Vaccinations for expecting mothers The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that it is best for women to be up-to-date on all routine vaccinations before becoming pregnant. It is especially important to stay current with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before becoming pregnant. Rubella infection in pregnant women can cause serious complications and birth defects. Keep in mind, that live vaccines like the MMR should be given at least a month before pregnancy. Two vaccines are routinely recommended during pregnancy by the CDC. One is the inactivated flu vaccine since a pregnant woman who gets the flu is at risk for serious complications and hospitalization. The CDC also recommends the Tdap (whooping cough vaccine) during each pregnancy. Ideally, this vaccine should be given between 27 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. Pregnant women can encourage all family members and caregivers of their infant to also get vaccinated with the Tdap and flu shot.
A pregnant woman planning international travel should also talk to her doctor about what vaccines she may need.
Quality prenatal care that includes proper vaccination can help keep pregnant women and their growing family healthy.
Ask your doctor and pharmacist any questions you may have about vaccines during pregnancy.
