Its always so interesting to see what needs to happen to make games run on lower hardware. From a graphics perspective, hogwarts will pass if its the first version youve played and know what to expect from a switch. But from making the game run, its really cool to see the difference, but all the while still being the same game.
True. In the past ports sometimes changed the whole game structure/scenario. This is a 1:1 recreation in a much weak hardware. We have come a long way.
What is a good job about this? Absolute puritan display, no optimization and no visual design. A game released a long time ago on inferior hardware, it was designed to look good on it as well. Harry Potter, released on ps3/xbox360, looks better than this. Better geometry, higher resolution, more detailed textures.
@robertkurta559 a good job is somehow seeing this massive game on a tiny little console with specs that were decent in 2015. Like... I don't think you realize how nutty it is to have a game that needs 12gb of ram minimum run on a console that has 4 and only 3 of them dedicated to gaming. That's super cool and I hope some developers speak about how they did it.
@lucascamelo3079 yeah, going back to the wii and ps2 versions of 0s3 and 360 games. We have come so far from porting down and making entirely new versions
What? The graphics are much better than the ps3 game Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood prince, just google prisioner of Azkaban game and see how dated that game is
I actually really like the Switch port. It reminds me of the games I used to play as a little kid. Back when videogames truly felt like videogames, and nobody worried about how realistic they could possibly get before wrecking the hardware.
This story that "nobody cared about realism" is pure imagination of yours, I remember very well at the time of the PS2 how much people were always talking about how realistic the graphics of game X were, or how detailed the graphics of game Y were and etc... people have always paid attention to graphics in all generations of consoles.

The biggest difference is in the details in the open world setting where there is a lot of vegetation and trees, other than that, I didn't think it was that bad, although the difference is clear, but we have to take into account the hardware of both, it is an incredible feat to run in this quality on the Switch

It's not impressive, any game can be ported to switch, the problem will always be that they have to lower the graphics a lot depending on the game and the graphic style it has It will make it look bad or medium good even in very low graphics and by the way the optimization, which they do but of course they have limits due to the hardware
90% the main important assets still seem to be there, it’s just some little things were removed or changed. Interiors almost look the exact same between versions though.
@@OrRainoBecause... that's a PS3 game. This is a PS5 game. Some assets are so baked into the game that to turn it into a Switch game you will have to completely redo it. To save time and money you are better off, tuning things down to super low and optimising what you can.

I wasn't really expecting to like the game much, but after a couple of hours I was really enjoying it.

I mean, of COURSE the PS5 will look far better, but IF you only have a Switch, it seems like you'd at least get more or less a similar - albeit less visually stunning (the lower candle count at 9:53 really makes it obvious what had to be sacrificed to make this work on Switch) Hogwarts experience. If you never SAW the PS5 version next to it, I'm sure you'd be perfectly happy with it. As someone with a Switch and PS5, though, the choice is obvious. Still, it's impressive that they managed to make ANY serviceable version work on Switch, given the scale of it.
i think theres no other open world game in switch that look as good as this for an old portable hardware its well made, and i know we older gamers feel kinda nostalgic with the style i would love to try it out
Yeah but it kinda falls short compared to what others get for their money. So selling it for 50$ would be fine instead of 70$ like the PS5 version costs. Edit: and it wasn't made from scratch, it's mostly de-make to fit the power of the switch graphic wise.
@@CDumkeThis is mostly aimed for the people who only have a Switch as a mean of playing this game, so the price tag won't matter much. The same thing happened with the RDR1 port from Rockstar, they charged $50 and it sold wonders on the Switch.
I have a 5800x/ 7900 XTX Nitro PC and PS5 (as well as a Switch OLED I rarely play), and I have to admit I'm fascinated with some of these Switch ports. How does a game that's tough to run on PC get cut down to a form that actually runs on a Switch? It must be incredibly difficult.
The Switch Version kinda reminds me of the game we would wish for in the ps2 era or Nintendo DS era of Harry Potter Games. However, it lacks the charm of the HP characters and story.
omg they even needed to add something for the bridges at hogwarts so you cant land on them because hogwarts has to be loaded seperatly, i mean cool that they did that to make it playable but at the same time it changes even interiors and the outside then what you get on the next gen consoles. i hope that the switch 2 wont be a dissapointment and will support better graphics.
When the Switch 2 arrives and you'll will see that it is not as powerful as a PS5 everyone will start saying "And that's why we need the Switch 3" and so on.
The switch has produced far better ports even with its limitations, even Red Dead Redemption from ps3 looks waaaaayyyyyy better and graphically it is quite similiar to the Legacy port, but it has gorgeous sunsets and nice sharp clean visuals. Main issues I have are the lack of any kind of dynamic lighting which would have greatly improved the texture details, they could have increased the contrast also to hide alot of the messy looking textures too, and the draw distance being so foggy is a huge eyesore, looks like Silent Hill 1 on ps1 lol. Will I buy the switch port? Yes, because performance wise I will agree it looks like it's running well and I'd love to play the game on the go, but I think they could have done a better job and I hope some patches come out down the road like GTA trilogy and Witcher 3 that can improve the graphics. The switch is more than capable of handling way better graphics, just look at Doom! Easily outperforms this visually and gameplay speed. I'm definitely holding on to my ps4 copy of it lol
Most PS3 era games ported to Switch will look better than this. They get to keep sharp textures and consistently higher resolutions. The problem here is that poor image quality ruins what would otherwise be an artistically stunning game. So, older games get to preserve their visual identity or even enhance it.
It's also a completely different engine. The standard of the Unreal 4 engine is much higher. The port is very good. Especially when you see how terribly Mortal Kombat 1 was realised.
Going to follow up and say I picked up the game today and I am actually more impressed with it than what footage on UA-cam has shown. Reduce the brightness a bit to improve the contrast like I was suggesting and man, while it’s still a shadow of it’s next gen self and not the best port I’ve played to date, it’s still very very impressive and holds its own :)
They already did that test in an article. Needless to say, it wasn't good--much like this comparison. That's exactly why the switch 2 (if and when it comes) will not be getting GTA 6. But yes, they plan to port GTA 5 to the switch in the future...to most likely their successor. Just, it will look and perform weaker than a ps4 pro by comparison and it has been stated, cost near or same as when the original PS5 came out.
@@wertydeluxe1405 uhhh, no! the switch have more modern cpu and gpu architecture compared to the ps3, the portable is not powerful to today standards, but it's better than the ps3. you can try to google it and confirm this The metric of GFlops is higher in whatever they measured the Cell computing, but does that actually matter for the overall performance? The Switch is better at the things that make it run games well, which is mostly GPU power for any recent game. Even if the memory bandwidth is comparable, having 16 times more and the GPU power to put it all to work more effectively is a huge advantage for gaming. Ultimately the CELL wasn't a great pick for a gaming system, but it was incredible technology for 2006. It was hard to program for and just generally weird, but man I love it. I wish consumer hardware would get weird again.
No, more like PS3. There is still a decent amount of detail and the movements are fluid overall. A lot of characters in PS2 games had stiff and rigid movements.
@@Photo0021I grew up with a PS2, and in my experience most of the time someone says this they’re right on the money. But I agree with you here. I’d say this is closer to an early PS3 game visually.
The Switch version really shows how busy the visuals are on PS5. Developers have gone all-in on throwing as much detail and effects at you as possible without really considering the visual readability you have when you're actually playing the game. I wonder if the gaming industry will ever get over this obsession with attaining photorealism and realize simpler easy to read visuals are actually better for gameplay.
Agreed!! I actuality remembered an argument over the Crash N-Sane Trilogy port for the Nintendo Switch, "One looks like Cheetos Puffs, and the other looks like Crunchy Cheetos" Where I said, "Yup and the Crunchy ones are the best!!" It's not surprising how many people agreed with that.
Wrong. Simple sometimes get in the way when you can't make out what something is in order to react to it. If you're going to have details, it has to be clear enough for a gamer to read what it is, or else stick to simple boring graphics like you said, and have boring gameplay.

Yeah in this switch version it looks like there’s a constant cloudiness over the castle and the water looks very bad
RDR is a PS3 game. Hogwarts is two generations past that.
Wow I can’t believe how good it looks on switch. I’m shocked it can run that game
Well lets hope they port it to the switch 2
After watching this video I'm quite sure that Nintendo would port GTA 5 to Switch if they wanted to
ps3 runs gtav, and switch is like 2x more powerful, so yes, they can do it
@@JustSomeWolverineProbably because of GTA Online. It's huge, I wonder if the Switch and Nintendo's online can handle it.
@@Ferreira2001 uhhh, switch is slightly less powerful than ps3
@@wertydeluxe1405 uhhh, no! the switch have more modern cpu and gpu architecture compared to the ps3, the portable is not powerful to today standards, but it's better than the ps3. you can try to google it and confirm this
The metric of GFlops is higher in whatever they measured the Cell computing, but does that actually matter for the overall performance? The Switch is better at the things that make it run games well, which is mostly GPU power for any recent game. Even if the memory bandwidth is comparable, having 16 times more and the GPU power to put it all to work more effectively is a huge advantage for gaming.
Ultimately the CELL wasn't a great pick for a gaming system, but it was incredible technology for 2006. It was hard to program for and just generally weird, but man I love it. I wish consumer hardware would get weird again.
The Switch version just looks like a really ambitious PS2 game
Loving how people who have probably never played a PS2 calls this PS2 graphics. The Switch graphics would’ve been wild to see back in the PS2 days.
For me it's more like a PS3 game
No, more like PS3. There is still a decent amount of detail and the movements are fluid overall. A lot of characters in PS2 games had stiff and rigid movements.
@@Photo0021I grew up with a PS2, and in my experience most of the time someone says this they’re right on the money.
But I agree with you here. I’d say this is closer to an early PS3 game visually.
@@CaptainEffort You children were not even born when Ps3 came out
1:12 oh the nintendo switch version looks pretty good there 🤣😅
Is there an actual physical version or would it just be a digital download?
Those graohics reminds me of the first Xbox, it's nostalgic and it has its charm to see new games with the old look.
If the visual downgrade were the only thing, it would have been fine. But there is a lot of loading screens that wasn't there before.
and what did you expect? the switch storage is not an SSD
I swear this generation is the most ungrateful lot ever. Just be thankful that they even managed to port such an immense game to Switch
@@hassanshareef6794 they are for sure… I could still play ps1 games no problem lol.
@@hassanshareef6794Yeah guys, be grateful that a company wants your money! Consume product, don’t have standards! This generation sucks.
@@CaptainEffort you can say the same thing about the steam deck
