forgotten in confession is afterwards remembered we are certainly
bound to confess it the next time we go to confession.
This is the Catechism of Saint Pius X, in the section of the Sacrament of Penance.

Write it down for the next time. Write it on your calendar, so that you can remember for next time. Our confessional is a hot box, totally black out and I can barely think in there, sweating bullets let alone remember everything but there is no way to bring a note, you can't see anything. So if I miss something, I try to remember for next time. Confession is a wonderful experience.

Being Orthodox, we always place a specific emphasis on sins we can and can't remember. I don't know if any Latin prayers have this (I would assume the older, original Latin versions do) but our morning and evening prayers always stress asking God to forgive us our sins "whether in knowledge or in ignorance, whether in thought, word, or deed...". And, usually when we confess, we ask to be forgiven for all sins we are conscious of and unconscious of.
We have to remember that God is not autistic. As Father Mark said, He is not unreasonable. He will also give you the grace to remember certain sins you might have forgotten if you ask Him.

Life is research and development. In the process we make lots of mistakes. That's why Jesus (love) forgives.
But Jesus asks US to repent and learn from our mistakes so that we don't repeat them.
Also, if we can somehow put back the joy that we sucked out ...that is even better.
I am an old man who has accidentally sucked a lot of joy out of the lives of others.
So I spend my later years trying to be the best one man cheerleading squad that I can be. Hopefully, I can replace the joy that I ignorantly sucked out...before I drop the clothing of this physical plane.

I've got a question here which I haven't seen answered directly on another video or source yet. I only started returning to confession and restart my Catholic faith last August admittedly because I got devil-scared and got to know the concept of Hell through a friend who was converting to Catholicism just last year as well but for real. It was hard for me to reconcile with a lot of truths and realities about Christianity vs the modern, secular kind I was used to being exposed all throughout my life before. I am an Anglo-American who was born and raised in Spain by the way, Seville to be specific.
While it was really hard at first to reconcile with some of my worst habits that I found out were mortal sins and confess them sooner than later to be in the faith otherwise the Devil could entrap me further, my idea was to confess two that were on my mind the first day I went back to confession which was only my second time after the first time I ever went being when I was 9 before my First Communion and that was organized by the Catechism two months in advance. So I went there after a long time, confessed those two sins as well as confessing the fact that it was my first time coming back after a long time being far from God's faith (though really it was because I was unaware of it and believed the Conservative Catholic Christian movement was nothing short of a political reactionary movement to go back in time instead of promoting the truth). I felt good but my intention, however, thinking it was valid and the priest never inquired anything beyond forgiving me of those sins, was to go there the next time little by little to confess the other sins that I had to confess, those being every sin that comes to my head and is affecting me presently when really I should have had a clear conscience in confessing everything in the first place that I could think of until I obviously had my time because it was before a mass I did it, and the same applies to other times I would go later. Not that I wanted to withhold any sin that I didn't repent or didn't want to admit while confessing others at the forefront of my head. I took it as a counseling experience of talking about some of your flaws one day, and then talking about some other flaws another day to fix by going little by little though I'm aware that with sins it's a journey to penance, contrition and repentance before the Lord. While I'm aware this may not be a sin of sacrilege as I didn't voluntarily want to withhold anything or hide anything as I've gone little by little without saying everything, I do admit to have fallen a bit short with some of my sins due to excessive confidence and some degree of embarrasment. However, does this mean that after fully knowing this, for every time I may intentionally fall short and withhold a sin to postpone or leave it for the next time and I'm aware that 1. My previous sins in the previous confession where I harboured one or more won't be forgiven and 2. I would have commited the sin of sacrilege in confession for not doing a valid confession, does that automatically mean that my previous sins listed won't only not be forgiven by God until I repent the other sin/s but they will be nullified all together in the sense that no matter how many I listed and tried to repent, I have to start over again remembering them to confess them with the other sins of grave matter I have intentionally missed as a means to leave them for another day in the future so as to not go so overboard (again, time constraints would be completely legitimate if it's for the priest and other people's matters) or even if they are past sins I stopped comitting before coming to Christ because I realized they were wrong and thought I was liberated if I apologized to comitting them towards every person or even myself but just never repented to God about them yet which was because I was far from the real faith and therefore must confess them the next chance I get? If someone is able to read and answer this, their help shall be greatly appreciated. God bless.

I recently went to reconciliation after about 40 years of avoiding this very difficult sacrament. What I did was to go through the ten commandments and the seven deadly sins. I wrote down as many instances that I could recall when I committed a sin against God. During my confession, I pulled out my list and reviewed ALL those sins I could recall, though maybe not delving deeply into detail.
When you go to reconciliation and INTENTIONALLY leave out sins due to shame, pride or embarrassment, remember that your lack of candor with the priest is IN ITSELF a sin and NONE of your sins from that particular reconciliation have been forgiven. On the other hand, if you honestly forget to mention a sin during reconciliation, you have been forgiven that sin. God is merciful.
I know it's difficult, but just "bite the bullet" as they say and lay ALL your sins that you can recall out onto the table.

@@loubee8503 thank you for your words. I shall intend to be more honest with myself from now on which is what I most intend to do. My only doubt left is if a sin I used to commit in the past I never actually repented to a priest before God, I apologized for and rectified to not commit said sin or mistake in life again but never had actually repented on it before the church, means I ought to which I did lay out in one confession a bit after I wrote that long comment. Does that mean that has to go included no matter now long it's been since you sinned. Plus, if I do indeed commit the sin of sacrilege during Confession by intentionally hiding a sin like say, gossiped about this person the other day and acted smug about it but I acted really lazy for several days and must confess that first and foremost as it's crucial for my development and backs me the most away from my faith. But I leave out the gossiping like I don't feel that guilty because I don't think it was that bad. I still have a way to go regarding God, but I'm afraid to fall into scrupulosity. Just supposing that last instance happened and it doesn't matter how many grave sins I confess. If I intentionally leave out any one instance of pride or lust or whatever. For every ten mortal sins I confess, none of them shall be forgiven so I shall have to start recounting them over again along with the one I intentionally left out plus added the sin of sacrilege already to the list of mortal sins for not having had that awareness during confession and proved a feeling of presumption. It's simply getting out the 10 commandments and 7 capital sins out again one by one for every sacrilege mistake one makes of pride, shame or embarassment instead of showing true repentance regardless of the gravity of the other sins I did confess and regret.

@@lilyw.719 you remind me of the old me. Overthinking lol. I guess it's better to overthink than under though. God loved you lily. I used to be incredibly scrupulous. Just confess when you can get to confession if you have mortal sins. Try to remember what you can and whatever you forgive is forgiven too. God does not want your relationship with Him to be one of calculating and measuring like that. Imagine if we had to do all that with our parents, for example.
Christ used the sacrament of confession to forgive sins but there are times when confession is not available or maybe you just got in a bad car wreck and want to tell God then. You can. The sacraments is primarily how God wishes to give us absolution under normal circumstances, but it is not the only way. Christ is not bound by his own sacraments. That's why the Church has things like baptism by desire, for example, even though the person never formally was baptized physically with water.
Just keep loving God, trying your best, confess serious sins as soon as ya can. I personally kick the can down the road and I wanna end doing that. As far as devotions go, those aren't mandatory but just extra help. I personally love the rosary and divine mercy chaplet. They help me. I've dealt with some sexual related addiction for a long time. If you have some kind of addiction I invite you to talk to a good priest. I used to think I was in mortal sin for years and years but came to realize that I didn't meet the criteria for mortal sin because as an addict I couldn't give full consent to sinning since the brain was messed up. I bring up my addiction in case you struggle with one and fret over it. I wish I would've talked to a priest 15 years earlier cause it would have saved me a boat load of scrupulosity and fear. If you do have an addiction, we do have the responsibility to try and get better and get help. God will be there as we struggle and rise likely 1000 times.
Believe in God's merciful love and power. Christ died for lily. Remember the thief on the cross. He was repentant and spent probably a life in sin, serious sin likely. But he realized who Christ was and that what he did was wrong and longed for Christ's mercy. He personally didn't have time for a normal confession hanging on the cross but Jesus gave him absolution then and there because He is not bound by his own sacraments.
Just keep trying and getting up again. God is a God of love. He loves you.

@@johnp.6043 the video says yes, God forgives all sin. Some sins are more serious though cf 1 John 5:16-17. Jesus preached to souls in prison 1 Peter 3:19 so they weren't in heaven yet at that time

If I know of a mortal sin I have committed since my last confession and do not confess it intentionally, I understand that that renders the confession invalid and that it would be sinful to do so. If I'm in confession and have venial (not mortal) sins on my mind that I intentionally do not confess, is that sinful or does that make the confession invalid? It is probably too much to confess all of your venial sins just because you couldn't remember them all but I'm not sure if you have to confess all the venial sins you can think of or just do a portion of them. I would really appreciate an answer if anyone knows. Thanks

I don't understand. Are you saying if go to confession I cant leave out a sin to save time. If that were the case I'd be there all day. I haven't been to confession in over 40 years.
I have a lot of sins to confess. What if my intention is to confess it at another time.
    This is disheartening.

I have heard that there is no Confession in the Greek Orthodox Catholic Church. Can you clarify this for me? Also is this one of the reasons there is the division between the Greek Orthodox Catholic Church and the Roman Catholic Church? Thank You, Be Well, and God Bless, Tom.

Call the parishes around you, a priest should come to visit and give you the sacraments. Also, consider getting a brown scapular and enrolling. But of course most importantly do everything you can to get a priest over.

Say if you go to confession weekly and you commit a mortal sin in between confession and you forget about the mortal sin and you die before your next weekly confession. Will that person go to hell or heaven?

Yes, it is called the Turtledove Sacrifice in the Old Testament if you refuse to confess Christ as the final priest, final Temple, and final sacrifice. You are practicing Jewish Teshuvah, which is confession in lieu of Temple sacrifice, yet, Christ said He is the final sacrifice. Think the diaspora Jews ended up in Rome…
