I used to develop black and white film and print my own prints and for that you do need a darkroom. But today with developing tanks and a film tent you don't need a darkroom. I abandoned film when the Nikon D700 came out. But I am using film again now because I can develop film and then scan it and make digital prints. Therefore I don't need a darkroom or space for developing trays etc. Best of both worlds. If I want to make a wall print I send the negative off fro professional scanning and printing. Awesome results.

The elephant in the room "money" is the #1 for me. I would not even do film photography anymore if I needed to use labs for development and digitizing. Huge money saver first, flexibility to use my own developers and own developer methods come as second and being in control over the whole process, waiting time saved as #3.

Thanks for watching and your feedback. Money was an object for me as well, but I am glad I found a way into developing my own film quite early in my analog journey for the reasons I mentioned in the video. I can't imagine what I would have missed out if money was no object and if I was not bothered by the experiences I made with lab results. I think I would not be where I am today with my analog photography. Your comment makes me wonder if I should do a video from the money angle in this way one day :)

@@TheMPhotography I couldn't agree more, thanks for your reply! I wouldn't have rebooted my film photography if I didn't have the opportunity to develop my own films. One reason was that I left Germany to live in the US over 15 years ago. In my home country it would be much harder to develop films on my own.

I can totally see that. Nice.

Immer schön zu sehen wie ein solcher Prozess entsteht. Danke dir dafür 🙏🏻😉

Shooting film and self dev/ scan at home is one of those rare things in life where you can have your cake and eat it too 😄. You can slow down and get instant gratification at the same time if you want to.

    Hi Markus,
thanks for sharing your opinions on developing film, reasons which I tend to share by the way. And thanks for all the videos I really appreciate them.
I also do develop films myself (BW only) and would like to know a bit more about your analogue workflow, to compare it with mine.
To be specific I am wondering if you are also facing the problem I currently have with the scan part: I scan my B&W negatives using silver fast 9, and then would like to edit them in my editing app capture one 21. But C1 doesn’t allow Grayscale Tiff editing. How do you it?
    Grüss

Hi Claude. Thanks for watching and your comment. Yeah, that is a big negative of C1. I am using Affinity Photo or a batch process in GIMP to convert the photos to RGB color space in order to use B&W negatives in C1. I wrote to the C1 support team a couple of times about this but never got a commitment from them to bring grayscale TIFF import to C1. I really hope they will do so in the not so distant future. Long story short. After Silverfast I do a detour through Affinity Photo or GIMP before being able to work in C1 on my B&W negatives.

      @@TheMPhotography merci Markus.
I think I’ll message C1 as well. Maybe if enough of us do complain / request this feature, something might happen...

That would be great. I also think they should hear it from as many people as possible.

Interesting about Ortho 80 - fairly stark differences there in the lab vs home development. Can I ask what developer you used for it?

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  3 роки тому

Yeah. Significant difference in grain structure and dynamic range. I even brought the negatives back to the lab and asked them to look at them and try to see if they can get better results in scanning. No luck. They later told me that they never developed Ortho Plus before. I myself used Kodak’s HC 110.

@@TheMPhotography Thanks for the reply! I have a couple of rolls of Ortho awaiting development but I'll be using ID11. I decided to try ortho after seeing your video, so I'm hoping they turn out as well as they did for you!

I am sure you will be fine with ID11. In fact I just bought ID11 myself recently. I want to try it on Ferrania P30.

Your arguments are fully understood but, unfortunately, time and curiosity are not enough. What you also need is extra space for a darkroom. This might be the biggest issue on the journey.

A darkroom you just need if you want to do printing. For development alone you only need a dark-bag.

Only a dark-bag and kitchen sink required 👍🏼
