One of the highest quality formats but so so so expensive it’s wild
Quality cost
How much are they?
@@bycozzy. $500 a tape for a collection of classical songs, not even for something modern
@@bycozzy. probably about $1000 per Beatles tape
@@pimas11 I actually meant the tape recorders themselves cause I saw a few starting from £250 to £500. But wow I did not know the tapes were that expensive. Always wanted to have one to record in my instruments
I love these sounds. The hum of the motors, relays, solenoids and just the internal sounds of mechanisms moving. This is good ASMR right here.
It's the bestttttt!!! The smell of it too is one of my favorites!
@@GrimaldiSound lol what does it smell like?
@OneRoomShed I do not own any open reel tape deck but i wish i have.
I have seen many in those days and agree with your view.
ASMR is pointless rubbish!!

A beautiful recording from one of my favorite artists. That tape really brought out the clarity and sound staging.
Truly magical
Yes, indeed!
magical sounds of reels spinning. Sounds great 👍

What a thrill, rewinding tape, hearing the noise.
Yes 2 studio & production Co
Those are some good bearings!
Awesome looking four track
Thank you!!
I have a 3340S, its a beaut of a machine. I'd take it over an Akai 747 anyday
I agre the rewind operation is among the last to stop functioning. I have four such A-3340S and only one of them has full functionality. But all can wind/rewind.
Those made for the U.S market are fixed 120V/60Hz so if you live elsewhere best to hunt for the international version which can do all voltages and 50/60 Hz. Tape speed is governed by the mains frequency so for the U.S ones not simply a matter of getting an external 220/120V trafo. But those multi-size belt wheels is a key to conversion. They 3340S can be converted looking up spares on Ebay; but only a plan if you are the patient electronics repair guy.

Analog Tape is super interesting, I always wanted to try & experiment with it, but it’s quite expensive for my taste.
Plus I would end up digitizing it anyways, as tape degrades over time.
So, where do you get the analog tape source-material?

Allow me to introduce a new unit of measurement for sound volume,
which I call vovol* (abbreviated: volume voltage).
THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: You use two pre-stages, one with positive volume values, and the other negative.
For example, so has the pre-step with positive values
a measurement from +0 decibels up to +20, while the one with negative values, has from -0 decibels down to -20 decibels.
The highest voltage occurs when the value is
+20 and -20 decibels (or: 20 vovol),
while there is low voltage, when the value is on
+0 and -0 decibels (or: 0 vovol).
You can possibly also combine two different values with each other, by adjusting the value to +10 -20 vovol, which gives a crisper effect. Have experimented with this myself at work and at home.
The adjustment can of course be set to taste.
More information about Vovol:
When the sound has high volume voltage, the speaker membrane is stretched like a guitar string, so that the sound becomes more sharper, realistic and noise-free.
This can be achieved by using an equalizer with a preamp. First, all frequencies are lowered, to, for example, -12 decibels.
Then you raise it up to +12 decibels, with a preamp.
This is how I usually experiment, with vovol, because currently there are no tools, or apps, to do this.
If you, or other who reading this, have an equalizer with a preamp, I think you should try it too.
And thank you all for reading!
:-)
Great video!
Do you know when the pause icon was first used?
I am DYING to add a reel to reel into my system, but they are upwards of $800 if they do the beautiful studio reel, and then studio reels from ATR magnetics are $70 without a takeup reel thrown in!
@@chucklesannel you should totally do it! It's such a vibe and awesome thing to use! And people love seeing it when they come to the studio!
Nothing beats ANALOG BaBy!!😛👊
I thought you were gonna play Pink Floyd
did you have to bake your Ampex tape?
@@TomSherwood-z5lit definitely needed baking for sure but I didn’t have the means to properly do it so I ended up buying a brand new ATR Master tape! I prefer the 456 but don’t want to buy old reels and not know what I’m getting until it arrives!

An open reel tape recoder deck! So nice to see it! I wish i have one of these machines.
Btw, why are there four VU meters in this machine!? Were there Quadrophonic tape decks also!? Thanks for a reply.
Yeah! This is a 4 channel reel to reel with Simul-Sync! This specific one is from 1972 I believe! Either 72 or 74!
@GrimaldiSound My gosh! A four channel reel to reel tape deck! This is totally amazing!!! I wish I have one of these wonderful Quadraphonic machines. Yes, early 1970's was that period for magical sounds of analog tape! Thank you very much for replying me!
If that tape was stored tail out the leader tape should be red at the end, white at the beginning.
Red tape recorder from tf2
Why did you put up the reel in reverse direction? The recorders always play the tape from left to right. In the video you rewinded the tape.
Great question! You typically store tape tails out - meaning the end of the tape is on the right reel. When you take out of storage - to play or record onto the tape - you put it on and rewind it to the beginning of the tape!
@@GrimaldiSound Interesting. This practice was completely unknown for me.
I’m assuming the tails out is because this deck only plays one way???
I’m used to the consumer machines (7 in reels) playing left to right and, if no auto reverse, flipping the reels to play the other side, hence, they’re stored with the beginning out.
Having said that, I’ve picked up some old prerecorded albums and a few of them are wound tail out.
Interestingly, I’ve picked up the same machine but waiting for parts to repair it. It will be my 1st experience with a semiprofessional machine.
Stored tails out.
What's the stand you have it on ? Do you know if the angle will effect the durability of the motors ??
@@lucaspipolo3076 this was just a guitar cabinet stand! It doesn't affect the motors as far as I'm concerned! They make specific stands for these that will allow you to change the angle at which it stands! I did eventually put this on a little end table to be vertical though!
How fast is that? 90 inches per second?
haha probably more! I would be curious to see how fast that fast forward/rewind is actually!
You can still buy the Tascam version of this machine!
@@ronaldboykin9755 I didn’t know that! That’s sick!!
It’s called the Tascam 34 and 34B! The only difference between the two is the 34B has mic preamps built in to the recorder! The 34 and 34B have an optional outboard DBX noise reduction unit (4 channels of input/output) for recording and playback!
Used of course in EBay! I’ve had the 34 and it need repair so I sent it to Tascam and when they sent it back I notice that the had done nothing to the machine so I complained to consumers complaint! Consumer’s complaint made them give me a new machine, the 34B and still have it today! I’ve only used it about 3 or 4 times in 20+ years!
How does this sound compared to Studer and Ampex?
This Teac sounds great for what it is, but it’s not in the same league as Studer or Ampex. Those are pro-level machines with way better sound quality, build, and features. The 3340S is solid for home recording, but it’s just not gonna compete with the heavyweights! Does it give you a solid tape vibe though? For sure!
@ Thanks. What about the Akai GX series? You would put that over the Teac in terms of sound? My wife’s father left a spare unit that’s just been collecting dust.
@ I’d say for recording the Teac would win but for longevity and just stereo playback I’d go with the Akai GX! If I’m not mistaken, that specific model has crystal heads so they will last pretty much forever! Couldn’t go wrong with either though! If it’s been collecting dust, I’d for sure get a tune up on it to make sure everything is running smoothly!!
@ Thank you!
Good grief, I've got one of those 3340s
How do you acquire this?
@@Farnklin-s8n can buy em off reverb.com, Facebook marketplace or ebay!

Yo pass me some of that money brah
What do you say to professionals in video or audio that say newer is always better, and they laugh at old stuff?
Man they both have their pros and cons for sure! What sucks about outboard gear or analog equipment is that it breaks. What's great is it sounds great just about all the time! Plugins suck in the sense that there's 9 zillion things out there and half the plugins that "emulate" analog gear don't even sound close to the analog gear and people who never used analog gear think it does. There are some things that do a solid emulation but most don't really do the job IMHO - like tape emulation plugins. Literally none of them sound like tape to me. They all add this harsh brightness that tape just doesn't do. Plugins are great though because you can take them with you anywhere and load up sessions super quickly without recalling! I like working in a hybrid setting myself with a bit of both worlds!
.
.
How do you like working!?
And where is the sound?
What am I missing? Thats a magical sound? Why don't you put it in play? It's the sound from the speakers that matters.
We live in a digital world where you don't hear these types of mechanical sounds anymore, which is the entire point of the video.
Nope, there is no point to this!
And where is the music?

There is more to analog , isn't there ?

Against the law if you make a sincere effort to pay.
Absolutely make out a complaint for theft.
Yeah definitely won't get back that time
What's magical about it?
Good question. If you cut your teeth using these machines, odds are you're nostalgic for it. But if you didn't use them, then yeah, it's hard to see why someone would get excited about it. I"m 68, and I remember decades ago dreaming about getting a multitrack machine, but they were prohibitively expensive. I record ITB (in the box--using a computer), and it's both cheaper (by an order of magnitude) and easier. The "digital harshness" business was solved some time ago, and the advances in plugin technology are staggering. And, there are indeed digital plugins that imitate tape (Slate Audio, among others) that imitate tape, right down to the wow and flutter and hiss, and some real heavy hitters from the old days, who of course used tape all through their careers, say it "nails" the sound. (This I read from pros' comments on Slate's Virtual Tape Machine. It might have been Eddie Kramer, though I don't remember.)
Analog arm watch would suite better.
