I think they did a good job porting it but some of these scenes are absolutely a testament about how badly Nintendo's hardware needs to be updated at this point
This.
Hopefully if the Switch 2 is as fast as the rumors suggest, fingers crossed that it gets a graphics upgrade in the future

Ports like these are always so fascinating to me, to see all the cut-backs necessary to get a game like this to run on under-powered hardware.
Always impressive when a developer manages to pull it off.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one! It really is fascinating to see what they had to do to make it run smoothly. Sonic Frontiers is another great one to compare

The fact that they were able to port Hogwart's Legacy onto a Switch is amazing!
The graphics are CLEARLY not the same, but I cannot complain. It really looks great!
They didn't though did they. They downgraded the hell out of it to the point it's not really the same game
They should have made this port a version of its own for the switch.
I mean they should have remade this game back from square one to repolish the assets they use so they can well optimize and integrate the system on weaker hardware.
@@brianlaudrupchannelit literally is the same game just downgraded graphics. I remember when I was younger they would make different versions of the same game for GBA, DS, and Consoles. My family could never afford the consoles so I would always be disappointed how my DS version was not as cool as the PS3 version. I can imagine it's cool for younger generations now to be able to play the same game you can on PS5 just with scaled back visuals instead of them making a side scroller hogwarts legacy.
@@kraftp no they even turned it from an open world game to a non open world game
yeah the grafiks are miles away, but so is the power of the 2 consoles :D
Wow it’s crazy seeing them next to each other. It looks like they really took their time and manually gutted the game rather than just scaling it down into oblivion.
Eh, looks like they tried doing it manually but halfway through they couldn’t be asked and just scaled it down.

They did a demake for PS2 and that is the version of switch
RDR1 is amazing too, and it uses same G engine that RDR2, gta 5 etc, obiously not the gta 5 version up to date graphic, a previous one, I remember when people laughed when N said rdr2 cold have been into switch but never happened cuz lack of time or some crap, of course could have been ported, worst case ps3 version but it can handle a close to ps4 version. When looking the comparison of this game, ps5 lake water seems real and switch is 3 or 4 leagues down, trees too, but castle looking, cliffs, and lot of shit I don't feel ps5 is better just different looking since it is not real space they are what they call mipmaps, little textures and you can make it look as you want ( up to a point obviously ).
Ps5 is better just cuz joy cons never got fixed, incredible, but there are usb controllers that make switch the device it should have been, stable and ver similar to steam deck. Fucking hybrid shit ^^... no matter, tinfoil and n3ds full of exclusives for 3 lives.
They really put a lot of passion to getting this software up and running. This is more than I expected. They made a lot of sacrifices but they got it to work as promised
4:05 Can you say that after THIS ?!
@@danielcastaneda4975Yes, it's fine.
If it were a PS3/360/Wii U game, (which is closer to what the Switch is) no one would be complaining.

Yeah and at 14:45 no way the switch version looks that sharp 🤣🤣
Just remember male=ps5 female=ns that's it!
Honestly I expected it to be way blurrier than this. It does remind me of Prisoner of Azkaban on the PS2/Gamecube at times though 😅
Damn, that game was quite messy on GameCube for some reason, even though this console had more power than PS2. Guess it's all thanks to mini-DVD
What? The graphics are much better than the ps3 game Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood prince, just google prisioner of Azkaban game and see how dated that game is
Its always so interesting to see what needs to happen to make games run on lower hardware. From a graphics perspective, hogwarts will pass if its the first version youve played and know what to expect from a switch. But from making the game run, its really cool to see the difference, but all the while still being the same game.
True. In the past ports sometimes changed the whole game structure/scenario. This is a 1:1 recreation in a much weak hardware. We have come a long way.
What is a good job about this? Absolute puritan display, no optimization and no visual design. A game released a long time ago on inferior hardware, it was designed to look good on it as well. Harry Potter, released on ps3/xbox360, looks better than this. Better geometry, higher resolution, more detailed textures.
@robertkurta559 a good job is somehow seeing this massive game on a tiny little console with specs that were decent in 2015. Like... I don't think you realize how nutty it is to have a game that needs 12gb of ram minimum run on a console that has 4 and only 3 of them dedicated to gaming. That's super cool and I hope some developers speak about how they did it.
@@CognizantZen saying there's no optimization is crazy.

Yeah it’s pretty impressive but you can really see the difference in graphics with the water seems to me the devs got lazy there I mean there are some switch games with some great looking water

I’m playing this game on my series x for the first time right now and it’s blowing me away. Oooof for the lake water, but overall an impresive port. This guys actually managed to cram a next gen game into a 6 years old tablet. Props to them.
I guess that it's still a better option to play the next gen version, but if you only have a Switch and want to try the game, the port is a good buy.
It's not impressive, any game can be ported to switch, the problem will always be that they have to lower the graphics a lot depending on the game and the graphic style it has It will make it look bad or medium good even in very low graphics and by the way the optimization, which they do but of course they have limits due to the hardware
@@zadkielgd5137which is impressive

@@OrRainoBecause... that's a PS3 game. This is a PS5 game. Some assets are so baked into the game that to turn it into a Switch game you will have to completely redo it. To save time and money you are better off, tuning things down to super low and optimising what you can.
Honestly, it's very good, for a game the size of Hogwarts legacy, I confess that I'm very surprised

As far as speed goes we have, eMMC < SD card < HDD < Flash storage < SSD < M.2
So it's no wonder it takes so long.
Hopefully Nintendo give the next system an SSD at least.
09:10 Castle layout in Switch has been changed to include a tunnel-enclosed space and towers in the background removed. Weird choice
It’s rendering less polygons to help boost performance. Given the hardware they’re working with, it’s an interesting way to tackle the problem
Looking closely you can only see minor changes to architecture, apart from that big change you mentioned lol
Weird choice? They did their best optimising the game for a trash console.
The tunnel-enclosed space was originally used in the PS4/Xbox version actually. not sure about the missing towers tho

The colors look so dull, it's almost depressing. Static lightning would've improved the visual quality so much, but instead they went the easy route and just turned off everything that eats performance. Just compare it to Witcher 3, it's like day and night.
The Witcher 3 is a different generation game.
Isn't Witcher 3 a PS4 game? Hogwarts legacy looks a lot better than Witcher 3.
@@user-hq6kn5vp2q Sure, on PS5. But on the Switch, Witcher 3 looks way better imo.
It's not even the graphical fidelity, but the brightness and colors alone. Hogwarts Legacy on Switch just looks... dull. As if they forgot to increase the base brightness to compensate for the missing dynamic lighting.
I actually really like the Switch port. It reminds me of the games I used to play as a little kid. Back when videogames truly felt like videogames, and nobody worried about how realistic they could possibly get before wrecking the hardware.
This story that "nobody cared about realism" is pure imagination of yours, I remember very well at the time of the PS2 how much people were always talking about how realistic the graphics of game X were, or how detailed the graphics of game Y were and etc... people have always paid attention to graphics in all generations of consoles.
@@matheusreiss2 I grew up with Nintendo consoles and it was a completely different community. Nobody was looking for said things with the Wii, Nintendo DS, or 3DS. I use the term “nobody” very lightly though. I don’t mean that LITERALLY NOBODY AT ALL WHASTOEVER was looking for said aspects in their games.
With this mindset developers won't care anymore
@@VSN-wb2lynot true at all. art can be beautiful and high quality without always aiming for realism. if photorealism is every developer's goal then all games will end up looking the same.

I’m quite excited for a new Nintendo console, the Zelda games will be amazing
Stay competitive? It’s the highest selling console out of Gen9 and 10
Good graphics do not mean a winning console

The switch version reminds me of the OG Harry Potter games on PS2. I’m mighty impressed they were able to do something like this, but I think that the Switch version should only be played if a switch is your only option. 😬
Yeah I agree really shows with the water effects very poor lighting on the switch version
It's like looking at a prequel vs a sequel, but credit to the team for releasing a playable version on switch, I'm sure if they released it when they were supposed to, it would have been another cyberpunk incident.
I kinda enjoy more the grim/darker light tone the switch version has lol
I would say it is one of the best pors I have seen on Nintendo switch
The simple fact of being able to make a port like this is already a feat
It's clear that Sony is doing a wonderful job and Nintendo needs to update their hardware but I'm impressed that they could port the game to Switch users.
Nintendo is always going to release gaming systems that lag far behind the others. Their business model is to make massive profit on the hardware. It's why the Switch is still the same price as what they've sold it since launch and why the games never get discounted. Their cult fan base settles for technological mediocrity because the games they play will never demand modern processing power.

Switch hands down a more powerful console no cap

If this was most other Switch ports, all you would need is Mr. Jameson's laugh or the 66p patrick dancing to Soulja Boy meme.
This is an impressive porting job!!! Avalanche dedicated the year to making this game run on the Switch, and they made it work and made it playable!!
It isnt the prettiest experience, but I am so amazed I may pick up the Switch version just to support the work the team devoted!
I really have to say I expected this game to get a cloud version for the switch because I didn't think they made it runable on the switch, so I am kinda suprised by how it runs and looks, I mean its not looking great but I really didn't expected it to get anything besides a cloud version

The fact that you can play this portable now is awesome.
Huh? You’ve been able to play this portably for quite some time
Same argument every time a horrible port comes out for Nintendo Switch: "It can be played on portable, that's a win" LOL
A lot of issues I've noticed on the switch could be fixed with time.
1:57 + 3:54 - The water fidelity could be increased by rendering more defined ripples in smaller bodies of water and in closer proximity towards the player.
3:56 - The tree on the left just needs to be remodeled.
6:26 - They could replace the texture for the tree buildboards since the ine theyre using has a black outline.
9:07 - I think this was intentional, but a lower poly count model can be used instead of completely removing a part of the castle.
9:33 - It seems like instancing isnt working as well so they could just use billboards for the farthest candles and switch them for instanced candles when extremely upclose.
12:39 - the pop-in is really noticable specifically with the trees shown in this part of the video. The best option is to have closer trees switch models off-screen and when the player gets really close and can only see the trees. bark. If the player continuously looks at the same tree and looks at its leaves as they're running towards it. I would find a way to gradually transition the textures.
15:25 - weird glitch
It seems like the devs had a deadline to reach, which I understand.
14:47 - Something I noticed: The PS5 has weird artifacting/aliasing on the tail of the dragon.
I think the last one was just an editing error. The poster accidentally switched PS5 and Switch labels. My apologies.

14:46 I think that they are the wrong way around
Great video though, getting this on switch and a great side to side comparison
Yeah must be no way the switch version looks that sharp
After watching this video I'm quite sure that Nintendo would port GTA 5 to Switch if they wanted to
ps3 runs gtav, and switch is like 2x more powerful, so yes, they can do it
@@solidsnivy5639Probably because of GTA Online. It's huge, I wonder if the Switch and Nintendo's online can handle it.
Wow at 1:05 the Graphics of Ps5 and switch changed🤣. No Problem dude.
Was a nice Video and thanks for Upload .
When seeing the Nintendo switch version it gave me ps3/Xbox 360 Harry Potter vibes from this
crazy some parts look better on the switch, i think its due to how they change the style to cover the limitations like they did in the old days, the dark lighting makes it feel like a dark fantasy game which actually fits the HP franchise well
Better? you must be joking 🤣🤣
The cope is real
I’m not expecting much graphics wise, still could be better in some cases and it’s good that more people can play it. But you can’t be asking 60€ for this…
It's not just the graphics that're different. The dialogue is different in some spots as well.
9:07 Wait is Hogwarts castle actually smaller in the Switch version or is the Switch’s culling just that bad?
The Switch version really shows how busy the visuals are on PS5. Developers have gone all-in on throwing as much detail and effects at you as possible without really considering the visual readability you have when you're actually playing the game. I wonder if the gaming industry will ever get over this obsession with attaining photorealism and realize simpler easy to read visuals are actually better for gameplay.
Agreed!! I actuality remembered an argument over the Crash N-Sane Trilogy port for the Nintendo Switch, "One looks like Cheetos Puffs, and the other looks like Crunchy Cheetos" Where I said, "Yup and the Crunchy ones are the best!!" It's not surprising how many people agreed with that.
Wow, just wow. They better not be selling this full price.
Why not? They did a lot of work to make it work on the Switch. They basically made the game from cratch again just for switch owners.
Yeah but it kinda falls short compared to what others get for their money. So selling it for 50$ would be fine instead of 70$ like the PS5 version costs.
Edit: and it wasn't made from scratch, it's mostly de-make to fit the power of the switch graphic wise.
@@CDumkeThis is mostly aimed for the people who only have a Switch as a mean of playing this game, so the price tag won't matter much. The same thing happened with the RDR1 port from Rockstar, they charged $50 and it sold wonders on the Switch.
The difference is astronomical. Bigger than the pre release material suggested. Which was all carefully selected and none of it was open world stuff.
This reminds me of when new games used to get launched in the Nintendo DS. The difference is that in the of Switch they have the exact same gameplay
Nintendo is so magic, the Switch offers new game with a bonus of last gen systems nostalgia inside. ❤
I don't know if I'd romanticize having to dull the visual integrity of the game's water from looking vibrant and detailed to a low poly blurry plane moving up and down as "last gen system nostalgia".
Seriously, lol. It's like everyone in the comments is on acid, this is the worst looking game release in probably the past 15 years on any platform@@damir_van_kalaz
i think it's a good port, due the limitations of switch, in portable mode maybe this low graphics don't make such difference!!!
The first clip omg swear I though I was staring at the old scooby doo games for ps2
Do they change the tag name on the corner here? xD 14:40
it looks good on switch considering its limitations. i don't have a PS5 so I'll be pleased to play it on Switch.... not like mortal kombat 1
Its like original vs remastered comparison
more like remake
I remember when the comparison videos between Nintendo and the others made me like, "There ain't no way I'm playing that on Nintendo." But where we are now with graphical power, its really not that bad.
I am just amazed this is on the Switch at all. The fact that it is and looks as good as it does is really shocking.
For those who can’t afford all the consoles and chose the Switch as their one and only console, it’s not bad. I played it on PC when it first came out but some friends only have a Switch. The game is so good that I’m encouraging them to get the game.
I thought for a second that was some prank from lowspecgamer or "running below very low specs". Damn.
Seems to different games, no doubt that was a huge work create this port
Even the frame rate is decent on the switch.
XD
2:24 Wtf the water looking so much better on the swithc wow xD
All things considered, I was pleasantly surprised with this. After seeing that awful attempt to bring MK1 to the Switch, I expected it to look hideous but it’s definitely passable for the hardware they’re working with.
omg they even needed to add something for the bridges at hogwarts so you cant land on them because hogwarts has to be loaded seperatly, i mean cool that they did that to make it playable but at the same time it changes even interiors and the outside then what you get on the next gen consoles. i hope that the switch 2 wont be a dissapointment and will support better graphics.
It's like a whole other game. The difference is immense.
Yeah, but it's pretty impressive for the switch to even run it tbh
