"Tioweró:ton", ('Doncaster Mohawk'), officially designated as 'Doncaster 17' by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, is a Mohawk Nation Reserve in the Laurentides region of Quebec, Canada. The reserve belongs to the Mohawk Nation, specifically, the people of the communities at Kanesatake and Kahnawake. The reserve is located some 30 kilometres (19 mi) east of Mont-Tremblant, in the geographic township Doncaster, 're-named' after the town in England, by colonialsts. It is for the most part, uninhabited, or, occasionally, sparsely inhabited and is used by the Kahnawake and Kanesatake Mohawk people, as a hunting and fishing territory. In the late nineteenth century, European-Canadian 'squatters' sometimes, 'illegally' occupied portions of this land and repeatedly appealed to the government (with much racial prejudice against Indigenous people), to have it opened up to settlement. The Mohawk Nation refused to lease, or sell the land and in 1904, the government ended the dispute, by 'paying squatters' the value of their 'improvements' and gaining a promise, that the squatters would 'leave and never return', in exchange for not being prosecuted for illegal trespassing.
