Great review! Drawing is my second favorite book of the series, after Wizard and Glass. What King did with the lobstrosities shocked me at the time, to have such a permanent effect on the characters, I was floored. And ugh, I forgot about Eddie's heroin addiction.....what was his brother's name? Henry? The eminent junkie and sage?
And yes, Detta....sigh....the words 'HONKY MAHFAH' will ever be etched in my psyche.

Thanks! Yes, it’s Henry Dean. I’d love to chat with you more about this series one day. It’s unlike anything else I’ve read. People say that a lot, but it’s true in this case. King is willing to do stuff to characters that few other authors would have the guts or the imagination to do. Very provocative, and in a good way.

This review further motivates me to read this book and continue the series. I love how you discussed King's ability to delve deeply into the human condition. Although I've only read two of his books (Gunslinger and 11/22/63), I have confidence in his ability to write extremely realistic, nuanced characters. I also have confidence in his ability to disturb me through their experiences. Thank you for continuing to influence my TBR with so many great reviews!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy IMO, The Waste Lands is the "best" Dark Tower book. It's where, as I've explained to others in my family while I was reading the book, the world seems to open up like a vast canvas and you start to understand the shape that everything is going to take from here on out. It's essentially the most direct example of the platonic form of a Dark Tower book. It's closest to what I expected from the series, although what I ultimately got was even better. I'm not sure if that's a good way of explaining how I feel about it, but I don't really know what to say to get my point across.

I've read all of Stephen King's books (think I've mentioned before). This is the one where I I knew Dark Tower would be something different and special from the normal stuff he writes. One thing you may not aware of, is that quite a few other books by him seem to be in the same place/multiverse as the Dark Tower series. And though the series has tons of easter eggs of his other works I do recommend reading 'Salem's Lot before The Wolves of Cala, which is a kind of semi-prequel to it. Same with Insomnia and the final book. Are they necessary? Definitely no. But they are good stories and make you appreciate more what King does with the series.

This series is sooooo good! All the better for those like myself who grew up reading King. I found the first book to be a nice solid character study and this book to be an expansion of the rest of the gang that Roland joins. The characters are amazing and the UNIVERSE/WORLD are so great. I love the cross between fantasy and sci-fi in these book all together. I feel both are fragile and thus real. I love how many questions you get and how many get answered, while others are not because our main characters don't know either. It is for sure in my top 10 series. I have a few complaints with pacing at times in the later books, but I find it to be purely personal taste, rather than 'bad.' Hope that makes sense. Thanks for the review as always Sir Chase! To me, this is his most inventive and creative book of the series. However, anytime King tries to write black characters, as with Detta Walker, it's cringey in a "bad" Tarantino way. I'm not asking him to be Toni Morrison, but it's like King never met a black person before he was 30.

Detta is extreme, for sure, almost a caricature, in fact. I really liked Odetta, though, and I’m hoping her arc will prove interesting, rich, and complex. King won’t match Toni Morrison, for sure, but I doubt anyone else could either. Great to hear from you!
