Warkworth Castle and hermitage is a must-see next time you can. The village below the castle is exquisite and has a river running all the way around it, like a fairytale village.
The garden at Belsay Hall is unique and beautiful - it’s well worth a visit. Consider joining English Heritage if you plan to visit several sites like Belsay, Warkworth Castle, sites along Hadrian’s wall, etc. We spent 10 days in Northumberland on our last holiday and I would go back in a minute.
Great suggestion, we've never heard of Belsay Hall, will be sure to visit when we're next back in Northumberland. We've been English Heritage members for a couple of years now, it's very useful to us because we can't get enough of castles! Thank you for watching!
I grew up in northumberland and moved to Canada 30 yrs ago. 3 yr ago I took my kids home and literally hit every spot on your list. Great job capturing the essence of the county.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! We only visited for 1 week so I'm sure there were many things I missed out. I definitely need to get back up to Northumberland to see more!
You should have gone further north to Berwick-upon-Tweed. The most northern town in England, changed hands with the Scottish 13 and a full of History including the Elizabeth Walls
Just moved to Northumberland and been to a lot of these places already though still a couple I have yet to do. One place that wasn’t on here that I love is Warkworth castle and Hermitage. The castle itself is cool but what I find really special is the hermitage. You take a little row boat across the river and it’s a small monastery carved out in the inside of the rock. It’s a really cool secluded place and it’s amazing how it’s all carved out inside the cliff.
The Hermitage has a very spiritual feeling to me . The castle has quite a dark history though , but Warkworth is beautiful place . It's been many long years since I was there . I wonder if the main street is still lit with little twinkling fairy lights at Christmas , because it used to look so magical , especially if it was a frosty night . I want to go back there once more , but unfortunately i'm not in the best of health . I have many happy memories though. 🤍
Cheaper parking for Hadrian's wall (Peel crag/Crag lough - Steel rigg) can be found at the pub on the main road 150 yards past the visitor center at the cross road turning for steel rigg car park. It's £5 per day and they refund you parking cost if you go in for a pint after your walk. They do good food too.
If you go again, you should head to the North Pennines. Specifically Allenheads and Allendale area. Really rugged, lots of fascinating minding history from the start of the Industrial Revolution and the people are really friendly and there are lots of good pubs. It’s also a good area for live folk music. I’m from Northumberland and would recommend this part as it’s off the beaten track and has a wonderful and unique spirit.
Thank you for the suggestion, I've just been looking at that area and it looks amazing! I already couldn't wait to explore Northumberland again so I'll certainly add your suggestion to my list! And there's nothing better than a great live music scene!
Indeed, Cragside was gorgeous! and I wish I could have spent more time exploring Alnwick and Barter Books as there was so much to see, but we had a castle booking to get to to sadly had to rush through a bit
Angel of the north , locally known as the angel of death . . Known because of the number of accidents caused by rubbernecking by motorists after it was constructed . . Causing many casualties and obviously , deaths .
Angel of the North is in Gateshead District. Gateshead has never been in Northumberland. Prior to the creation of Tyne and Wear, it was in County Durham. Nice video though.
I live in Gateshead the Angel of the North is in Gateshead Tyne and Wear. The Priory is in Tynemouth which is a coastal town also in Tyne and Wear. Just an observation.
Hi Alex, glad you both enjoyed our beautiful Northumberland. The next time you’re up, come and stay with us at Clennell Hall! The place is steeped in history and a perfect base for your adventures.
I may just take you up on that in the future! I feel like there were many things we missed as we only stayed for a week, so we're already planning to come back next summer!
I got bus from Glasgow on a £20 day return went to Bamburgh castle and up to holy island great day out best £20 spent on a day trip will be heading back down in the autumn
Brilliant summary of the top places. I’m visiting in May and they were already on my list. I will let you know if there’s any must do visits afterwards. Thank you for the video, it was very helpful, and your presentation was just right. Cheers Alex.
Newcastle is in Northumberland. You need to take another trip and visit Warkworth. Hexham Abbey Hexham and Morpeth. The Angel of the North is in Co. Durham.
Newcastle-upon-Tyne is in Tyne and Wear as is the Angel Of The North. Newcastle was in Northumberland till 1974 when Tyne and Wear was created. The Angel has never been in Northumberland, it was in County Durham till 1974 and is now in Tyne and Wear.
Cool video i live in Alnwick (but Morpeth is the county town) i find it is an amazing place for bike-rides if you come back climb the cheviot hills it is very fun
I wish I'd have spent more time in Alnwick as it looked amazing! We only stopped there for a couple of hours so couldn't see much there. I'll need visit again when I'm back in Northumberland
You need to go to see the Medieval Chillngham Castle about 70% of the items in the castle are original the real deal. I have a castle near me Langley castle and in my town we have a Abbey and has the very first jail in the U.K. with the old moot hall where they used to sentence the prisoners and witches.
i went to monk place in lindisfarm and its cool because once he tide comes in, the road is fully submerged in water its actual awesome and theres a story about somone * i forgot* but he chucked his beads into the ocean and you cfan even find some of his beads on the beach,
Too much focus on the coast. Inland there is just as much to see. Kielder Water, the Cheviot hills and loads more. More castles, more country houses. Another video needed
In fairness, he made a point of saying Newcastle and Angel weren’t in Northumberland. I’m from Northumberland and count those places as home- they’re close enough and definitely part of the North East as a whole.
England has 3 different types of counties, and they all exist simultaneously, meaning Newcastle is in both Northumberland, and Tyne & Wear at the same time.
Tyne and Wear thankfully does not exist as a county anymore it is only recognised as a postcode area for the post office plus I never have put it down as my county address I’ve always put Northumberland, I’m an immensely proud Northumbrian
Hello there. I like Northumberland and the people are very welcoming. But has soon as you mentioned Harry potter l don't want to know. I hate that far fetched crap.
What a load of rubbish!! Learn to pronounce the names of places if you are going to put yourself out as a "guide" to them. For starters learn to say Bamburgh, or any word ending in burgh. I hope you never do a video about any more of the numerous places elsewhere that end in burgh. Newcastle upon Tyne actually is in the geographical county of Northumberland. Local government administration has nothing to do with geographical location, and to claim the monstrosity of the Angel of the North is in Northumberland is an insult to those in the county of Durham who have to put up with it.
I was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. It will always be Northumberland for me. Great video btw, you just have to work on your pronounciation of Bamburgh.
Indeed, I'm hoping to head back to Northumberland soon to remake/improve/update this video, as it was one of the first that I made. I can't wait to see what more Northumberland has to offer!
I totally agree I was born in Newcastle and have always stated that I’m from Northumberland, we are one people and a made up county Tyne and Wear in 1974 will never Change that. I’m a very proud Northumbrian.
Warkworth Castle and hermitage is a must-see next time you can. The village below the castle is exquisite and has a river running all the way around it, like a fairytale village.
As an Alnwick born lad I say “well done bonny lad” cracking account of Northumberland’s best assets 👍

I’ve lived in Northumberland all my life, I’d recommend Wallington Hall and Belsay Hall/Castle for your next visit.
Thanks for the tip! I can't wait to head back to Northumberland and see some things we missed this time around!
You should have gone further north to Berwick-upon-Tweed. The most northern town in England, changed hands with the Scottish 13 and a full of History including the Elizabeth Walls
Indeed! There's so much I'm yet to see in Northumberland, I'm hoping to head back soon and I'll definitely check out your suggestion! Thanks
This is my number one place to go.

Yep, I've never heard of that one, I'll be sure to check it out on my next visit, sounds amazing!

Love your selection. Cragside is definitely one of my favourite places to visit. Barter books in Alnwick is great for cold, wet afternoons
Indeed, Cragside was gorgeous! and I wish I could have spent more time exploring Alnwick and Barter Books as there was so much to see, but we had a castle booking to get to to sadly had to rush through a bit
Enjoyed your video. Would so love to visit there.
Ah; but ya missed swimming with the seals! That would be a real treat :😊)
I have many happy memories of doing that in my teens !!
If ever in Alnwick i'd absolutely recommend Hulne Park 👍
The Northumberland 250 is on my list of road trips - so I appreciated this video, as it has given me food for thought.
I'm glad you found the video helpful! I definitely must head back to Northumberland, I imagine it's the perfect place for a road trip!
Very inspiring! I'm from The Netherlands and want to go cycling there.
Go to Keilder forest for cycling

Spot on observation .

I live in Northumberland and love the beauty and nature
Hi Alex, glad you both enjoyed our beautiful Northumberland. The next time you’re up, come and stay with us at Clennell Hall! The place is steeped in history and a perfect base for your adventures.

Beautiful castles great sharing 👌🙂
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Well there sure are many to choose from in Northumberland!

It's a beautiful part of England! and that's a great value day trip!
Not gonna mention the town of prudhoe and prudhoe castle
Great video - we’re going to Northumberland on Friday some really good tips.
Glad you found it helpful! Cragside and Lindisfarne were my personal highlights! Enjoy your trip!
Brilliant summary of the top places. I’m visiting in May and they were already on my list. I will let you know if there’s any must do visits afterwards. Thank you for the video, it was very helpful, and your presentation was just right. Cheers Alex.
Please do! Thank you for watching the video and enjoy your trip!
Thanks for this - Heading up in two weeks as on our list of places to relocate to from the South East. Looks incredible.
My home county....stunning.....
The scenery was absolutely stunning up there! ...and definitely enough castles to endlessly explore around!
Newcastle is in Northumberland. You need to take another trip and visit Warkworth. Hexham Abbey Hexham and Morpeth. The Angel of the North is in Co. Durham.

You’ll find many people still consider Newcastle to be in Northumberland we are all Northumbrians and a reorganisation in 1974 will never change that.
Absolutely and Bamburgh.
The tree has gone now, cut down by vandals. I'm a Northumberland lad, but emigrated to Australia, Northumberland holidays booked for 2025.
Looks like the area is ripe for exploring, definitely underestimated by the tourist trade. Great video Alex.
I agree! It was very unique for England because of how wild and uninhabited everything looked... and the abundance of castles always helps!
You need to go to see the Medieval Chillngham Castle about 70% of the items in the castle are original the real deal. I have a castle near me Langley castle and in my town we have a Abbey and has the very first jail in the U.K. with the old moot hall where they used to sentence the prisoners and witches.
Great video Alex. Love the detail and you've basically planned out my birthday trip in the camper! Thank you!!
Glad to help! and enjoy your trip! Northumberland certainly is a great place to explore for your birthday!
Excellent production and info Alex! We're going up there shortly and will be doing several of the places mentioned on your Vid. Cheers!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you found it helpful! Lindisfarne and Cragside are my personal favourites!

Stop it! Right now!!! It's a secret how beautiful this place is. Don't tell anybody. Shit you have, and me.... bugga.
Mind your language ...not needed .
Newcastle and the angel of the north aren’t in Northumberland mate
Smoke weed , drive a fast car , play video games 😊🤌🏻 how iv been living in the county all my life lmao
🙄
It's pronounced bam-burra or bam-braa
Great video but Bamburgh Castle is not called Bamber Castle. Also Newcastle and the Angel of the North are in Tyne and Wear, not Northumberland
In fairness, he made a point of saying Newcastle and Angel weren’t in Northumberland. I’m from Northumberland and count those places as home- they’re close enough and definitely part of the North East as a whole.

Hello there. I like Northumberland and the people are very welcoming. But has soon as you mentioned Harry potter l don't want to know. I hate that far fetched crap.
Number 9 and 10 aren't even in Northumberland good video other than that.

It sure is, that tree was iconic
You pronounced bamburgh wrong mate ,apart from that brilliant video, welcome to the real north of England
