Around the World in 54 Days and $10,000

- One of my all time favorite books is Jules Verne's Around The World In 80 Days. Today I wanted to look at the trip taken on this journey and see what it would look like to try the same trip today.
Ironically this video took me nearly 54 days to make.

That's nothing compared to the cruise from Tokyo to SF. You can count the number of those per *year* on one hand. The NYC to Dublin is a little better, but still a fairly space timeframe.

What, no recognition for Michael Palin actually doing this for the BBC in 1989?
All recognition goes to Nellie Bly for doing it and meeting Verne himself in London
@@AtlasPro1 True, but Palin did it in the modern era, which was more similar to your project in this video
Even so George Francis Train's 1870 world journey that was heavily publicized helped inspire 80 Days Around the World, so that would deserve some recognition too. It's all a bit of perspective who should recognize whom exactly. Also Palin was just a presenter, he didn't plan and research this trip by himself, so I would rather recognize the crew behind his project.

2:44 , the railroad your train takes on the map is the wrong one, the real Calais-Paris train go through the city of Amiens, which btw is the city where Jules Verne used to live and where you can visit his house which is now a museum
That's a fantastic level of ingenuity and originality haha
I love how you adhere (mostly) to the original novel :D
Btw there are some minor details that probably won't work in your route: (at least from what I've noticed)
- currently, no border crossing is open between China and India, so it's technically impossible to cross overland unless via a third country
- if you somehow managed to get to Lhasa, the fastest way to get to HK might be a train to Xining, which runs multiple times daily and takes around 20 hours, and from there, one or two HSR rides would take you to HK in about 15 hours. :D
Again, thanks for the amazing video!
Simon Xu I was about to comment the same thing about India China border crossing
Also if you plan this trip out better and make one of those cruises a repositioning cruise you could knock off a few thousand off the total.
Going through Bhutan would probably be best
Also the border with Saudi Arabia is not so friendly. Most of the countries around the world need not only a visa, but a invitation from the Arabian government so you can enter to the country. Today it is not impossible to get that, you can contact to an special authorized Travel Agency that somehow gets you the permits so you can make tourism around Saudi Arabia, but it is expensive and I am not so sure how difficult would it be to be able to take that ferry from Suez to Jeddah.
@@egormatuk3786 well the Bhutan-China border is closed as well 😂 In fact Bhutan is the only neighboring country of China that doesn't have diplomatic relationship with China

But you can take a eurostar ride from London to Paris directly so the whole 'train to boat to train' thing is kind of extra.
You can also get from Paris to Moscow and use the transiberian railway to get to Vladivostok and then Tokyo via ferry.
@@EmpireTVDragon He was following the route in the book.
he was following the book as closely as possible
@@Peggyt-jp6mt Yeah, so if you are taking Euro star you already break the rules. So you might as well do that
Crossing the Belarus-Russia border on land for non-Russians is currently legal gray zone. You technically shouldn't do that, but you might be able to get through. If you don't want to take the risk, take the Warsaw-Riga bus (or Warsaw-Kaunas on rail, then bus to Riga) and then the train to Moscow.
Ferries from Vladivostok to Japan go once a week, so you might have to spend a while in Japan waiting for your cruise to North America.
Cruises from Japan to North America go super rarely. AFAIK, the next one departures this May and it will get you to Vancouver, so plan your journey primarily with that leg in mind. If you're in Vancouver, take the bus to Seattle. Then cross the US on rail via Chicago (takes 3 days). From New York you can get to Southampton in 7 days, not counting waiting for the cruise. From there it should be pretty simple to reach London.
If we are departing from the original route so much, we might just as well skip Paris and go via Brussels instead. The Paris-Moscow express only goes once a week and you can board it in Berlin if you want. Or instead you could take the Warsaw-Moscow train, there should be at least one going every day.

The fastest route from Shanghai to Tokyo is via Korea. Take the 7-hour higher-speed train to Qingdao (or a couple hours further to Tianjin), then the 17-hour ferry to Incheon, South Korea (seems like there's a handful of operators running several times a week). Take the 2 1/2 hour high speed train from Incheon/Seoul to Busan. There are 3-4 fast hydrofoil ferries a day from Busan to Fukuoka taking just 3.5 hours or regular daily ferry taking 6 hours by day or a nightly overnight 12-hour ferry. It's then a further 5 hour high speed train to Tokyo. Or there's an overnight ferry 3x/week from Busan to Osaka, where it's 2.5 hours to Tokyo by high speed train. Either way, it's about a day shorter than the two days from Shanghai to Kobe plus 18 hours Kobe-Tokyo (although a bullet train is only 2.5 hours). Why was a bus and high speed train used to cross from Kolkata to Hong Kong to Shanghai, rather than trying to make a train or ferry route following the Southeast Asia coast, but not from Kobe to Tokyo. 🤔
Edit: Also, Cunard operates a regular transatlantic crossing from New York to Southampton taking just 6 days. There must be some sort of ferry from Southampton to Ireland.
And Princess Cruises has a couple 6-7 day cruises between Singapore and Hong Kong as well 6-7 day cruises between Hong Kong and Yokohama (Tokyo) including a stop in Shanghai (this is the route of the Diamond Princess that has been quarantined in Japan with numerous Covid-19 cases). There are round trip cruises from Singapore that include a stop in Phuket, but it doesn't seem like they could be booked from Phuket to Singapore. Getting from Kolkata to Phuket or Singapore could probably be done via a series of buses and trains through Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia.

"Unless you wanna try your luck sneaking onto a cargo ship"
Well you don't actually have to sneak, there are companies that offer travelling by cargo ship pretty much all around the world
Yes, this was my thought, too. I think you could replicate the original journey very closely by booking passage on freighters.
I think @AtlasPro mainly used the Rome To Rio app for his research, and freighters wouldn't be listed there.
There's a great game on Steam called "80 Days," which is based on the book allows you to decide which routes you take to get around the world in 80 days. It's really interesting and has a steam-punk twist to it!
Oh really? That’s interesting!
Welcome back, we missed you!
Trip Suggestion: The Silk Road!!
Just a fun story: I once took that ship from Brindisi to Patras and it was a disaster! The ship was slow, the cabins were far from comfortable and the water from the taps was literally yellow! In the middle of the night we passengers had to get out of our cabins and we were told that the ship had a breakdown and that therefore we should have disembarked much further north three hours earlier than expected. Bad and at a certain point even scary experience!
Love me some Atlas Pro in the morning.

What I don´t like very much about Verne´s route around the world, is that it just takes place in the Northern Hemisphere, and for this, it doesn't feel like a complete "Around the world" because you are surrounding the world in a much smaller circle than its real circumference, and I don´t think if for example you navigate around the North Pole you can say that you went around the world. Also in that route you don't even touch three continents (South America, Oceania and Sub Saharan Africa ). Because of this, I would say my best route to complete around the world be exactly the same of Verne until you arrive to Yokohama.
Instead of going through Alaska into San Francisco, I would rather choose the route that goes from Japan to Honolulu Hawaii, so you can say you were in Oceania. From Honolulu, you may continue your route to San Francisco, but instead of just crossing the United States, you would go all the way down to Los Angeles, then to San Diego and finally crossing the border to Tijuana. From there you can cross all Baja until getting to La Paz, and from there, getting a ferry to Mazatlán. You would cross Mexico (Passing through Guadalajara, Mexico City and Oaxaca) until you arrive to Chiapas, and from there you can cross to Guatemala arriving to Guatemala City.
It would be a really nice trip through the cities, jungles and beaches of Central America, crossing Honduras (San Pedro and Tegucigalpa), Nicaragua (Managua), Costa Rica (San José) and Panama (Panama City), until you arrive to the port of Turbo Colombia. From here the route continues to Medellín, and then all the way down to Quito, Ecuador, then from Quito to Perú, and once you are in Lima, it's just such a nice and interesting trip to Cuzco, near Machu Picchu. Once you are there, you enter to the Amazon and go to Puerto Maldonado, cross the international border and finally arrive to Río Branco Brasil. It' would be an adventure crossing the Amazon until you arrive to Manaos and then finally into the Atlantic Sea in Belén. From Belén to Sao Luis and from Sao Luis to Recife, you can finally take a ship from there to cross the Southern Atlantic to the Bissagos Islands in Guinea-Bissau, and there you can take another ship to the port of Dakar, Senegal. From Senegal you go to Nuakchot, Mauritania. Then you cross the Sahara desert through Argelia and Morocco until you arrive to Marrakech, Morocco, and continue your trip until you arrive to Tanger. There you cross the Strait of Gibraltar and arrive to Spain, traveling from Cadiz to Sevilla, then to Madrid, Bilbao and finally crossing into France. You arrive to Bordeaux, continue to Nantes and arrive to Saint Malo, where you can take a ferry to Jersey Island. Once you are in Jersey you can take another ship to Southampton, and from there, you just have to take another short train to finally arrive to London.
I know Verne was intending to make the trip the shortest as possible to fit into the possibilities of his time, but as the video has suggested, now the possibilities are bigger, even without plane, and I think a route like that would fit more into a more connected and fastest world as we have today, because you can make this trip and still making less than 80 days. I mean, come on, ¿Don´t you wanna see Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Amazon rainforest, the Sahara Desert and the African Savannah?
Maybe "visit every country in the world in 80 days" might be more interesting. Although that starts getting into politics of which place is or isn't considered its own country.
@@MorbidEel That would be a really good idea, but I am not sure it would be possible, even with a private airplane and freedom to move all around the world without delays. The smallest amount of countries that we can take on count is 193, that are all the members of the UN. If you tried to split that to fit into 80 days, you would have to visit about 5 countries every two days...It may be possible but if you are moving all the time and just land for a few moments on every country to put a step in the ground and then back to the airplane...but even then I'm not sure that there would be enough time.
Problem is it is practically impossible to cross the Panama Colombia border on land.
title should be renamed: what to do if you are rich and bored
This is amazing! Kudos to you and your research :)
2:00 i think there’s also some confusion between this book and the children’s book ‘The 21 Balloons” where the protagonist breaks Verne’s record partially traveling ballon (one of my favorite books growing up BTW)
10:20 takes slow ferry from Kobe to Tokyo
Shinkansen: bruh am I a joke to you?
He has to stick to the route from the book as faithfully as possible. No shinkansen in the book.
He only took alternative routes when the original is no longer around
If he just chose his own path without adhering to the book he'd be able to do it in less than 48 hours using flights.
@@zyill he would need three 12 hour flights.

9:07 “Take the bus directly to Nanchong.” *looks at route* “Yes, direct route.”
thank you for the info, this journey gonna be one of my goal in life now.
If the traveler and someone staying put each start a stopwatch timer together at the same time, then they should both read the same when you return (nobody is going relativistic speed after all). In the book, the time was not kept like this. It was adjusted for based on local time throughout the journey which is why they thought it was 80 days when really it was 79 days of travel time and 79 days since they left.
At 13:39, since the 54 days you calculated at 13:20 was based on total travel time and not based on local time zone additions like the book, the exact time for your trip would have passed in London: 54 days 16 hours 37 minutes. You should put a note correcting this since it confused me and made me have to waste an hour looking into this like I was the one who was missing something fundamental.
this is brilliant! I have to do it.
Suggestions:
- you can take a ferry from Athens to Krete and fly from there. Bit less flying.
- from Jeddah you can take a bus to Riyad and from there you can take a combination of buses and trains to reach Dubai and Sharjah. There you can catch a ferry to Iran through Hormuz and later reach India overland. Less accurate, but more fun :)
- India to China is a complicated topic visa-wise. I'd suggest India -> Myanmar -> Thailand -> Laos -> China -> Hongkong. Way longer timewise, but much smoother in terms of permits etc.
Thanks for this great video!

I would actually recommend the bullet train from Kobe to Yokohama. Even if you’re tired of trains, it will only take about 2-3 hours if you take nozomi and not 1070 min like the ferry. It’s also comfy and about the same price as the ferry.
