    I love love LOVE Crayola! Their colored pencils are great and terribly under-rated. Give me Crayola any day! Your tips and tricks with the tape are very appreciated and helpful. Thanks for the great ideas!

    1st things 1st, who doesn't love the smell of Crayola crayons?!? I started laughing when I heard you inhale the box opening, because that was the 1st thing I always did when opening them up. I remember that wonderful smell from my childhood! It is such a delight to watch you create art, even when using Crayola crayons and common household items. You definitely showed that you can take the proverbial sow's ear and turn it in to a silk purse! That's a great colored raspberry, especially being that it's crayons and construction paper. Thanks for showing what "can" be creatively achieved, without using artist grade supplies.

      Lol, I'm so glad you can relate! I felt like a weirdo sniffing them on camera, but I couldn't resist!! Thank you so much Cheryl, I'm glad you like my drawing! I really appreciate it!

      @@CautionArtistatPlay You're welcome and hey, I'm a crayon sniffer from wayyy back, lol! When I was growing up, all there was were crayons at the time. Crayola hadn't come out with their line of colored pencils or markers yet when I was a child, so their crayons were my favorite. They also had those big, chunky, fat crayons; I think they were called Jumbos. I don't know if they still make those now or not, but I liked them too.

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  2 роки тому +2

      I remember the jumbo crayons! I had some as a kid too! Incidentally they actually came out with scented crayons when I was a kid and I still remember the black one smelled like leather lol. I don't know if they make either of those anymore to be honest. So funny how many memories crayons can bring back!

      @@CautionArtistatPlay Yes, I remember the scented crayons! I had bought some some for my niece and it seemed like there was a Blueberry scent in there that I liked sniffing, lol! Thanks for bringing back such great memories of Crayola. I may have to pick up a box at Walmart for nostalgic reasons...and to smell that scent again, lol! :)

    Thanks for the tape trick! Beauty in simplicity.
    My favorite from Crayola is still their crayons. I have so many of their products, but I never stopped coloring, even through high school and college. It was my secret hobby back then. I have quite the collection including many discontinued crayons. I also really like their colored pencils. I really appreciate the colors of the world line in so many of their products now too.

    Great job!
    Using a different paper would give you an even better piece! For example, a lightly sanded pastel paper or a rough watercolor paper. You could also try using a ground that has a bit of grit in it. Lastly, painting a few layers and then scraping in one clean sweep the top layers of crayon. So you're left with a flat layer of mixed colors without all of the built up wax.
    Happy painting!

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Denise! Yes, these would definitely work better on nicer paper, I tried a few swatches on Mi-Teintes and they looked great! I'm sure the sanded paper works wonderfully as well! I enjoyed the challenge of using the construction paper though and it added to the fun for me. I have seen the scraping method, but I noticed that while it gets rid of the grainy texture, it often leaves the colors looking more muted and one of my favorite things about crayons is their vibrancy, so I decided against using that technique this time. Thank you for watching!!

      @@CautionArtistatPlay oh, okay! I was just suggesting🙂 I used to create portraits with colored pencils and with pastels (soft). Not together, though. I think you do a great job with mixed media! I'm a purist, I recently found out and I can't make myself mix my media, lol! I tried.....I just can't 🥴 For the last 8 years I've been a silk artist. I paint on silk with dyes, but you can paint on silk (or cotton, etc) with Inktense. Have you tried that yet?
      Anyway, thanks for your reply😃

    • @CautionArtistatPlay
      @CautionArtistatPlay  2 роки тому +1

      I know what you mean. In the past I have been a purist too, I have always liked to use a variety of supplies, just not usually in the same piece. I have been overcoming that over the past few years and it's quite liberating! I have heard great things about Inktense on fabric but haven't tried it myself yet! I really need to!

    I found the key to blending Crayola crayons was heat. I had a miserable experience trying to blend or dissolve them with spirits and chemicals. My first experiment was on a piece of cardboard paper. I put my portable electric radiator to full heat and laid the area of paper that I wanted to work on for a few minutes until it was hot. After that the crayons act like paint sticks on the surface and melt like butter, and blend like oils. The final results are something that resembles an oil painting with very bold colours. Problem was though that the paraffin soaked all the way through the paper. My second try was a success as it was done on primed canvas sheet, where nothing soaked through. I use q-tips to blend.
    Downsides are that its not the safest method, you can only work on one layer, and small details are hard. You could put an extra scrap piece of canvas sheet on the radiator as a detail work palette and melt a few colours, then paint the detail with a small detail brush. But you have to be very quick on the draw. Colour mixing can only be done on the fly, but shouldn't be an issue due to the large amount of colours you get. You'd need a lot of white though. As for light-fastness, I'm not certain, but I gave my cousin my first experimental still life (made in 2011) as a gift 2 years ago, and it still looks as vibrant today 11 years later.

      That's very interesting, thank you for sharing! Heat had crossed my mind, but I couldn't figure out how to do it with what I have on hand, so I decided to just stick with the alcohol. I did this piece over the span of a couple days (just because I had a lot going on at the time) and one of the days was warmer and they laid down a lot better that day.
      It's good to hear about your older work not fading!

      Thank you Anastasia! Honestly, I recommend the Canson Mi Teintes paper, it's for pastels, it comes in different colors but you can get in in white too. Lol, Yeah their watercolors are interesting! I love the neocolor 2, they are so much fun to work with. I have had those for years and just recently tried the neocolor 1. Both great products! Scotch tape does work more easily for this trick, that's what I learned to use with my colored pencils, though I don't use it anymore because it's not acid free and I don't want to risk the adhesive leaving any residue and causing archival issues down the line. I wasn't worried about that with this so much though, I used the tape I did because I had it near by and didn't feel like trying to find my scotch tape! Lol.
