Primitive Bow and Arrow for Survival in 1 DAY from nature with a KNIFE

- I made this powerful bow and arrows using only natural materials in less than a day. This skill might save your life some day. Bow is 51 inches long. The stave was cut from a white oak tree (Quercus alba) using a knife. Limbs were shaped, carved and tapered all with same knife, bow is wider at handle and narrows as it approaches tips. The handle is about 5 inches long about 1 inch by 1 inch in thickness. The string was made from 4 thin long continuous strips of pre-stretched animal rawhide. The strips were cut from a large hide by cutting all along the edge which produces long curled strips. I then stretched them until they were mostly straight and then put them in warm water to make pliable. I then twisted them all into one strong cordage, hung it with weight to stretch it even more while it dried. This produced a very strong bowstring of perfect diameter. Arrows were made from a variety of woods from poplar to redbud tree and were fletched with found wild turkey feathers. The feather was cut into sections to make better use of limited materials, no glue was used only animal sinew to bind them to shaft. Notch in one end for string and carved to a point on other. The point was fire hardened for only a short period of time, shafts were straightened with heat and held perfectly. I then took the bow out into the woods for field practice and at ranges from 5 20 yds could hit just about everything I shot at. The arrows with only fire hardened tips stuck in or blasted through stumps, with minimal damage to the arrows. The bow or bowstring has not showed any weakness even after several hundred shots. These if made properly can still shoot very fast. A short bow is easier to find straight clean material for including string, and straight shoots for arrows. A shorter bow is easier to pack and move through and hunt in thick cover. With a crown shape to the back of the bow, leaving the back alone and wide pyramid type limbs of a flat bow you are sure to have success. The whole process is a lot easier than you think I encourage all to give it a try. This skill is beneficial to all and will never let you down. This has to be the best video for survival bow making I've seen, your an excellent instructor and yes I will be buying your survival bow making course, thank you Sir...
Agreed
@Jeffery Franks 550 would be great, thanks for watching!
@@MeadLongbows what was it used for the string? Looked like paper but then string. Thanks, that bow is badass!!!
@@behindenemylines3467 thank you, and string is made from animal rawhide
@@MeadLongbows damn thats a really good knife
Nice one. No bullshit, no ego, no product marketing. Only what's important. Well done.
Sorry, I beleve it was all the above.

That’s the first time I’ve heard an arrow really make that whiz sound.
I heard it once, my target was shot so much a divit hollowed out. My arrow went in, curved up the divit and came back at me in a high arc. I thought once was a fluke. It happened again just in time for my mom to step out and tell me "that ain't happenin'". My answer was: "you are correct."
The proper term is called Kyudo btw
@@ant6687 the way of the bow
@@isaiahcampbell488 What's a divit?
No talking, just showing. Perfect vid. Just the right one to decide to get into archery by your morning coffee. Cheers.
As a carpenter and a African bush kid as a child now living in the U.K. that was so cool I am now going to make some for fun . My man so on target too Dam awesome !!
I’ve not made bows n arrows since I was 7-13 now I’m 42 this pops up and I’m hyped😊
First, especially given a handmade bow and arrows... that’s some excellent archery skills you demonstrated. And, I didn’t see one of your arrows wobble despite using branches you shaved straight and not have an arrow guide. This video is an extraordinary example of what can be done, well I should say, what has been done by earlier cultures to improve their lives. Very, very well done. Absolutely outstanding.
I have to watch this again and again and now, others too. I have a lot of wooded acreage and this is a project I have not considered.
Boy this was satisfying to watch!
You can say that again!

I've seen survival bow tutorials before but I've never seen a short greenwood bow before shoot like that. Especially not one made in the woods with just a knife.
Incredible stuff, very impressive
Thank you

And trick shots with the survival bow!??? Man, that’s awesome! I liked shooting from that leaning back position, in the one shot you’re unnoticeable until you pop up, seems very effective for hunting.
haha thanks man! you should try and make you one, its fun! There is a link in the description box under the video that has more details on the bow etc, enjoy!
Mead Longbows I’m still working on the journey of mastering the one you taught me to make at the Wilderness Weekend in GA. Got some dirt time in with it with Joel Graves and it was awesome, we shot all day and even got to hit some moving targets, had a blast! Now I can’t wait to get back into the woods and make and shoot one of these.
@@MrGlobalTransport awesome brother! I look forward to it!

This has to be the best survival bow I have ever seen on youtube. Not only is the bow well made but also the arrow speed is faster than any I have seen. Well done, good video and good build.
Thank you very much kind sir!
Very, very good. This guy knows what he's doing.......well done mate....!
You can tell this guy knows his stuff. Made it look effortless. Loved everything about this video. Perfect 💯
Of all of the green survival bow vids, this was the most satisfying to watch.
The sound of that last shot was great.
It's more precious when something is made from someone not manufacturer. Make mine beautiful Native Americans❤❤❤
Awesome video! Shocked at how well those arrows fly without a weighted tip
I absolutely love this video; so simple, effective, precise, raw and primal! It looks like you're doing a spot of instinct archery!? Legend!
I like learning quick builds on the run, cause, you don't always have a knife & axe! Thank you respectfully for showing a quick build.
By far one of the best bow tutorial, no unneccessary talking, not too long, just perfect, noice!!!
Very impressive! Thank you for the video!
It seems like we should not mess w this guy... awesome video and definitely a strong sense of craftsmanship being displayed! Thanks for sharing
Nice last name, u should make bows lol
Well done brother! The best videos on youtube have 0 words in it
Thanks! I'm here so my husband and I can show our boys. Boys scouts introduced them and they love it. Great skill for when we run out of ammo.
Excellent how-to video, thanks!
Good work. TU. It's all about patience and old frats like me have long since lost that.
Tried making a bow like this, and it turned out better then I thought. I used ash for mine and had a ton of fun.
You’re skills shine through your modesty.

Super cool project, man! Thanks for sharing.
the whizzing of that last arrow was so cool
Not only is that a really cool bow, he’s AMAZING at using it.
Finally a person with some real skills. Great video.
That last shot with the woosh of the arrow made the video.
Thanks.Quicker,faster,better, works.
Very nice making and shooting, i have in mind to try and make my own bow soon
Great job! Straight to the point.
Nice bow ,shoots great , the people with comments for got the skill set you have to pick the tree ,split the tree
carve a working bow .and know how to use it . it takes time to learn skill sets .it was a pleasure to watch you work
THANK YOU AND HAVE A GREAT DAY
Dave, greetings from Fort Lauderdale my man. Roughly what poundage and speed would you estimate you got out of it? Also, do you think a little fire heat might quick dry and enhance its performance, providing it doesn't check?
it was over 50 lbs and i did not speed test it but it would kill anything thats for sure. quick drying i would suggest days if not weeks later on to reduce the chance of checking. but you could always do it at the time of harvest and see..time of year and species of wood will dictate that to some degree. thanks man!
I love how you didnt sacrifice the good feathers for this build lol. Excellent video and very nice machete!
Thanks!
Not only functions amazing but also looks absolutely beautiful, great job! 👍
Awesome practical craftsmanship and shooting 👏👏👏👏👏
Sweet build!
Love how nothing was explained, truly a great video!
Super awesome. It’s cool to think that the same principle can be applied to seasoned staves in a long term wilderness survival situation.
Absolutely!
Beautiful! Simple, concise, and through!
Wonderful craftmanship from a master bow builder. His bamboo bows with siyahs are functional works of art. I'm saving up my pennies so I can buy one of his kits. Don't tell my wife as I own 27 bows (mostly primitive), to date. I would consider it an honour to add one of his bows to my collection. Can't praise this bowyer/archer enough. Keep up the majestic work, Dave. Your skill is much appreciated. Flaxen Saxon.
Getting good at shooting nice quick draws
wow, you just took me 35 years back in time to rabbit hunting in Dijon when I was a child!
step 1 make your bow, step 2 make your arrows, step 3 find lunch.
thank you so much!
sadly , bow hunting is now illegal in France.
Free men don't ask permission. Hello from across the waters! I hope you can get back out there and enjoy the way of life from your youth. Cheers.
@@Arcahnslight unfortunately the only way would be to get out of my country.
shame no country accepts penniless immigrants over 40
I enjoyed the conciseness of the video. I think it would have been nice to have a little narration during the construction of the bow.
"knife"
brings large machete lol
My excact thought xD
He is using crocodile dundee edged weapon standards
You could do the same things he did with a six inch blade and either a club or hammer stone
You mean small machete?
I mean, I wouldn't call my 19 inch Latin machete large.
Take a look at the sizes of these budget machetes.

That was a great film. Thankyou for sharing.
That thing has some power for a one day build!
Greatings from Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan. Absolutely 💯 good. I really like the kraftsmanship you know what you do. This is how our forefathers hunted with a bow like this. It saves you a lot money. Good job stay healthy with you family.
I promise myself that one day I will teach stuff like this to my kids, this is awesome
Thank you and please do 👊🙏
This guy is Del Toros character in The Hunted only with archery. I like it.
The Sound of the last Arrow was Amazing!!!
Great video, thanks 👍
A great educational video, and NO talking. When all the factories are closed after the zombie apocalypse and no ammunition to our beloved guns are produced anymore, bow-skills like this will be hard bought
Wow, was not expecting that level of effectiveness
Well done
That was just plain primitive awesomeness
Thank you for making this video. I've always wanted to make a bow and arrow like this. I live in NEW MEXICO .we have gamble oak new MEXICO Locust.and chockcherri.
I just seen this video and was blown away on your skills making and using a bow.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge bubba....that’s how to get-it-done
Love the video what did u use for bow string
rawhide
I really like the knife... I see it's a custom, but looks a lot like Condor's Parang machete. I have one, and love it. Thanks for making this video. I agree with your philosophy, and you're right about this skill possibly saving a person's life. It makes sense that all outdoors folks should know how to do this. Wishing you well, my friend. Very nice... thanki tuche... 👍👏👍👏👍👏
very impressive speed from greenwood. Do you use fire to dry the bow and harden it?
Short and sweet with a couple of nifty little tricks
Very impressive! Hope to own one of your bows someday
This was great. Awesome bow. My mind drifts toward sinew backing it.
36 thumbs down for what? The dud made a usable bow with arrows and string with a machete and scissors! Skill level 10 in craftsmanship and usage!
Because the string wasnt derived from nature is why i didn't like it
@@ruger51995 string is from nature, its rawhide cut into strips then soaked and twisted in cordage. The rawhide is from an animal I harvested. That bowstring from rawhide I made is still in service today so is the bow and arrows. Thanks for watching and try to read video descriptions sometimes as mine includes all the specifics of materials used
Thank you 👊
Fantastic video! Thank you for posting this...love the sound of the last shot.
Agreed! It sounded mean haha
Great job my friend. I wish you health and peace to your life. Love from Greece ❤️.
Great video, thank you for sharing your knowledge, God Bless You Good Sir
Greetings, I was wondering if I could persuade you to make a Japanese Yumi long bow please
Killer performance for what it was! I'm curious what type of wood it is and how it performs after aging.
white oak, and its still performing great - thank you!
You have an amazing talent❤❤
Very impressive, loved the arrow sound, can imagine guys below a castle they are attacking shouting 'incoming!'
That is one Hell of a Bow & One Amazing Bowyer. I watched the video 10 times. I going nuts at the moment. I have never owned a bow & have only shot a bow one time about 37 years ago in a high school gym class. Next Payday I am going to Buy Dave Mead's bow Class to make my first 2 Bows. A Bamboo Horse bow and a red oak bow. Sweet video Dave. Payday can't get here quick enough. This is very similar to the Bow that allowed the Mongolians to take control of most of the known World.
Thank you so much good luck let me know how you do after you take the online course your gonna love it!
That’s awesome. Great skill in the process of making it and using it!
Awesome job, love it! Curious as to if anyone knows what poundage this is pulling? looks pretty dang fast.
Feel inspired to make one. Thank you.
welcome and thank you! have fun
Beautiful work and impressive shooting thx 4 sharing
Verre Cool ! Vine maple is the best wood we have here for a greenwood bow. Great Stuff !!
The last throw was my favourite
I love how you did everything with just one knife. I'm going to try this with my Bowie knife the next time I go camping. I really enjoyed your workshop on Woody Island! Thanks again for all your advice!
Thx Neil, great to meet you man stay in touch
So i have a question, what did u use as the string for the bow?
Fantastic video! It shows a practical way to increase the odds greatly in your favor with few resources. Anyone interested in survival if caught away from your usual support habitat group etc, should commit this video to memory. I am not completely clear on how you made the string. And where did you get that awesome machete?
Wow 😳. You has made a very good hunting and defensive bow 🏹 better than other people has made with a lot more tools. Nicely done.
God bless america long live the Republic
Fantastic! Not a typical youtube "peacock" video! 👍
You'd be one guy who really could survive physically for a long time, if not your life, in a wilderness. What you are doing here is not only the hardest part to learn but the smartest. You put the horse before the cart. Making spoons, (bloody spoons) shelters and finding water is the easy part. You have the ability to take what you need to be comfortable and just disappear into the bush for long periods of time and come out fit and healthy. To me, you are a prime example of the "realistic survivor".
Thank you, been wanting to try this for years, gonna see how it goes this week. About damned time.
To make it look so simple .... you are a great bowmaker !!
Excellent and very interesting Dave
awesome. i need to do one or a few. probably from elm, my favorite bendy wood - pretty hard to break. just have to get myself a chopper first.
You are truly the master Brother! That is one fracking awesome survival bow! Looks like a fast shooter too!
Thanks brother!
truly awesome, thanks for sharing
🙏
Excellent man!! However myself personally would have used a wedge made from another piece to split the tree instead of the knife itself. Reduces the chance of your only tool breaking from using the knife to split the tree. 👍😀
Respect. Also, thanks for the audio samples 🎯🎧
That’s pretty good how he did it and the knife was great it’s a chopper for removing on the limbs and a good draw knife
Just awesome! Thank You Dave.
