It's amazing how they can put 4 generations of amazing Korean female vocalists in one song
Hyein: 15 years old
IU: 30 years old
Joe Won-sun: 51 years old
Patti Kim (Narrator): 85 years old
that's the power of IU!!! i even never portray tangwei in IU's mv at all~
i felt like ui was going to eventually collab with hyein from the minute iu heard her sing on her show 🫶🏼
One question, is the one called Hyein the one from NewJeans?
Daughters, mom, grandma. Generational collaboration 🤣 Patti Kim is Korea's legendary female singer. IU's casting ability is crazy 💜
In an interview IU said the song is about special women in our lives. IU sing about her mother, Hyein is about her first friend and Wonsun Joe about her role model
Yet somehow it all adds up to each other so well. Their parts are so complementing
in kpop where most songs about women talks about them being better than other girls. hearing this song is really a breath of fresh air.
Uh since when do most songs have women talking about them being better then other girls?? 💀 never heard of any.
@@Itzme_shravyablackpink's typa girl has a line "im not like the other girls at all" about other bp songs, i don't know. and got's step back has "step back step back silly girls" but that song also has a "girls bring it on" so it's kinda confusing
Hyein's voice sounds so good in this song. Not too high, not too low, really sublime.
I'm happy that Hyein said she wants to follow the steps of IU to be someone who can put her thoughts into words. She is right, IU has the most genius lyrics in the Korean industry. JYP said that he met only 2 artists who could understand the composer's idea and what he wanted one of them was IU.
@@kunalparmar873 ooh.. the fact that both hey and IU are in this together 😮
In Tang Wei's letter to IU, it was said that through the making of this music video and the line from the song, she wondered if her eyes were really like her mother's and she really wanted to check it out. She also said that she thought about how she imagined her mom in her younger years. And she realized that this image is not clear, because she was not part of her life then and she only knows it from her father's words and photos. On the set she imagined that she met her in her younger years and suddenly realized that her mother was just like her - young, beautiful and shining on stage. I think both the song and the video express that the relationship between mom and daughter is a special bond. Something beyond friendship and beyond love. Something special. One thing continues the other. When you're a kid you're sometimes unable to understand why mom acts a certain way. You know and see mom from one side. But when you grow up, you understand her better. Because you start to see the world from her perspective. And this story repeats itself again only with another child and another mom. A amazing song and music film on the theme of the connection of women in the family and their sometimes difficult relationships on the way to understanding each other.
Big shoutout to Hyein. She's just debuting, but she gonna have a wonderful career. I cannot forgot IU's expression while Hyein was singing at IU palette. That was the exact moment
@tesiii I think they meant her debuting as a solo artist. This is her first song collaborating without the other members. So, it kinda counts as one.
In the MV credit they even mentioned Hyein’s vocal director. I guess she still needs a lot of guidance while working with other veteran singers in this song but still well done to her! Love every part of this song and the music video🥹
Wait but I don't see hyein can you tell me where she is? (Not hating I can't find hyein that's it)
IU & Hyein's voice chemistry is already heavenly but adding the varsetile actress Tang wei as the female lead in the MV is just fireeeee 🔥
How can wverything be perfect about This Album? The Vocals, The Collaborations, The MVs and The Lyrics. IU really is legendary and My Genius Maknae Hyein slayed so much. Her Vocals are really special♡
I really hope Hyein gets more popular
Her visual is crazy & her voice is genuinely lovely
It's not just a simple MV, it's like a movie trailer.
We need IUTV for the filming of all MVs in this album 🥰🤭
Omg Tang Wei acted so good in this MV. Her storytelling eyes are filled with emotions and stories...
Tks so much, you helped me to understand the story as well as meaning in this MV ❤

I'm actually a sucker for a time slip drama, the one that about a child who went to the past and meet the younger version of their parents, and finally understand their parents better, like twinkling watermelon & my perfect stranger are among my top dramas. And to know that iu also did that kinda story in a song and mv is wild for me. She literally executes everything in a freaking song, and the mv really complete the song, makes me understand the song better. At first listen, I already like the song even without understanding the back story yet, but after the disclosure of the mv, i like it much more. IU, you are such an amazing storyteller.
Hyein's vocals on this song show how talented she really is and everyone stanning NewJeans is sleeping on her so hard 😭
I love that IU was so smitten by her voice when NJ attended IU's show that she had to get Hyein's vocals in one of her songs!
This MV is about a complicated yet fulfilling story between a mother & daughter. IU is the mother here. When it's HYEIN's lines, that is the POV of a daughter & same as Joe Won Sun in the perspective of a mother. In the last few seconds of the MV, which shows different generations of Korean women, and for this part, the Narration by Patti Kim (SK Legend artist who alrdy retired in her '80s) comes in.
@@jords533 The description is lyrics in the song + the description of the genre, this person is right, its not only a complex story between mother and daughter relationships, it is also about complex female relationship, how we are the product of all the women before us, its a love letter to all women, of all generations
This! From the lyrics and the MV, I can totally see the generational division IU portrayed. I love how the lyrics during Hyein is in a younger female POV, more innocent and not knowing the feelings they have. Then in Joe Won Sun's lyrics, she's definitely more matured and embraced her feelings, whatever it is.
And i love olithecat's description, "its a love letter to all women, of all generations"
Usually it's IU's vocals that elicit so many emotions and goosebumps out of me. But when she adds the visuals and emotional stories through the types of thought-provoking music videos as she has in the four mv's related to "The Winning," the combinations are extremely powerful. This one pretty much had me on sensory overload, again. Shoutout to Hyein for her wonderful voice and performance as well. More evidence to me that IU is one of the best all-around singers, songwriters, actresses, producers, and creative minds in my lifetime. I'm 68.
I'm almost 64 years old too! IU is an all-rounder and a special woman.😊

IU is such a rare artist. Every MV song she puts out invokes specific feelings. I didn't expect to like "Shh..." to be so atmospheric and ambient, breathing a sense of sophistication - so ripen with restrained emotions. Perhaps it's my preference for R&B sound. As I admire those tracks in this album, dare I say this is my favorite song from her in this comeback.
Seriously, this song is meant for adults.
The slower cadence works better for story-telling. It's perfect. :)

I didnt notice the switch from IU's to Hyein's vocals because of how silky their vocals are and also bc i was so invested in the MV
When she became a mother, she realized why her mother had locked her up, and they reconcile. As they grow older, they become friends. Eventually, the relationship will continue in their next lives.
But why they locked each other up? Out of dear love? What does that mean?
Hyein's voice so soothing. so is IU's.
Petition for a director to cast IU and Tang Wei for a film 🎥 that takes them both to Cannes again 🙏💗
YES! I would LOVE to see them do a movie together. Add Zhang Ziyi & Michelle Yeoh as part of the cast & it would be a dream come true. The best Asian actresses in a movie together.
Speechless. Amazing!
Is the “song” saying there is a story?
Is it because we as daughters never get to call our mums by name, she has named her as shh? That’s so poignant and bittersweet. It could be about empowerment.. and I think knowing IU, I’d like to see its also a tribute and public show of admiration for all mums and grandmums- including hers :’)
This is called The Winning album for a reason! IU has been the reason for me to dive into kpop. Since then I have come to appreciate more of other kpop artistes and groups in their hard work and music too. But IU is really on the another level of music creation. No wonder many kpop hoobaes look to her as their role model.
And reading Tang Wei’s letter to IU again solidifies my thought that she is not only highly respected as an artiste but also as another fellow human living in this time.
IU has long time established she writes songs not only to make it trendy or simply make a statement… I think anyone can make a statement today - like all of us here. but you can see and hear that she wants to tell a narrative, an idea, a perspective that are also good, beautiful, empowering, full of light and love. Thank you IU, what a refreshing album that marks the start of your 30s. :)
Now I just hope I’ll get to see you live this year!!!
after ruminating on the lyrics.... wow I love it even more. The complicated levels of emotions and sentiments toward the mum and daughter relationship is very real and raw. Ah... what an art. IU's music is one that you could just take time to digest further and appreciate, and interact with your own life. :)
I love 'Shh..' concert live vocal. Its energetic and heroic vibe.

점점 이해가되고, 사실 엄마가 나를 사랑한거고, 저도 엄마가 사랑한것 같은데, 이 관계가 참 묘해요.. it’s not about friend, not about love.
I had the same experience. As I get older and have become a mother, my perspective has changed a lot. I try to focus on her positive traits and appreciate her as a person.
I think the mobius strip isn't a symbol for infinity, it's a symbol for two sides that are really one. That ambiguity of where something ends and another thing starts,,,where one person ends and another side of their personality begins.
In the narration lyrics we have the translation "known by everyone and no one at the same time." A mobius strip has the contradiction that there's actually only one side, but it presents as two, there's an illusion or "mask" hiding something deeper, and these lyrics point out a similar contradiction between the known and unknown sides of this person.
What's the unknown side? The imagery in the MV and more importantly the acting and way the two characters (IU and Tang Wei) interact with each other is through eye contact, a whisper, and a revelation. It's this dance of "do you see me? do you see beneath my mask, my layers?" and once you feel like they do, you start to wonder if you can unveil whatever secret you have to them. Something you've hidden so securely and locked away so completely that you fear anyone finding it out. But there's some similarity there, "my eyes are just like hers" and you're drawn to them, to this idea that someone could see you and you can share your dark secret, "a happy nightmare."
This dance almost feels to me like a spider weaving a web,,, not to catch it's prey necessarily but to be in control of the web, to have bases covered and traps laid to keep you out of trouble. We see IU crawling. The lyrics describe being lured by "Long footseps." We see Tang Wei "jump" close to IU and stare at her with an unnerving smile. "Haha, nowhere to run, I see you." It's this "overarching presence" that's "forever a step ahead" that sees you despite you trying to hide ("I stay silent")
Take a look again at the way the characters interact BEFORE sharing their secrets. There's knowing smiles, hesitating eye contact, and holding back tears. It seems like they feel caught, or found out, that maybe this fear of being discovered is finally coming to pass. At first there's a reluctance to admit it -- see how slowly Tang Wei first meets IU's intense gaze. Then a resignation.
Have you ever held a deep secret? Something you fear being judged for if found out? I'm not talking about anything illegal but maybe something psychological, something related to your identity. And maybe that eats at you. You've imagined it time and time again what you would do if someone found out.
But what if someone saw behind your mask without you saying anything? Maybe that person really sees you. Maybe you can reveal this secret which has eaten at you and be free from all those pent up fears. And that's what we see: revealing a daughter that's no longer there, revealing a twin that's dead (? or kidnapped in the boot of the car). My interpretation of the twin is that it's repressing part of their personality.
Again, the way these are revealed hint that they're deep secrets. IU isn't even looking into the trunk when Tang Wei's opening it, she's looking at Tang Wei. Tang Wei isn't looking into the cellar door when IU opens it, she's looking at IU with a smile and tears in her eyes. And that smile has changed from the unnerving "ha ha I see what you're hiding" to "oh silly, you're still human." It's a beautiful portrayal of seeing the person behind the trauma. IU's character only has photos of this person as a kid. We can only presume she's passed or no longer in her life. And holding that in and presenting a brave face to the world can tear apart a person. Finally sharing that side of the mobius strip, tearing away that illusion of two sides leaves you feeling so vulnerable. And we have Tang Wei accepting and smiling at IU's character. "Oh silly, that's what you've been hiding?"
What we get at the end scene between them comes off as redemption. Someone on their knees reaching out, then being lifted up and hugged signifies redemption arc. Remember they just revealed their secret to each other, and now it's IU's turn to accept Tang Wei. To hug and accept that they are still human. That despite this contradiction in their head that they're misunderstood, that they're hiding half of themselves, IU's hug is her saying "you're still human, you're still complete." When someone sees you as you, when they can take in the whole picture, there's no more mask. There's no two sides. And like the mobius strip you realize that you are you completely, one and whole.
That's such a liberating experience, I think that's why we get the narration at the end. To encourage sharing these stories, these characters who live a life feeling misunderstood, trapped, and like they're not fully themselves, but after sharing their secrets with a trusted one, they're liberated.
I feel like i'm just watching a movie when i reading this, damn, such a beautifull explanation
You've just gutted me in the best possible way. Both IU and you perfectly illustrated my own relationship with my mother. Hopefully it's still unfinished.
This is a very beutiful and deep interpretation! I would also like to share mine a little bit, a little different perspective on the twin part.
For me IU's and Tang Wei's characters portray mother and daughter respectivelly. At the start of the MV you can see and old picture of IU with her daughter and the apartment itself is quite old (old fashioned) as well, but when we see the street on the outside where IU is walking near shopwindow, we can understand that this is around our time. Tang Wei's style says the same thing to me since it's different from photos and IU's flashback.
"Some long time ago,
She hid her mother away"
For me Tang Wei is a daughter who came back to her mothers apartment, maybe for the first time in years. And IU's character in the same apartment is like the memories that are tied to it, warm memories you can't escape or run away from (in this case memories associated with mother). "She hid her mother away" in my opinion might refer to child's anger for mother, not understanding and not wanting to understand her point of view. To me it also could mean that after growing up and losing her mom (here i'm judjing from actresses' ages and IU's quite young looks), daughter may have hid all the memories deep within herself. So seeing her mother again, coming back to her mother's apartment once again and even talking to her (whispering), this time not as a child to mother, but as a woman to a woman, helped Tang Wei to finally understand and/or fully accept her mother (and all the memories) afer all these years. And opening to these memories and feelings made her more complete person, since after this we might see her smile a bit, in contradiction to the start of the MV. So I think that the light under this kind of wooden hatch was all those forgotten, all those hidden deep inside memories and all the tied to this place memories associated with mother.
"She was my friend long ago.
I hid her away, too."
Now we see Tang Wei looking at IU (in the car), I see it as she now understands her mother better, as if she became alive once again, young and beautiful as her daughter is now, as if they could talk to no end just like old friends. But if daughter opened to her, now it's IU's turn to unveil her secrets. And so, for me the twin symbolizes all the love, care and desire to protect her child, such strong that she (IU) eventually tries to hide her daughter from all the bad things in the world (which migh've led to misunderstandings and anger). This opening also might symbolize all the impurities and imperfections of mother she's finally willing to share with her daughter.
Taking each other's hand, looking in each other's eyes and hugging each other to me stands for finally forgiving and accepting each other with all the imperfections and impurites, becoming complete with themselves and with the other side. They saw each others naked truth and once again became a family.
In this case I think narration might refer to widespread of this kind of relationship/problem ("old tale"), where a lot of people might find themselves in a similar situation ("Known by everyone"), "And no one at the same time" because not many are ready to open up and go through expirience characters in MV went throug. And the scene we see during the credits supports that point for me.
I liked very much your thoughts on secrets and liberation, I strongly support them. Your interpretation is truly beautiful and in my opinion deserves more recognition in this comment section and even beyond when it comes to "Shh..".
IU doesn't look like she's in her 30s at all. She is so beautiful and very cute
I wish Hyein was part of this mv❤
Hear me out, IU’s voice gives 🍓 vibes (sweet and timeless)
Hyein’s voice gives 🍒 vibes (tart and rich)
And Won-sun’s voice gives 🍊vibes (mellow yet powerful)
Guys i guess, they are talking about ‘friends’ when they say (F) and ‘lovers’ when they say (L). In the song, mother-daughter relationship in the MV
@@haechanchannie2356 yes, they re-uploaded the MV because they spelled HYEIN's english name wrong
Hyein is so emotional. . she will be the greatest soloist can't wait ❤
IU and Tang Wei must be in drama together.
IU x Hyein x JoeWosun x Patti Kim 4 voices that makes these song incredible and amazing..
I love how it was IU & Hyein in a song together. Hyein has made it this far to collab with one of the biggest K-pop soloists & I’m so proud of her. This mv is honestly so beautiful & the song has such a deep meaning.
Tang Wei is so beautiful & IU is a good singer
Such a beautiful song with different generations of women featured. IU is a genius lyricist!! The way she described the mother and daughter relationship is so clever and relatable.
Hyein has an angelic voice and crazy stage presence. She born to be that girl ❤
i really truly admire IU and her embodiment of womanhood. Although most women would use their sexiness & beauty to feel empowered, IU would flaunt her brain, artistry, musicality and talent. Her music, art and even choices in films/movies doesn't add to the objectification of women. Even in this song, it was focused on the qualities of womanhood in different generations with different roles that makes them unique, special and connected. I am always in awe with her lyricism.
My favorite lyrics of her in this song 2:50
Like an old soliloquy
that has never stopped,
here’s to those women who remain an enigma
forever etched somewhere in my time
you should watch IU interview with her mom now, those lyric is to described her mom. it was great interview though, i began to admire not just IU, but her mom also now XD
IU does "add to the objectification of women." She 1) uses her "beauty" and "cuteness" to appeal to men, and 2) depicts women as objects of male desire and validation. This is evident in her MVs and songs, which frequently feature her singing to or about men
Why do we compare all the women who are killing it? Comparison broods insecurity. Putting IU in a high pedestal while degrading others is the point of the song as IU has been compared to those before her. And those women have to somehow “kill and burry” a part of their inner self just to “appeal” better. Women are all an enigma whatever HER name is. Ji-Eun’s brave for putting out this feminist song.
Hyein’s voice 🥹🫶🏻
IU and Tang Wei look so amazing, they should cast in drama together
I just found out about Jo Woo Sun, a unique singer with a stunning voice. finally found out about JWS. She's really interesting. So far I've only watched IU and nothing else. IU, u r the godmother of kpop.
It really amaze me how you come up with SHH. The F and L. If you type F in a keyboard you'll get (ㄹ) and if L you'll get (l) and if you put them together you'll get(리) Lee💜. The one who entered concert halls with flutterd clothes and flashing lights, exits by only wearing comfortable clothes and just being true to herself. Known by everyone and no one at the same time. Her name is Shh(이지은)
@@dienz I am not trying to argue but thats just what I get when I tried to search it in google. And I know how it spelled also 🙂💜
It expressed the heartbreaking illegitimate child, the empty sorrow, the female psychology of strange affinity, and the unique characteristics of women who embrace and protect past pain.
here again after i watched iutv
Jieun being interviewed by her mom i finally understand and appreciate the song more💕🔥🥰🥹
IU and Hyein vocals are no joke! They sounded so heavenly and so beautifully! I love u girls so much!😊💜
This song and mv are among the reasons why IU’s music, just like her bff Taehyung’s, for me go beyond k-pop. They both create pure art full of symbolism and meaning and their music and vision is unique.
I want to know my mom as just her, without the title of daughter, wife or a mother to define her. However, infront of me she has only ever shown her role as a mother. I think it is because 'mom' has become a part of her soul that she cannot do without Infront of her daughter. When I think of home I think of mom. She is a little silly and definitely a flawed human being but the warmth she brings is something nobody else will ever be able to give me in life. She is my best friend, mom, companion and the one person I am sure I could always count on. I love you mom, always.
Sorry, just ignore me. I was just venting.
This song is a genius … so thought provoking as well on how we treated our mothers
This reminds me of the quote “As a woman I have so much empathy for my mother, but as a daughter, I have so much anger. “
Wow I've never heard that outside my own head before. Funny how we always think we're the only ones. Who said it?
@@CleoHarperReturns It’s from a poetry book called ‘My father’s eye, my mother’s rage’ by Rose Brink.
