In the UK a pit maneuver is executed only when the officers are confident they can bring the vehicle to a stop without causing excessive harm. Unless he was driving straight for a crowd of people the police would not be able to justify potentially killing him.
Not only that but a pit manoeuvre at that speed on the Motorway could cause more harm to other road users and the other officers vehicles.
@@RJAthat's the point, on a motorway, minimal casualties at best, compared to it being in a built up area in a town or city. Besides it comes down to the judgement of the officers at the time of each and every pursuit. Case by case basis.
Pit maneuvers are banned in the uk I think I'm sure it got changed maybe last year or the year before

In the UK the idea is to apprehend the perp not kill him, if he started to pose an imminent danger to others they might take more drastic and immediate action but the emphasis is always try and preserve life every bodies life.

Pit maneuver is dependent on the risk level and reason for the pursuit. TPAC (tactical pursuit and containment) is the first safest method for a stop before going for a pit, or tactical contact in general. Loads of factors go into it
The penalty from the court was laughable, bearing in mind a prisoner only normally serves half the sentence. No wonder the public's faith in the justice system is falling away fast. And banning someone who is already banned quite frankly is idiotic.
That's because most judges ARE idiots.
Courts aren't able to give longer sentences given the prisons are so overpopulated, so many crimes are non-custodial as a result. Hopefully the next government will give the entire justice system more focus than the Tories have!!!

Even if the court can't give a custodial sentence due to prison overcrowding etc, they could give stronger non custodial sentences like bigger fines that actually impact the perpetrators and actually act as a deterrent. I'm sure there are also other non custodial punishments that could be given that aren't just a slap on the wrist if they cared as much about the victims rights as they do the criminals.
It is - but I don't think society is served by locking habitual speeders up for more than a few weeks - a spell in prison of ANY length would alter the outlook of any normal person. So I personally want to see them fined 6 months pay, or similar penalties. For those who don't work, the penalty would be DOING 6 months work and getting no pay for it.
JP PORSCHE and SPEED are synonymous. Pit manoeuvres are dangerous and cause a lot of harm, boxing in is much safer and usually results in less damage, in the UK they don’t use might is right, they use their brains instead.

Doing a PIT on the M6 or M11 (which has only 2 lanes and a hardshoulder) would likely result in multiple innocent casualties as well as the death of the suspect

When ever the Govt want to build new prisons those who were all in favour change their minds when they find out the prison is going to be built near them. I've lived next to Dartmoor Prison and had no problems at all.
Yep. The reason they didn’t pursue a Failing to Provide a Specimen (for drugs) is probably because any penalty he’d get would run concurrently with his other prison sentence. Correct me if I’m wrong 👍

Our country is different if the driver in the Porsche died or the vehicle hit someone else and they died while doing the manoeuvre the officer would be charged with either manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter

One thing very different from the US, which is factored into the whole driving mentality locally everywhere in the world, is the generally very different amount of road space (and quality) available for all man(o)euvers' safe use, including the tactical ones mentioned in the comments - the combination of traffic volume and road space/layout available is why they are much more sparingly used in the UK.
Officers with TPAC training can make "tactical contact" if it can be justified (e.g. if the driver is driving very dangerously and there is risk to the public they can make tactical contact) but PIT maneuvers are extremely dangerous especially on our roads. Generally speaking they will contain a moving vehicle by boxing it in hence "TPAC" = Tactical Pursuit and Containment which gives the vehicle nowhere to escape to and gradually slows it down with reduced risk to the public.
I think you answered your own question as to why they weren't using the PIT manoeuvre, "it probably would have ended someone's life". They prefer to utilise boxing in manoeuvres as they have much safer outcomes.

So.. you asked about a PIT Manoeuvre . In the UK, there's no such thing as a PIT Manoeuvre, police only have a few tactics to stop vehicles. Those are a TPAC box where they box the vehicle in, a Stinger / Spikestrip or Tactical Contact. Tactical Contact is basically where they drive into the other vehicle or hit the other vehicle in hope of disabling it to bring it to a stop. Hope this answers your question
Jls...I don't know what the situation is in the US, but the contempt shown towards the police here, by some people is absolutely staggering - and they get away with it time after time. There are many similar TV shows that show attitudes and behaviour which in my day, (I'm 79), would not have been tolerated. It was much more law abiding, and times were 'gentler' then. Mind, memories of the war were much more vivid than now.

PIT maneuvre is contraversial in UK because of the risk of safety to vehicles other than the fleeing vehicle. In the US there have been several fatalities to innocent vehicle drivers, not involved in the chase. 36 innocent vehicle occupants or by standers have been killed in the US since 2016, according to the Washington Post.
I watch the police interceptors regularly. You see all the hard work done by the police but the sentences are mostly inappropriate. Usually suspended sentences or sometimes points on a license that is none existent. Having said that the news reported recently says that jails will run out of space in a matter of days.

On another note, you may have some strange town names in the United States, but you'll never have a Heckmondwike.
Our roads tend to be smaller and therefore the traffic, both pedestrian and vehicle, is heavier. It makes pit maneuvers less viable due to the danger to the the public and police.
You should search for videos of successful boxes by the UK police. It's an effective and relatively safe way to stop drivers, often on motorways and only risks damage/harm to the supsect and police whilst leaving the public much safer
This happened in my neck of Leeds, It must have been late at night or early morning. Chances are the car was stolen & he might be wanted for other offences as well as this one.

The sentence for refusing a drink/ drugs test is as bad as if not longer than failing one! Driving whilst disqualified can lead to a prison sentence in the UK.
Sentences are always too short but our prisons are at capacity or over capacity, so people seldom get incarcerated for what most people would regard as fitting the crime. I never like to see the perpetrators get away from the police. They have a job to do, to enforce the law and prevent anarchy. He is a criminal. As soon as he started up that car he was breaking several laws. I hope his girlfriend had her eyes opened to the knob he really is.

Those Police Drivers are very highly trained for pursuit and you can see they make a chase like that look effortless.
I simply cannot understand why a driver like this is running away, the Police will eventually get him, even if they have to chase him until his fuel runs out, but he prefers to risk his own life and that of others. We all wanted him to be caught, he could easily have caused the death of innocents. Porsche was destroyed, or at least badly damaged, and he had no insurance! What an idiot.
Don't forget that he has to get insurance when he gets his licence back.

do you really think he will wait for a licence before he gets behind a wheel again.... he was already suspended when he drove this car. He will be driving again... no licence, no insurance, no regard or respect for anyone else.
Some disqualified drivers make the mistake of not applying for their licence back when the ban ends, and they assume they just get it back.
A Pit Manoeuvre is highly dangerous to perform on narrow roads not to mention the serious risks involved to the occupant of the suspect vehicle, the risks to fellow officers since UK Police vehicles aren't modded the way US police vehicles are, so they won't withstand a massive impact and then there's other road users to think about. If a pit manoeuvre was done, that could send the car spinning into oncoming traffic. A Box manoeuvre performed by Tactical Pursuit and Containment (TPAC) officer's is a tried and tested method resulting in successfully apprehending many suspects over the years and its done quickly and safely with the emphasis on safety for everyone on the road.
In the UK the "pit maneuver" is not used because the outcome is very unpredictable.
Welcome to "The Wild West Yorkshire". Unfortunately, a regular occurrence round here. Last year I went to Huddersfield where I spotted a purple Lamborghini in usual traffic. By 15:30 it was front page BBC news, it'd crashed and was on fire on the M62. (The same motorway).

Hello Joel. I wondered if I would spot someone I gave a reference to who became a traffic officer.
When I left Bradford my car insurance halved.
I commented before that at my new house I found a fugitive from a chase under my pear tree and rugby tackled him through next doors fence, then shouted to the police officers to collect him. I mended the fence.
There are a lot of idiots who drive dangerously in the Bradford area, and a fair few of them aren't insured. I had to provide a witness statement for an accident involving an uninsured driver a few years ago. (Fortunately, I had made notes in my diary at the time.)
I try to avoid driving through Bradford if I can help it. Its such a law abiding city.
"I don't know how he can refuse a drug test..." That is called innocent until proven guilty and is still the cornerstone of British justice. I once entered a one-way street in an unfamiliar area of London, whereupon the traffic cop stopped the traffic, got me to turn around and politely told me not to make the mistake again. No guns, no tasers no burly cops threatening divine vengeance on me.
With all the camera technology and helicopter use these days, it would be safer to monitor the vehicle and apprehend the driver at his/her destination. High speed chases are too dangerous, particularly when the driver doesn't care about the danger or the damage caused.
Nope-the sentence was far too short…as usual in the UK. The driver should have got 5 years and served every single day of it-not “half”. He was already disqualified so what’s to stop him getting behind the wheel again? NOTHING. Also, he should have got fined for refusing the drugs test-to be paid when he’d served his sentence! A nice ‘out of jail treat for the twerp’.
In the UK we keep a level head, why would you want to deliberately want to kill someone for a driving offence?

In Britain, we don't add the word "Department" to the title of a police force. It's just "West Yorkshire Police".

That was interesting to someone who is from West Yorkshire. If you look at the map you will see three towns with strange names: Liversedge, Heckmondrike and Cleckheaton - commonly known, jokingly, as Cleckheckmondsedge. Yes, the sentence is laughable.
It feels like a short sentence. I guess he was taken to hospital for blood tests, which would have confirmed if he was under the influence - and possibly a mental health assessment. The driving ban clearly isn't working, I'd have thought that a longer period of restricted movement and supervision would have been preferable in this case. I'm glad you got to do another police movie - I know you've been wanting to do so for a while 😉
Technically (though I am sure this is often ignored) hospital staff may not pass on to police the specific results of any test carried out on a person who has refused a police alcohol/drug test (as is his right); their role is confined to advising the police whether or not the suspect is fit to be interviewed/detained in a police cell.
They could have radio'ed ahead for spike strips
5:00 British police call the "PIT" (which in the US stands for Precision Immobilisation Technique) manouvre "Tactical Contact" and it's really a last resort because our police cars are just regular cars so they aren't reinforced or designed to take damage etc and don't have push bars on the front like US police.
UK police will do tactical contact manouvres if required, and they have done so a lot in the past (more likely in cases involving firearms or someone driving the wrong way down the motorway etc) but it's mainly to end a chase NOW to prevent further risk to people.
Also in the UK a PIT is easier to recover from because you just dump the clutch which keeps the engine running - one of the things with the PIT in the US is that with an automatic this will usually stall the engine, making it harder for the suspect to pull away again.
The Pit Maneuvers which are carried out in the US are easier to accomplish, Joel, as literally all your cop cars in most formats have Bull Bars fitted as normal to them . . . (And when they call in for back up - you'll see 10-20 of all kinds showing up, as well as choppers) . . . However, cars are now usually being made to have to deform slightly if hitting a pedestrian at the front even at slow speeds - so perhaps saving a life and not an instant death from it . . . Bull Bars though, only offer protection to the car, and not to the human being hit. So you will not see very many police cars over here with Bull Bars fitted to them nowadays. That's why they have to use the T-Pack method with dangerous drivers instead, if they have the cars available, and so can do that . . .
There is nothing special about the Yorkshire Police, same procedures all over England and Wales, Scotland is slightly different, each County (Yorkshire, Lancashire, West Midlands, Devon, Cornwall Kent, etc, all have slight variations and additions but The UK Home office is responsible for setting the standards. The PIT Manoeuvre is not normally used in UK, they usually box the car in with the cars they have available in the chase.

seems that what used to be a permanent ban from ever driving again for breaking 100mph now seems to be a short term ban, yes he has a 5 year ban, but thats ontop of thier already existing ban, funnily enough though it looks like banning them from driving had absolutely no effect,
The police cannot use force to take any sample for the purpose of drug testing. However, when arrested *for certain offences only* not giving a sample for testing is a separate offence punishable by a prison sentence of up to three months and/or a fine of up to £2,500. If the suspect refuses to provide a sample without a good reason, they should be told by the police officer that they could be prosecuted. (The officer did not do this in the footage shown.)
They say the offender was taken to hospital, and it *may* be (I'm not sure) that medical staff have greater leeway than the police in taking samples without consent.
On a separate matter, hats off to the calm professionalism of the officer radioing vital information gathered by the helicopter crew to the cops on the ground.

The UK is (currently) a signatory to the European Convention of Human Rights and one of the articles is a "Right to Life", so UK police have developed tactics, policies and procedures to consider this. When there's a threat to other people's lives, and it would be likely that it wouldn't kill the driver, then a pit manoeuvre would be considered.
In the UK we tend to use TPAC rather than the PIT as it is considered far safer to the pursued, police and the public. Occasionally the PIT is used but only rarely.

This is what my nephew does for a living. He's highly trained & cool in a crisis. My uncle was a traffic cop many years ago too.We are a family of excellent drivers with cool heads. My sister can park in the tightest of places & often gets a round of applause from men 😀

I think the box manoeuvre is considered safer, if somebody dies while you're trying to apprend them will see you investigated for the death

Don't worry Joel, I fully understand your anger. The pathetic sentences handed out to those who are convicted in this country are way beyond a joke, and for a man who was driving whilst already banned from so doing - a five year ban will mean absolutely nothing to him.
Problem is criminals will always have ways and means.
They will only do a pit maneuver if it is safe to do so. Also, unlike American police cars, they don't have the bars on the front of the vehicles to protect the car so damage will cost a lot of money

Police owe a duty of care to the public, even if they are criminals, so PIT manuoevers which are intened to induce a crash (wreck) are not permitted.
14 months is way to short of a sentence as he was probably released after a few months if he behaved well in Porridge.
We dont use the Pit manouver in the uk as decided its too dangerous to the criminal and the police want the driver alive.
Our police aren’t trained to pit and our cars aren’t build to do it

One BIG difference between US and UK - No guns drawn, not even tasers when they were chasing him on foot.
I'm not so sure about tasers. A police chase took place in Rotherham a few weeks ago and the taser was drawn.
They were trying to perform a ‘T Pack Manoeuvre’. One police car gets immediately in front of the Porsche, one closes up right behind it and a third police car drives alongside the chased vehicle, parallel to the driver. Effectively boxing the runaway car in and then all the police cars slow down to bring the chase to a stop. ‘Police Interceptors’ is a Channel 5 Show in the U.K. A similar show from Channel 5 is: ‘Motorway Cops’ also set in Yorkshire, if you want to investigate more of this type of content. The Police Drivers are all specially trained in High Speed Pursuits, but, at the same time a lot of the drivers they are chasing don’t make it easy for the police to catch them!

What you Americans don’t know is that we use the PUB manoeuvre in the UK. The PIT manoeuvre is a bit dated. After a few more pints the police causally drive to the house where the car is registered and then drive him / her to the station to issue the offence. Then the courts In this case 2 weeks probation and a fine of 50 quid to pay off for the next thirty years at one pound and 60 pence per a yearly payment plan.
The police very seldom (on tv anyhow) do pit manoeuvres. Partly I think because, if you watch enough of these chases, you’ll see that sometimes the culprit actually have not only other people in the car, but sometimes kids.

Here in Los Angeles, high speed police pursuits are an ordinary everyday event. Maybe the driver is practicing for a trip to L.A.?
I believe the Pit Manoeuvre wont work on front wheel drive cars which are the main cars in Europe, so use the TPAC Manoeuvre, and the Porsche is nearly twice the weight of the police cars.
That porsche is 4wd.
@@mikeh2006 yeah I know and don't think pit works with 4wd as most drive in rear wheel drive mode but European models mostly run in front wheel drive, so most police forces use TPAC...

Remember that the aerial shots were taken from an air support helicopter. That takes a lot of pressure off those on the ground because it's very difficult to hide from them, even on foot.
Our streets/ roads are a lot narrower in general than in the U.S. so we have to use more conservative/ safer methods.
Pits aren’t always effective outside USA, you have rear wheel driven cars which are perfect to pit. We have front wheel drive or 4x4 which are easier to correct and aren’t spun as easily
They don’t put manoeuvre often unless they have too because the cars aren’t built/made for that, they don’t have any reinforcements or bars at the front & they take damage easily, plus a lot of the traffic (highway) police drive German cars like BMW & Audi soo they are extremely expensive too repair
