    If the differences between the two lenses is bordering on zero, it proves that Cosina's quality control is excellent.

      Absolutely agree - they are virtually identical (except the close focus distance)

  • @albertsmith9315

    I own both in Nikon mount. The biggest limitation of the pancake version is the too long minimum focus distance. This is a function of the smaller barrel which does not allow the extension to get close. To be fair, Voightlander includes a small lens to put on the front to get closer but this is not convenient or practical in many situations.
    The newer, bigger lens has enough threaded extension in the barrel to allow good close up capability.
    Having both now, I ONLY use the newer larger lens for the ergonomics and close focusing.

      Yes, I also prefer the new version because of the advantages you've mentionend - also, the SL-IIs looks a little bit cooler IMHO.

      Can you use them with Nikon Zf? With or without adapter?

    Did you notice any difference between the lenses as far as the accuracy of the distance scale? It's always nice to have a reliable scale for zone focusing.

    Thanks Thomas! After I got the 28mm and 90mm versions of this series, I am so pleased with them that I am considering to go for the 40mm as well. However I was not sure which version would make better sense. Thanks to you it is nicely compared and I am convinced to go for the newer version due to the availability of 3D metering and EXIF data. I am sure that you could pixel peep some IQ difference between the two lenses, but that does not matter much to me.

    • @ThomasEisl.Photography
      @ThomasEisl.Photography  2 роки тому +1

      I have the 28mm as well and will do a test this year! (I'm also considering getting the 90mm)
      Great that you found liking to my video 📸
      Allow me just a quick remark - both lenses are equally compatible with 3d metering as both have the CPU chip - however, I am a 100% on board with your decision to get the newer one! It is such a beautiful lens.

      the compared lenses are identical, the only difference being the outer design and the closer focusing helicoid in the new one... I am surprised how someone could create a 16min long video on comparing 2 identical lenses :D

    • @zollieuncle9647
      @zollieuncle9647 2 роки тому +1

      @@Zlaja192 Well, it was more like a product review and in fact step-by-step pointed out there was no visible difference in the image quality of the two lenses. Other differences there are in MFD, form factor, weight, handling and retro design.

    • @Zlaja192

      @@zollieuncle9647 I know, yet its confusing to bring such a long comparison up, talking about two identical lenses. Folks that are indeed not familiar with these lenses will just get confused. There needs to be a quick and clear statement at the beginning, saying that these are optically identical lenses, as thats what matters the most.
      If someone goes ahead comparing them so thoroughly, it means that he himself is not briefed enough in order to produce videos about gear.
      Spoiler alert: the 28 and 58mm are also optically unchanged from their previous versions. But I am sure there is going to be a 30min long video about that ...

    can you also compare the current version of 28mm SLIIS vs SLIIN ? which version do you prefer ? New version focus extremely close , but also much bigger than the old one. I am considering buying which version for my nikon df and nikon F3, and I like small size lens balance well on camera and good ergonomics.

      The good news: I have the new 28. The bad news: I don't have the old one.
      However, I plan on doing a comparison of the new 28 with the latest Nikon 28 AiS.
      My current assessment: get the new 28 - it is an impressive lens. I love mine and you won't be disappointed. It is not that big, esp. w/o the hood.

    Is the one for 450 on eBay yours? :D
    I love the old pancake version. Got mine used from a dealer for 300 eur. What a steal. These are getting rare. It's perfect for my FM2. So small. But also very nice on the D810 or adapted to a Sony to get a more analog feel.

    • @ThomasEisl.Photography
      @ThomasEisl.Photography  2 роки тому +1

      🤭 no it is not mine, I've removed it from ebay, it is on a dedicated camera sales forum right now (trying to save fees haha). And yes, you are absolutely right - they are getting rare and expensive! Could not agree more regarding the analog feel 😌

    I bought the later version in late winter of 2021 - I'm very happy with it!
    I love the beautiful retro styling, the price was very reasonable for a quality article like this. This and a Samyang 35mm f1.4 have been used on the Nikon FM/FE/FM2n bodies and seem to register well. I won't be selling this Voigtlander 40mm f2 any time soon!
    Thanks for the review, very well put together!
