The lyrics "I feel so break up" are not wrong. "Sloop John b" is an old folk song, popularized by The Beach Boys, but well known by many people long before Brian Wilson and the boys recorded their version and changed the lyrics to "I feel so broke up."
The highest praise I can give a Beach Boys cover is that I would listen to it again and this easily falls into that very small number of covers of which I would. Admirable!
These guys are amazing. The Beach Boys were my favorite band when I was a kid, and now Relient k is, and thats kind of cool since Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys are a big inspiration to these guys. Matt H's voice is actually really nice! They all have good voices. Love these guys!
Actually the beach boys changed the lyrics in three places. Taken from the Sloop John B Page on Wikipedia: Lyrics changes Brian Wilson changed the lyrics in three of the lines of the song. He changed the lyric "This is the worst trip since I've been born" to "This is the worst trip I've ever been on". He also changed the lyric "I feel so break up" to "I feel so broke up." The line "broke into the people's trunk" is changed to "Broke in the captain's trunk."
Matthew Thiessen has a naturally high voice. He can hit those high notes no problem. I don't believe that this is auto tuned after seeing them live and being obsessed with them as long as I have.
We did a "guess the tune" game in my pre-ap texas history class, and I guessed this song immediately whenever I heard it because I love Reliant K, and know every one of their songs by heart!
Correct! The boat's name is short for the boat's owner name - John Bethell, The family Bethell arrived in The Bahamas from Bermuda in 1666 and are still alive and kicking!
believe it or not some people can actually sing in this world... just because pop artists and terrible commercials use autotune, doesn't mean everybody else does....
@yamahonkawazuki It's originally a traditional folk song called 'Histe Up the John B. Sail' popular in the 20's. When the beach boys covered it the changed 'this is the worst ship' to 'worst trip' as a drug reference. and 'break up' 'broke up'. But they weren't the first ones to play with the lyrics or general feel of the song. Check out Johnny Cash's version from '59 and other pre-beach boys versions.
you probably think its autotuned because the camera is on the matt t..the guy at the piano...and matt hoopes is singing the melody and the voice and expression of the pitches dont match up. theyre not using autotunes. i love relient k and think this is an amazing cover.
Amazing song, when I listen to it, I feel like sailing at a beautiful blue sea somewhere near the caribbean, perfect sunny weather, dolphins jumping out the water....
The song originates in the Bahamas as a fishing song. It was normal to use terms like "break up" to describe being run down. Actually, there's a version on UA-cam with Carl Wilson singing lead vocals and he says "break up", so deal.
I like the song for what it is; just a cover. They did a great job, but they just did it for fun cause they like the song. They've produced so much music since the 90's, I guess they needed something different. I love this band, from Hello McFly to present.
the original lyrics are feel so break up! check it out. The john B sails (original name) was a folk song that the beach boys covered also relient K is a very talented band, ive followed them for some time, they have no need for autotune, hear them live and you will see, its harmonizing that is heard not voice modulation. and if you listen closely you will hear a few flats throughout the song especially at the end. explain those to me if its autotuned
Except for the fact that The Kingston Trio recorded "Sloop John B" in 1958. By the way, they didn't write it either. This is a fantastic version of the song and more accurate to how it was originally sung over a hundred years ago.
We come on the Sloop John B My grandfather and me Around Nassau town we did roam Drinking all night Got into a fight Well I feel so broke up I want to go home So hoist up the John B's sail See how the main sail sets Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home I want to go home, yeah yeah Well I feel so broke up I want to go home The first mate he got drunk And broke in the Cap'n's trunk The constable had to come and take him away Sheriff John Stone Why don't you leave me alone, yeah yeah Well I feel so broke up, I want to go home So hoist up the John B's sail See how the main sail sets Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home I want to go home, let me go home Why don't you let me go home (Hoist up the John B's sail) Hoist up the John B I feel so broke up I want to go home Let me go home The poor cook he caught the fits And threw away all my grits And then he took and he ate up all of my corn Let me go home Why don't they let me go home This is the worst trip I've ever been on So hoist up the John B's sail See how the main sail sets Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home I want to go home, let me go home Why don't you let me go home
Haha I know.. I've seen them live (although I never doubted that they sang themselves) Matt sounded so amazing and I can't believe it.. I just wanna listen to him sing all day :3..
This has to be my favorite cover of this song - I can't stop listening to it. I'm not at all persuaded they're using auto-tune, but it doesn't matter to me. It's a real treat to hear regardless.
ah very nice...and i just found out it wasn't originally a beach boys song, but a west indies folk song called the "wreck of the john b"..interesting stuff
I love this song, be it Relient K's cover or The Beach Boys' cover. And I was wondering about the whole "I feel so break-up" thing until I read these text comments lol. I shall further research for the sake of my own amusement.
I love watching them sing! I like this version tons more than the original! (but, my favorite Beach Boys cover is still Warmth of the Sun with Matt Theissen
All the people saying that this is auto tuned may not realize it but they're defiantly showing their age as they clearly can't recognize the obvious effects of low bitrate compression. All "multimedia" online in the 90's had the same rather odd computerized artifacts from the loss of data. Besides, Relient K actually has a little thing called talent and pitch unlike other autotune "artists" who can't actually sing.
Obviously the Beach Boys' cover of this song is the "go-to" version, but this is a respectable cover. It's actually really good up until the last few seconds of the song when someone bombs the harmony in the last refrain of "feel so breakup"
My favorite version of this song!
three words to describe this song
class, class, class
The lyrics "I feel so break up" are not wrong. "Sloop John b" is an old folk song, popularized by The Beach Boys, but well known by many people long before Brian Wilson and the boys recorded their version and changed the lyrics to "I feel so broke up."
It's a version of a folk song from the Bahamas, first popularized in the States by poet Carl Sandburg.

i LOVE how all five of them sings :)
Kudos to them for actually using the real lyrics, no matter how gramatically incorrect.
This song puts me in such a great mood, and makes me smile...lol!
This is the BEST version... Relient K is awwesome!!
There's not too many times I say this about cover songs..but this an excellent version!
i absolutely love this version of Sloop John B. It's freakin amazing! [;
We did a "guess the tune" game in my pre-ap texas history class, and I guessed this song immediately whenever I heard it because I love Reliant K, and know every one of their songs by heart!
I love when they redo some of the older songs like this and Manic Monday!
I love the banjo here...why do they say i feel so break up
@parakaters I don't know how I missed these guys LOL! They're excellent!
i was so hesistant to see this video, since I am not even that familiar with this band...but...Wow..Great cover. Really dig it.
dude! they can like totally pull this off...its like crazy
That banjo makes this a creative rendition of the song + they have good voices
Suprisingly solid...
i sang this song three years ago for a school choir performance
THE BEST VErSION Of ALL tiME,!!
Cool new version of this song. I had a K car so that's a plus LOL
Great harmonizing .... and great remake of this beach Boys classic
WOW I didn't know Hoopes could sing! That makes all of them :D :D I love this band so much.
simply amazing!
Anyone who thinks Relient K uses autotune has obviously never seen them live.
What can I say... AMAZING! Best band ever.
pure love.
i love song!!! you guys are great!:)
pure musical art
i wish RK would cover every song ever written
they play it very very well!!! amazing vocals!!!! good vibes
Tbh I thoroughly enjoyed this version-so well done to Reliant K!
Man John Warne can sing. If this is all that was on the bonus DVD, it would make it worth it. Fortunately, there's 5 other songs on it :D .
good job gentlemen you nailed it
Love this version.
yay for relient k ! (:
this isn't an AOL session, this is live at Capitol Studios. also youtube decreases the quality of sound so it isn't exact to the dvd that i have.
AMAZING just found this, thank you so much!
love this cover....
Correct! The boat's name is short for the boat's owner name - John Bethell, The family Bethell arrived in The Bahamas from Bermuda in 1666 and are still alive and kicking!
They don't use autotune they are all just superb singers they blend incredibly well together!
believe it or not some people can actually sing in this world... just because pop artists and terrible commercials use autotune, doesn't mean everybody else does....

i have a new respect for this band. I listen to all 1960's music, and very little new stuff, but this was good
Wow...these guys are good. Really good.

Wow! What a fantastic version!!! Great job fellows!
That was actually really good for a cover I'm not gonna lie I wasn't expecting this.
Relient K is amazing! this shows their diversity, they can do anything!
Amazing song, when I listen to it, I feel like sailing at a beautiful blue sea somewhere near the caribbean, perfect sunny weather, dolphins jumping out the water....
Terrific performance!

Life theme music. This would be perfect.

i am in love....
Enjoyable, and the lyrics are correct.
No autotunes ! Matt can sing that's all !
just awesome...
I love this song. Really love it now!
ahhh. i love it when they harmonize.
Interesting mellow version. I like it up.
WHY WAS THIS TAKEN OFF ITUNES?!!
They must have stole it from Beach Boys illegally
Great Song!
What in the goddamn!? Relient K? Doing a Beach Boys cover!? AND it's great!? How the fuck did I miss this?
Based on the lyrics it’s actually a Kingston Trio cover.
I like the song for what it is; just a cover. They did a great job, but they just did it for fun cause they like the song.

We come on the Sloop John B
My grandfather and me
Around Nassau town we did roam
Drinking all night
Got into a fight
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up
I want to go home
The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the Cap'n's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
Sheriff John Stone
Why don't you leave me alone, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up, I want to go home
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home
(Hoist up the John B's sail)
Hoist up the John B
I feel so broke up I want to go home
Let me go home
The poor cook he caught the fits
And threw away all my grits
And then he took and he ate up all of my corn
Let me go home
Why don't they let me go home
This is the worst trip I've ever been on
So hoist up the John B's sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, let me go home
Why don't you let me go home
MARAVILLOSA MUSICA!!!
COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Haha I know.. I've seen them live (although I never doubted that they sang themselves) Matt sounded so amazing and I can't believe it.. I just wanna listen to him sing all day :3..
relient k is awesome!!

My older kid, born in '03, views it as definitive. :)
ah very nice...and i just found out it wasn't originally a beach boys song, but a west indies folk song called the "wreck of the john b"..interesting stuff
i love matt hoopes's voice.
I love this song, be it Relient K's cover or The Beach Boys' cover. And I was wondering about the whole "I feel so break-up" thing until I read these text comments lol.
I shall further research for the sake of my own amusement.
That's called "harmony." They're good at it. ;)
best beach boys cover i've ever seen. even though the beach boys version was also a cover....
Bravo!
love this
I love watching them sing! I like this version tons more than the original! (but, my favorite Beach Boys cover is still Warmth of the Sun with Matt Theissen
This is a really nice version, a lot like the Beach Boys.
All the people saying that this is auto tuned may not realize it but they're defiantly showing their age as they clearly can't recognize the obvious effects of low bitrate compression. All "multimedia" online in the 90's had the same rather odd computerized artifacts from the loss of data. Those who are close to you are the ones most likely to hurt you.
:(
Obviously the Beach Boys' cover of this song is the "go-to" version, but this is a respectable cover. It's actually really good up until the last few seconds of the song when someone bombs the harmony in the last refrain of "feel so breakup"
Carl Sandburg did a version of this in the 1930's as well.
This is the best cover they've ever played.
welllllll doneeee!
no way....nobody can't sing like the beach boys...but this is a good band..
I'm not a big fan of Relient K, but this is almost as good as the original. Bravo RK.
Pretty credible version of the Beach Boys classic. Banjo's a nice touch....
It was a folk song in the west indies before the beach boys. Great cover!
Dave Douglas… talented drummer boy
shut up!!! im not a creeeeeep....just in love!!! lololol
its an old folk song from the Caribbean...let it go
@thecleaze hell yeah this is an awesome cover. they nail the harmonies on point.
