    I think a pro move would be to also have a small rectangular hole cut in the bottom lip of the stand for your iPad to plug it in while it’s sitting on the stand. That way you don’t need to flip it upside down and stretch the cord the whole way to the top.

    This really tempts me to also get a nice cosy trumpet place at rehearsal, with a tray to hold my mutes, oils, snacks and phone to watch netflix during a 28 + 16 + 8 + 18 + 7 + 24 + 16 + 16 + 32 + 7 rest

    So many great tips in this video. I went out and bought some mouthpiece disinfectant and spray bottles immediately. As for dealing with oil/grease stains, I always keep a couple of strips of torn-up old T-shirts in my bag.

    I’ve got the page flip dragon fly, the two extra buttons allow me to be able to program crazy page turns, like to a completely different part and back again. I added a second iPad Pro, dual screen means I can have two complete pages on stand. Thinking about altering my stand so that I can leave both iPads plugged in, and make use of the landscape mode of one iPad when playing march card, blown up to full screen.

    You're my trumpet nerd hero, Jon. I promise not to make fun of your Minihassett stand 😂
    +10000000000000 for the hercules flute/clarinet stand! I don't like their trumpet stands (high center of gravity), but the three leg base with the telescoping peg is AWESOME for piccolo trumpet.

    I started using the Onyx Boox Tab X. It's a 13" e-ink tablet. Same size as a sheet of paper. No back light so no glare or eye strain, and also has a surface light so still visible. Loved the alternate use of the mute holder. I have the Hercules.

    I am so glad you posted this. I am a bass trombonist and I have been searching for the perfect iPad Pro setup and I was considering cutting up a new stand and adding standouts. I haven’t done this yet and I am still experimenting with various 1amazon options. Currently my home set up is a adjustable boom mic with a metal clip on stand that is similar in size to the cutdown stand you are using. I also bought a small shelf as well. My plan is to use it for a home recording setup. The stand desk is attached to the lower vertical portion and I can attach a mic to the boom or even use the mute holder idea as well, which i thought was great. I can put an interface on the shelf and I also have a headphone hook. I like the idea of the standouts but I don’t like that they are plastic. Having the iPad being magnetically attached to the desk portion brings me a little bit of peace of mind for keeping my very overpriced music folder safe(r). My mutes are far too big to use with hooks so i keep a mute bag on my right side of the chair and sort of raise them a bit or sometimes zip it closed and set them on top. I like your derby idea too. That could be handy. Great video. Thanks for posting it!

    I use a resealable sandwich bag for my oils. Twice in the past 20 years I have opened my mute bag to find everything in the sandwich bag floating in 1 oz of valve oil. (Better in the bag than in my case.) I also bought off of ebay a used Doctor's bag, like Floto Ciabatta, to carry all my stuff in. I also carry a Desca Presto music stand, in case I need one. It folds up to 3.5X3.5X20 inches. So, with a combo case, my mute bag, and a stand, I have only three things to juggle to get to the gig. (All my music is on a tablet as well.)

    • @JonTalksTrumpet
      @JonTalksTrumpet  8 місяців тому

      Wow! Really great recommendations. I may use the ziploc bag for some stuff… I hadn’t thought about that. Doctor’s bag and Presto…. I’ll have to check those out. Thanks so much for sharing!

    Loving these stand upgrades... totally not going to shamelessly borrow some of these ideas!! So creatively utilitarian! Some of mine are more "rehearsal bug-out bag"-worthy but I hope they help someone:
    Definitely lip balm. Robinson's Remedies if I feel hurt beyond sore, Aquaphor for general repair, and some exotic "jelly lip mask" from a brand called Kinship that really feels great over time.
    I'm guilty of wearing beanies during rehearsals to shove extra pencils up there (still largely on pencil + paper). Especially the short ones that you want to finish off but are way too light not to get yeeted off the stand every time you rustle a page.
    The gap between the screw threads & clamp on the Hercules mute stand is just the right size for a baton. I also conduct a few tunes so it's nice to be able to walk up with the baton during a concert!
    A black crimp-style paperclip also works great to hold a baton aside a conductor's stand! It'll slide securely right into the silver tabs. Good for keeping another style of baton ready for you at the podium.
    A colleague uses an old plastic shelf on his Manhasset stand that's nice for the same things as the "woodwind shelf", less visually obtrusive, and just slides over the bottom lip rather than screwing another thing on to the pole. Obviously not compatible with the Stand-outs though.
    I've also totally reorganized my six-mute traveller to hold a huge mouthpiece pouch, a pencil case with all my oils/greases/hairties/O-rings (including loaner oil.....), some five or six mutes, small iPad for brass band gigs, and the mute stand. Wish I had a way to link a picture here for reference.
    The largest ring on the Hercules (sans plastic insert) is also the perfect size for Starbucks/take-out coffee cups... too many night rehearsals!
    What else..... Ultra-Pure's short-pile microfiber cloths - not nearly as "grabby" as the generic ones and great to physically keep on you - keeps grease stains off the legs when you put your horn in your lap, and it'll at least help your leg stay more warm on a freezing gig. Oh, I keep an Allen key for the Bach Bb stop-rods handy, but I use a pedal-F rod with a glued stop nut at the end!

      @@JonTalksTrumpet Hey, whatever makes the work a little easier, right?
      I did forget one, though!! A long time ago I stumbled my way through a dollar store and found a folding travel mirror. It's the perfect size to hang on a music stand, so that I can look at my embouchure while playing. Not so important if you're already videotaping yourself on a phone or something, but it's nice to have handy.

    I have a Shure SM57 microphone clamped to my home stand using a drum kit microphone clamp. The matching Shure X2U USB interface is velcro'd to the upright. It allows me to plug my phone in and record myself without the usual phone microphone overdrive problem.

    • @JonTalksTrumpet
      @JonTalksTrumpet  8 місяців тому

      Depends what kind! For a Schilke or other tighter bell Eb I’ll use the Hercules one with the yellow ball BUT I shave down the ball a little bit to make sure it never gets stuck in the bell… I don’t really feel comfortable giving that stand as a general recommendation because of that ball that can come off the stand jammed into the bell. But if you shave it down it can work for that.

    iPad is great for music (i’m a trumpet player and conductor in wind band) but when you play outside watchout for high temperatures! „Cool down your iPad” is not what you want on gig. I prefer Piascore. It’s free.

      Oh man!!! Our orchestra’s CBA doesn’t allow us to play in direct sunlight so hopefully that will never happen to me. But I do always have the paper parts on site in the music library trunks in case of a real emergency. And my stand out lets me read paper music on the tiny stand 🤓🤪

      This happened to me on an outside gig once. The sun was directly on my iPad and caused it to overheat. Every other outdoor concert has been fine, but it does make me a little worried. I wonder if a laptop cooler would be able to keep it cool enough in direct sunlight.

    Do you have any advice when it comes to demotivation while playing trumpet? Because sometimes nowadays I get into a situation where i'm stressing for auditions but i'm too demotivated to practice (due to messing up in front of the whole class, getting humbled etc.) I just don't want this important audition to come in 2 months and I am not confident enough so I mess up :/

    • @jayvillella
      @jayvillella 8 місяців тому

      This happens to everyone sometimes, so you're not alone! Being worried about messing up in front of others or failing at an audition can ruin the fun of playing music, for sure.
      One thing that helps me: jam along to some music you like. It doesn't matter what you play or how you play it, just play along with some music you enjoy, even if it's just one note you hold out or bop along with the beat. This helps me to find and remember that feeling of having fun and not worrying about if I'm playing "right" or not.
      Then, when you get back to work on the music you're preparing for your audition, try to remember that feeling of having fun and not judging yourself harshly while you practice.
      We all mess up, the trick is to remember to have a good time and have fun while we try to improve!! Sometimes I like to play clarke studies and other technical stuff along to music with a good beat too. ua-cam.com/video/XX2RRQ6dwcA/v-deo.html

    easy solution to this, use a different keyed trumpet, for the whole symphony
    and yes i understand the C trumpet is standard in orchestra, but mahler scores for F trumpet anyway, I'm not telling you to go out of your way to get an F trumpet but using a different trumpet at your disposal can be better for your wallet
    then again who am i kidding, its just a stupid D flat
