Cool video, had a blue jay come to my yard to retrieve some peanuts I left out and out of nowhere the cardinal came and attacked him, similar to your video. Interesting behavior :-) glad to see someone else has witnessed this also
@@creatorwise Nice vid- I love birds but cardinals are my fave. A pair has been in my area for years now & I see their broods each season. I can explain why the male cardinal jumped on the jay. The rapid peeps that can be heard in the background are coming from a nearby baby or juvenile cardinal. He was simply being protective of his baby! I have seen mockingbirds & blue jays be WAY more aggressive than this when it comes to their offspring. I enjoy feeding & watching my backyard birds & learning so much about them! Thanks for posting.
@@creatorwise You are welcome! I have learned many species' baby bird sounds over the years & can differentiate between them all. For 2 weeks I got to see the parents feed him. (just 1 baby bird in there strangely) I even happened to be watching when he left the nest! This summer I had two cardinals at my feeder along with several bluejays. The cardinals only came by when the jays were not there but I also noticed I have zero small birds this fall when I use to have many all year round. The pair of cardinals have left but the jays are still around. I wonder if they drove the small birds away.
not sure why everyone is saying blue jays are aggressive, at least where i live it looks like their size is just startling the other birds and causing the feeder to swing, even my red-bellied woodpeckers are calm
The jay was testing the cardinal to see how far it could push into the cardinal's established feeding zone. The cardinal responded by letting the jay know that two feet away was OK but a foot and a half was too close.
That's not rare😄My cardinal, I named him Crimson, is very brave. Everytime he and the misses, Crimsetta, are eating a Blue Jay will skip the entire other 8 places where I put food and land right by him and yes Crimson will attack, but Blue Jay's are faster and usually get out of the way. In fact, when I whistle for Crimson he will come and get his walnut or cashew and Indigo and his crew will chase him into the bushes to try to steal it. They get on my nerves with that so now I chase them away. They used to be my pets too, hence I named them all Indigo, but I don't like their bully tactics. I don't chase them when they act right. The cardinal here is just fed up. Good for him.
Thanks for watching and for your special comment! Love your Crimson and Crimsetta! Also your naming your blue jays Indigo. If you ever get a chance, post a video of them, I would love to see it. Sounds like Crimson is well-fed as well as "fed up." Good for you.
"Little Red Boss" doesn't like anyone near his food, they're feisty little critters ..
