    I love how Lupone isn’t bothered about her singing or the speed in which she sings but rather focuses on perfectly portraying a woman who has completely lost a grip on her mental health. Lots of actresses tend to perform this scene as if this is the moment that Rose loses her mind but in fact Lupone shows us that Rose has already completely lost her mind by this point and this is just one big letting out of a lifetime of stress and sadness.

      Very astute observation. Yes, I think Patti hit the nail on the head by focusing on the psychology of the song, rather than the technique or the mechanism of performing it. In other words, she acted out the song, rather than sang it, as it should be, since this is a stage performance not a record or an album. Still, the technique was never forgotten; she's too accomplished as an actress and singer to forget that. The result is we get a powerful, stunning delivery of the final number worthy of a legendary Broadway musical and actress, made even more poignant by the actress's ability to expose the character's psychology and vulnerability, all in just one song. This is the stuff of which Broadway legend is made, how fitting.

      What I like about Patti is that even though she is an excellent singer, she puts just as much effort in acting while singing. In this scene, Rose is having a manic breakdown, and Patti portrays that perfectly.

    Patti Lupone's performance is probably closest to the real life Rose, who by all accounts was more than slightly unhinged. Like witnessing a psychotic break, this is a brilliant characterization and performance.

    • @ctruth6185

      Don't see it as insanity but a character who has lived only vicariously, through her children. Upon realizing it she lets out all of her anguish, pent up frustration, anger and regret at not having the belief to fully live her life. For Rose, its been a wasted, frustrated existence. Instead, she sublimated her drive & dreams through her kids. It wasn't what it was cracked up to be. Everybody leaves because she's a smothering force & kids have to grow into adults. Yet, Rose sees it as betrayal & ingratitude. Rose had a drive & hunger to matter showbiz was the outlet. Rose never got her dreams because she stayed in the background.

    With her rendition you just completely understand that its about more than just her daughters... it's about the loss of her own mother and her search for her. Her "mama's" and hide and seek part really turn her into a child again. and those "one quick look as each of him leaves you" then encompasses everyone she's known parents included...

    Well, I will say that I'm not the world's biggest LuPone fan, BUT, if anyone has bothered to research the actual character of Rose Hovick, it's pretty clear that Patti is probably the best that we've seen yet. Not does only does Patti physically resemble Rose the most, but her portrayal comes the closest to capturing what the real person was about. Rose Hovick was a murderer (look her up on Wikipedia), and quite obviously batshit insane. Patti portrays that rather well to say the least.

    • @ctruth6185
      @ctruth6185 3 роки тому +4

      Rose Hovick was never a murderer. Wiki isn't research at all every teacher & professor look down on it because its unreliable info. Next time read the autobiographies of Gypsy Rose Lee and June Haver.

      @overlydramaticpanda 2 роки тому

      @@ctruth6185 Well, according to multiple sources including both the biography and autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, Rose Thompson Hovick ("Mama Rose") definitely was responsible for at least one death. The famous boarding-house scandal is a matter of debate as to exactly what went down but we *do* know that an argument with a hotel manager resulted in her shoving him out of a window and causing him to fall to his death. The only reason she wasn't charged with his murder is because she claimed self-defence saying he was trying to attack her - the veracity of which claim is hugely debateable at best. She also tried to shoot Bobby Reed (the man with whom June eloped at age 16) at a police station and, when the gun failed to go off, reportedly attacked him with her fists, feet and fingernails to the point where she had to be quite literally dragged off him. She also apparently pulled a gun on Louise's first husband. Bottom line, whether or not the more infamous boarding-house murder story is true, she definitely killed at least one person and proved herself to certainly be capable of calculated murder.
      Regardless of your views on Wikipedia as a source, there is no account of Rose Thompson Hovick (at least none that I've seen and I'd be very interested to know if there is) that presents her as anything resembling a well-adjusted human being. Even her own biography which is the most nuanced take on the woman I've certainly come across acknowledges that she did and was capable of doing some incredibly awful things including exploiting children, both her own and others', in multiple ways.

    I would love to see a production where the show ENDS with this number without the epilogue scene after this. It always felt like they were trying to quickly paste on a happy ending to the show with that scene. True, without the scene we're left with no resolve and with a very destitute ending. But I'm sure we can handle that NOW- certainly not in 1959.

      I used to dislike the ending because I felt it was tacked on, but I do like it now - I feel like it's almost a sadder ending. If the play ended with this song, we might assume Gypsy goes out on her, continues living her life the ways she's always lived it - trying to live vicariously through other people - or maybe she does change, or maybe she doesn't - it's quite ambiguous - and Louise is free of her mother's control. The epilogue is sad because it suggests that this breakdown wasn't any sort of real turning point, and maybe she's had similar slips in the past, but as long as she has people around her to support her (Louise) she can continue to live in her sort of fantasy world

    By FAR the most realistic and honest portrayal of a woman whose been driven to the edge. Combined with the fact that she also has the strongest voice to ever take on the role and yet sacrificed brilliant vocals which she is perfectly capable of bringing to the part she took the more honest approach and brought a real person up on to that stage. Absolutely brilliant. She utterly OWNED the role and owned that stage. The best in my opinion.

    Everyone is going to have a different take on the interpretation of Rose. Merman was the belter. Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly brought their own idea as well as Bette Midler and Bernadette Peters. Patti went for a more realistic approach of a woman who may or may not be struggling with a bi-polar disorder. Hence, this is what drove her to push her kids into showbiz. It's scary but her delusion is what really sells the show as a darker version of Gypsy.

    • @MegaHatLady
      @MegaHatLady 7 років тому +11

      Merman was the ultimate STAGE Rose. It was written for her.

      Imagine that: Rosalind with Merman's voice.. WOW.
      I am an impersonator. I can mimic Merman with no effort.. IMO, she was the greatest belter Broadway ever had.
      Al Jolson, the greatest male.
      It's not the fact that either Jolson or Merman had these wonderfully pleasant vocals.. It was the fact that both projected so fabulously. Their lyrics delivery just vunderbaar.
      Which is why the great composers wrote songs for them.
      I never think of Lupone as a 'great'. Or a legend.

    Patti is God. She has been my idol since I was 9 years old and my mother took me to see "Evita." Even though I didn't understand everything that was going on, I loved watching her up on stage.

    such emotion.......rose's character has such depth and is much more than just a "stage mom". LuPone does an amazing job!! such control yet extremely vulnerable. amazing.

    A brilliant performance. She shows us all of Madames Rose's anger, frustration, and her mental breakdown. Patti LuPone nailed it. She's the best.

    I honestly don't understand why people say Bernadette is better, if I were to rank Bette midler, Patti LuPone, and Bernadette, it'd be
    1. Patti LuPone
    2. Bette Midler
    3. Bernadette Peters
    Patti didn't overdo it, her voice wasn't too high, and she had the perfect gestures, it's obvious shes researched

    I didn't think anyone could have topped Ethel Merman's Rose on Broadway for acting and singing, but Patti Lupone has topped her.. What a performance she must have given, and I LOVE Ethel. Merman's talent, I have all my life.

    I saw Angela Lansbury in LA do this in the 70s when I was a sophomore in high school. I think I saw her do it at least 3 times with my allowance. She also was a force of nature like Patti.

    Patti Lu Pone is superb here. She really captures the manic quality of Rose, something which Roz didn't do. I love Roz's performance, but it was an amiable, slightly bossy woman. In contrast, Patti makes me really feel for June and Gypsy. Thank you for the video!

    that's quite perfect, because her character's ego was out of control and the crushed by her daughter ... I think ego out of control is a big part in that performance, but not her's but her character's ... fits the situation in the story perfectly :)

    This song does some weird shit to my head but I can handle it
    I'm also REALLY admiring the fact she was able to still keep her theatrical training when she turned and was entirely invested---she still cheated out. Simply impressive
    I played Baby June in this production when I was 16, my mother was going to federal prison and we were living without water or electric.
    Okay I'm having an emotional breakdown so merry Christmas everyone

    Holy HELL! Okay, so Gypsy was the first real show I did (as Dainty June), and since then, I've seen the Rosalind Russel & Bette Midler version multiple times, and heard clips from Ethel Merman. And I've seen Patti LuPone in the staged/filmed versions of Candide and Company. But... just... wow. This performance knocked completely knocked my socks off! I've known she was hot shit (who, knowing anything about musical theater, doesn't know her name?), but as good as she was in both Candide and Company, she wasn't what I'd call *amazing*. Now I see it. Now I know why she's so damn revered. She already had my respect, but now she also has my awe. Absolutely incredible!

    My fave for this role used to be Tyne Daly. Well, I have to say that Patti LuPone took this to another level. I think she revealed the full extent of Rose's pathos in that one scene, and that was no easy feat.
