I've had a MK 1 and have owned a MK 3 for just over a year now, thank you Mazda!! I love this ad as well, really invokes the spirit of the Car, makes me want to jump in the cabin and go for a drive right now!! Now where did I put my Car keys?

I just learned that pop-up headlights for brand new production cars aren't actual illegal, just more trouble to develop/make than normal ones. They were to solve a problem with US headlight height regulations on low cars that doesn't exist any more. Pedestrian safety is an issue too, but that could maybe be solved by using a dual hinge/spring system that allows the lights to be pulled backwards into the body when a pedestrian impact is detected! In conclusion, you could put pop-up headlights on the next MX-5, Mazda. You could do it if you wanted to.
