I'm a democrat from Oklahoma. I don't always see eye-to-eye with Senator Lankford, but I have a deep respect for him, and I appreciate him actually trying to work across the aisle to get things done. I feel he is actually trying to serve the public, instead of just trying to make a name for himself like so many other politicians. He is light years ahead of our other Oklahoma Senator in terms of character and substance. I am happy he represents Oklahoma with character and dignity.

Senator Lankford has voiced and/or voted for positions that I find indefensible. Still, we should give people credit for their good works. On the issue of border security, Senator Lankford has prioritized doing his job and solving problems for our country over personal political gain. That is commendable.

He's a really sweet talking guy, but he's just not consistent. He says that the Bible should be taught because of its cultural influence on Western culture and I agree with him. I live in a much less religious Europe and we learn some biblical texts in literature classes. But why is it necessary to prescribe the Bible by law? Why prescribe the Bible but not prescribe Homer or Shakespeare or Twain? He also dodged the question about the Ten Commandments in Lousiana. I do not believe him - he trampled over too many of his basic Christian principles to be taken genuine!

I love me some New York Times but these interviews sound like they are reading off a list of prepared questions and just moving on even if they hear something that clearly requires push back (they seem to do this with all the people they interview)...it's frustrating as hell.
[Edit] when they do push back, they are surface level, as if to intentionally NOT try to challenge their guest to not risk offending them or whatever...they don't owe them courtesy if they are contradicting themselves, you can push back without taking sides 🤦🏿‍♂️

Lankford has to step carefully, whenever possible, having taken great political risks by working across the aisle. As a Democrat in Oklahoma, I assure you that Lankford is head and shoulders above anyone who might replace him. I suspect he's going to have a fight on his hands in the 2026 Republican primary.

I cannot overstate how Mr. Lankford's faith and expression of his faith is not the problem with people my age (under 35). Was raised catholic, sunday school from 1st grade thru Confirmation but realized these people, for as much as they say it influences their life, have such a hard time practicing what they preach. It is so innauthentic and comes off as rehearsed and contains zero substance.
Cool, you can recite scripture and deliver a homily. Whats not cool is only cherry picking the parts you like and blatantly ignoring the parts you dont like or excusing others hatred for political points instead of condemning that hatred as you would for someone with a D in front of their name instead of an R.
Also, why do journalists not follow up their answers? For instance, is he cool with the Quran being taught? What about Buddhist symbols? Hindu teachings on posters in the classroom next to the 10 commandments? There are so many questions that so many interviewers just accept. Who cares if you ask 15 questions if they only give you 1 real answer out of all those questions?
I respect him as a man of fait and respect his faith and how hard his job is. Yeah, they make good money but it can be taxing when you... Actually do your job. I believe him when says he tries HIS hardest to work across the aisle in good faith. What I don't believe him is when he's willing to look in a mirror, at his party, and be honest with his constituents about his feelings regarding his parties ideology and demagoguery.

Lankford has been working across the aisle, attempting to get desperately needed legislation passed by Congress. Considering the state of affairs in Oklahoma politics, that takes considerable courage. He is genuinely at risk of losing in the 2026 primary. So, yes, he's treading carefully, even as Kamala is treading carefully now. What else would you expect? Do you really want to see Oklahoma elect another senator along the lines of Markwayne Mullin? 33:52 Lankford should know what a "A Tale of Two Cities" is; it is a novel by Charles Dickens, and the cities are Paris and London. Evangelicals have employed the phrase to refer to Babylon and Jerusalem, but they could just as well refer to any of the "two city" sets in the bible. While there is much literature in historical western civilization that references biblical themes, not every utterance can be reduced to bible glosses. Positing an arbitrary list in classrooms doesn't actually advance moral or cultural knowledge--as evidenced by Lankford's misattribution. Additionally, "Going Old Testament" on someone (his second example of cultural literacy) means to treat them extremely cruelly, harshly, and with wrath. Precisely what we don't want to raise our children to do.

I'm an okie and have pd close attn to lankfords political career from the very beginning... having been raised here in oklahoma, i know the ppl here as well as i know myself..
politics is a bloodsport around these parts.. state and city govt are deeply corrupt, and deadly serious on all levels-from the local dog catcher, all the way up the chain to the governors mansion.. and, idk how familiar the gen pop is with the world of "southern baptists," but taking hold of power and weilding it, is child's play to those ppl and they are not only corrupt, but absolutely ruthless.. and, oklahoma is one their stongholds-has been for generations.. and this man, lankford, cut his political teeth rising up thru that orginization.. and that says a lot bout who he is..
His intellectual abilities and emotional intelligence are of the highest order.. and so, I can confidently state, that there is zero chance lankford does not understand exactly who trump is, or is/was unaware of the nefariousness trump and his administration did/intend to attempt to do,if he is reelected.. I watched lankford live, on the senate floor Jan 6th.. watched him tip his hand-showed everything we needed to know about whose side hes playing for, by the direct actions he took.. act like he was just up there tryna rep his voters when he stepped up and attempted to aide his other coup members, to get vote scrapped and placed in the hands of the legislature instead.. effectively denying the 80 million voters who turned out during a deadly pandemic to cast their votes for the blue team at the top of the ticket.. I'll never forget it.. I was first, stunned, then deeply ashamed that my state put a man in office who would willfully ignore his oath cooperate with seditionists in an attempt to overthrow our govt..
Just something for ya'll to think about when yall see him, or hear him speak..

  • @differentdestiny

Wtf, you can understand, hear, and use common "biblical phrases" without having to read the bible itself. There is no reason that a religious needs to be mandated to understand ideas or references to the original body of work.
I like how people always ignore the first 2 commandments when talking about the posters. When the government demands you interact with a particular religion, learn a specific religious text, you're giving that religion, and only that religion, authority and special privileges. You're also inviting others to alienate people outside of that preferred belief and adding the opportunity to have theological fights. You're giving teachers room to openly proselytized to their students and tell them things like "all people are born fallen" and giving them space to tell their students things like if they have sex with multiple people they're like chewed bubblegum. Even more so when the government backs up this forced study of the religion with laws and policies based on the bible or that include biblical passages directly from the bible.
Someone's personal faith guiding their thoughts and actions is fine, but if you can't make a justifiable argument without having to rely on that personal faith, you are pushing those beliefs onto others and treading into theocracy.
There's also a not insignificant portion of our population that has is dealing with religious trauma and forcing people to interact with your faith could be harmful to them and disrupt their healing.

I teach the children of immigrants and some children who are immigrants themselves. It is heartbreaking 💔 to think about them or their parents being deported. I also teach some unaccompanied immigrant children. In my opinion, we need a solution that keeps families together and minimizes trauma to immigrants and their American citizen children.
I am also married to a man who came illegally, but got his green card from President Reagan before I met him. He came to this country to reunite with his parents who came here to make money to send back home to support their 4 children. They are not criminals and I wouldn’t have my wonderful son without my husbands’s choice to come to this country. What was a crime was when Hollywood High School illegally denied his right to enroll there because of his immigration status. We don’t know which people will grow up to solve climate change or find the cure for cancer. When we deprive people of an education, we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Here he has sacrificed his reputation among Trump supporters, on the stage of the Trump party, to do what he thinks is right and the fact that he gathered the support of so many people on the other side of the aisle at that expense is a testament to his integrity.

When anyone votes against their own bill that they worked hard on because a party member wants to be president they have put party over country and there's not much they can say after that to regain my respect. When any party votes in lockstep I mistrust that party.

What a weak interview. Why don’t American journalists push politicians? They’ll insult them behind their backs, but won’t call them out when face to face. She didn't once use follow-up questions to elicit a criticism of any Republican for their disgraceful behavior in killing the bill. She let him weedle out of it each time with his first mealy-mouthed answer.

@@healthdoc Those treaties should be canceled or redone, personally I think we should amend the constitution to allow the president to take in 10,000 refugees a year. Right now the system is being abused massively and the tax payer being taken advantage of. We can't take in everyone. Way too many. We all pay though the backdoor tax of inflation due to deficit spending on these "refugees". They also place pressure on housing and food costs.
