  • HVAC: LG MULTI V Refrigerant & Oil Acid Testing (Nu-Calgon Oil Test Kit/Qwik Check 2-Second QT2000) #jumpermantech #hvac
QwikCheck Acid Test Kit (2 Second Acid Test):
Detects inorganic acid in 2-seconds down to 1 part per million in HVAC/R systems. Fast, accurate, and easy to use, QwikCheck provides an early warning of acid problems. The Yellow to Red color change allows you to easily and clearly communicate the need for action to the equipment owner. Works with all refrigerants and oils. Meets EPA venting regulations. For use, simply insert the valve core depressor into the center of the suction-side, vapor-service/Schrader valve while system is operating.
The concentrate of acid in refrigeration oil is expressed as an acid number in mg of KOH per gram of oil (milligrams of potassium hydroxide per gram of oil). The acid number is a measure of the amount of hydroxide solution needed to neutralize the acid in the oil. The more acid there is in the oil, the more potassium hydroxide is needed to neutralize it and, so, the higher the acid number.
Nu-Calgon Phase III Acid Test Kit:
In the Phase III test, an acid number of 0.05 mg KOH per gram of oil has been set as the maximum acceptable acid concentration in mineral oil and alkylbenzene oil. In polyol esters, the number is generally accepted as 0.16 mg. Mineral and alkylbenzene oils with an acid number less than 0.05 mg or POE’s with an acid number less than 0.16 mg are acceptable and will cause no change in the color of the test kit’s acid indicator. However, if the respective oils have an acid number greater than these limits, it will cause the acid indicator to change from purple to pink or clear indicating that the oil is contaminated.

Hey Jumper man, I love watching your videos. I'm an LG startup tech and would like to share some info with you. Just so you know LG VRF systems can operate, on the low side, down to a low pressure of 43psi if outdoor temps are close to 5° F. Those low pressures can be normal IF other parameters are met. Like; High pressure trace in line with its high pressure target ,inverter discharge temperature in range, EEV's indoor and outdoor are in normal range (with good airflow across coils), compressors and fans operating in their range. I would advise getting an LGMV wifi module and download the free software from LG onto your laptop, that way you could see other things like oil sensors and thermistor info. Also, you can directly control ALL the IDU's, from your laptop, connected to the ODU on the roof. Let me know if you would like more info. I could send you a parameters chart. Thanks

Looks like you finally found out why they are failing. VRF can be rather hard to determine issues as they can be multi layered. Going back and trying to figure out if they were installed and commissioned right is very time consuming. I have experience with the Gen 5 LG VRF's we have a few problem sites my company installed. We kept losing compressors and no one could figure it out. Turns out airflow was never set on the ducted airhandlers and they specced high static units with large spiral duct. The additional charge for lineset lengths may not also be correct too. Our compressors were being nuked in heating these things really run hard and hot in heating mode.
Those indoor units look terrible and no doubt causing issues with the compressors.
I wish people would install the outdoor up on a platform like that around here and do all the piping out the bottom. They always pipe out the front and it makes it annoying to get the compressors out.

What i have seen when working on VRV. Is when you have flood back to the compressor, that liquid pushes your oil from the compressor. Meaning, with no oil you get extremely high discharge temps. Almost in all cases, we change the discharge thermister with every compressor changout along with the inverter board. If acidity is present, we always install a liquid line drier.
