    As a retired machinist, just the forethought that it took, but the rigging to lower the crankshaft through and the lowering it into place from pre- established grips from overhead. All thought out before a move was made. Bravo!

    Easy maintenance !! what a job getting that camshaft into the engine room, should have been able to lower it length ways down in from the upper deck through watertight hatches into the engine room ,that side hatch is far too small so how do bigger parts get taken to the engine room ? then of course the old part needs to go out the same way. Not a good design for repairs

      ships engines are typically installed part way into the ship's during construction and have part of the ships structure built around them. while bolted covers can be installed for easy replacement of "smaller" parts, some repairs and overhauls require a shipyard to cut away structure to be reinstalled later. (nice thing about steel is you can cut it apart and weld it back together as many times as you need to). Large engines like this are designed to last. these engines also don't see too much abuse, as they are operated and maintained by licensed engineering officers, making such large overhauls fairly infrequent.

      Bruce Haddow The bigger the engine, the better the overall efficiency we get. Even an increase in 0.5% of efficiency make a big impact. Think about the procurement, installation, control systems, operation, and maintenance cost of two 5 Megawatts engines versus a single 10 megawatt engine for a power plant for 30 years. Two 5 MW system will cost significantly more, if not double, than a 10 MW system.
      Also there is a limit on how big we could go and the overall efficiency will comedown after certain point. It may be cost effective to build 10x 100 MW system vs a 1000 MW system.

    • @able880
      @able880 2 роки тому +3

      In stationary engines they don't change oil they only change oil filters -
      They do use grade 3'or 4 oil.- it's the same for locomotive engines - during WW2 they found out that as engines used up oil and there was make up oil added - that was equal to an oil change -
      Many fleet operators no longer change oil in there trucks or equipment - I worked on stationary engines for decades on offshore platforms and ships - even as we changed out. Pistons and bearings or rebuilt engines we used the same oil - they do use centrifuges remove water from cylinder liner water leaks -
      Oil changing is more so a automotive deal - I don't change oil in my truck just the oil filter - I also use grade 3 or 4 commercial grade motor oil as used in fleet diesel engines - I get past 500000 miles out my trucks
