  • Welcome back, fellow pilgrims and adventure enthusiasts! Join us in the latest instalment of our Camino del Norte series, where we encountered unexpected challenges along the 18km stretch from Ziortza to Gernika. Little did we know that Gernika, the historic home of Picasso would present us with a unique twist in our pilgrimage - a town with no available accommodation!. NOTHING!!!
It's a common hurdle on the Camino de Santiago, and we'll guide you through our way to deal with such a situation. Please remember i have walked 5 Camino's without needing to do this
Facing the prospect of spending the night under the stars, we had to improvise. Join us as we recount our journey, decision-making process, and the unexpected turn of events that led us to jump on a train to Bilbo (Bilbao) - a decision that ultimately turned our predicament into an unexpected celebration.
Bilbo, with its vibrant atmosphere and rich history, became the backdrop for our 24th wedding anniversary celebration. We'll take you along as we explore the city and find a cozy hotel, turning an unforeseen challenge into a memorable milestone on our Camino.
Whether you're planning your own Camino de Santiago or simply enjoy vicarious adventures, this episode is packed with real-life experiences and valuable insights. Don't forget to hit the like button, subscribe for more Camino updates, and share your thoughts in the comments below.

    Important note and fact check
Pablo Picasso was not born in Gernika, he was born in Málaga, literally on the opposite end of the country. At no point in his life has Picasso ever lived in Gernika
Thanks to those who spotted this mistake

Pablo Picasso was not born in Gernika, he was born in Málaga, literally on the opposite end of the country. At no point in his life has Picasso ever lived in Gernika. And you don't want to sleep in Gernika anyway, one of the best albergues in Spain is just 5km further up the trail (Pozueta). And this isn't just me saying so, it is the highest rated accomodation on the Buen Camino app.

Thank you for this video.. will be walking the Norte this July and as a clergyman/pastor myself and am interested in staying at a monastery as often as possible.. you mentioned in this video the night before you stayed in a monastery.. if you care to share the name of the monastery and town you stayed in I'd be most grateful.. or a link online to contact them as well..

Hey have a great time - The MONASTERY OF ZENARRUZA is the place - as a pilgrim turning up you can't book a place inthe dorms - however you can ring and book a private room (expensive i think) - check out the video before this one (day 4 where i rush to get a bed) - thanks for watching and commenting - hope you enjoy the coming video's as well - PS be blessed as you connect with God on the camino and may He guide you steps and fill you with new joy and pease as he did with me

By the way, which programme or software do you use to make your videos? I'm thinking of putting my photos and videos from my Camino together into one video, possibly for UA-cam, but have no idea how to start!

I use a few - Capcut, Imoive, and final cut - the best for simple and fast editing is Imoive - very easy to use if you have never done any editing before - go for it and let me know when you post so i can enjoy your work

Picasso nació en Málaga era andaluz no vasco. EL cuadro del Guernica fue una inspiracion en Paris. Por el bombardeo.
Nadie ha pintado un cuadro por el bombardeo de Dresde, Alemania. 😢

thanks for your message - So, the first 7 days were done in April last year and then i had to leave the trail for work. We then came back in June and started the whole thing again from the start (so i got to walk the first week 2 times) April is a great time to walk - less people and we had great wether last year. - you will have a great time

as a pilgrim i have found the headphone really helpful for listening to the bible as i walk. The sound of nature is always wonderful however - blessing

@@TheGingerVicar-iu4mb the one you have to listen on the camino is yourself, and the nature ,obvios but headphones are dangerous cause you can't listen to an aproaching vehicle coming from behind or an animal triyng to bite you.

Wouldn't you have been better off just staying in a hotel rather taking a train back to Bilbao or were the hotels full as well? When and in which season did you do this walk? Thank you very much for the video.

thanks so much for watching the vlog - sadly for us the whole town was booked out other than we pay 100 euros for the night. Our hotel in the city cost us 45 euros and it was great. It was also our 24th wedding anniversary so my wife was stoked. It took some discipline to take the train back out to finish the walk the next day however. This walk took place over easter in April. We were able to do 2 more days and then had to head home for work but returned on the 1st June to the start with friends and walked all the way to Santiago - Next Vlog will be out tomorrow
