As I commented on another John Martyn song post, the only artist I can compare him to is the late, great Richie Havens. Kindred spirits, they seem to me. Both wrote, sang, and played (though in very different styles) straight from the honest depths of their soul. No pretense. No fake hero image. Both ministering to us in music. God bless them both.
Me too! Saw John 5th May 2006 Cambridge ..jus saw my diary entry... "I'm in the rainbow cafe, around the corner from the corn exchange with a ticket forJM in my bag!!!" Was thrilled!😊
There's a strange sense of beauty to this recording... He's sat down, He can't really walk because he's in so much chronic pain, his body is failing him, the drugs and alcohol of his younger years are really punishing him in older age but this beautiful song and that magnificent voice still rings out despite it all.
Anyone implying you can't have a respect for music as varied as Rammstein to John Martyn has never actually grasped what music is all about, and I say that as a professional musician and live sound engineer of 14 years very serious experience. I felt like someone turned a light on and my world became a little brighter when I discovered this man's truely heartfelt music. Yesterday was a very sad day but thanks to him the musical world is a better one. May he Rest In Peace. :-(
@@krollpeterl'm agree with you. Strange, at the end of the 60's, at "Les Cousins" sometimes he was playing blues with already the guitar technique but not the soul. At the end of his life, he was always a great guitarist with the voice and the soul of a bluesman.
Uno dei più completi musicisti in assoluto. Chitarra suonata in modo inconfondibile, voce che sa trascinarti nei suoi testi avvolgenti.john patrimonio dell'umanità.
Love the video, particularly since it wasn't long afterwards until John's death. It captures the sprit of the man: "You'll never be able to gig again, Mr. McGeachie", said the doctor. "Are you f*****g kidding me?, said the patient. A true one-off, and I miss him.
I met him in the English market in Cork, not long before he died. He was on his own and of course in his chair. He was very friendly and polite.I asked him about new stuff and he told me he was working on lots of things, being very productive. I hope that this new stuff sees the light of day.................
Find the reworked version of 'Another way to cry' I think it's on Sweet little mysteries, but can be found on ITunes. Every time I listen it overwhelms me. I saw him a few times in the 70s, over here in California he is not well know and I take great pleasure in turning people on to him.
Yeah, that was a bit wrong, I probably meant to say he was probably heavily influenced/brainwashed by phil collins in the 80s. Although you do have ramnstein amongst your favorite videos, so I don't really think you are entitled to have an opinion on John Martyn to be honest.
because I'm entitled to my opinion. I love John Martyns music, not all of it, but most of it, I'm just expressing my opinion of his later live shows and recordings, which are at times, pretty terrible!
One of my all time favourite videos of John. He was timeless. Forever on his own frequency ❤️
There isn't a person on the planet who's voice hits me deeper than his. Many thanks for posting.
Like wise equal to Chino for dif archery and another for some other reasons...they're all about the love...

I saw John in Cambridge(from where I am) in 1989. Fucking brilliant. I've never stopped buying his music ever since.

He was as good as I'd ever seen him that night. Blues innit. You've got to live it to sing it.
Couldn't have said it better mate, thank you for the recording
made me cry....
I'm practically sure that John Martyn would have never changed his way of life. Not very funny for those to close to him. It was his choice.
Yes, well put and so true.
The man morphed , his genius is second to none……adored this man all my life ❤️
🙏🏽
Adore yourself instead of others. That's what John did...
I love how he played his heart till he passed away. True legend!

flesh is gone..but the soul is eternal ..and this man's soul just conquers evil !
Right til the end, he never lost that sense of soul. God, I miss him.
I wasn't even born in 1980 but I think this guy is fantastic.
Wonderful. Yes
Fantastic version, my favorite. Rip John
John was one of the most soulful performers I have ever heard. I hope he is in a better world now where he lives like a prince.
His voice just got better and better.
He was on his top vocally in the 80's, to my opinion. That's not saying he could not sing anymore thereafter.

All this time has gone but beauty remains..
An oasis of a musician in a weary world.Rest easy, John.Grateful thanks for your music.
R.I.P. Thanks for the tunes!
The man is bringing tears to my eyes. A cactus amongst the desert of the throng. Wherever you are, may you never....
I first saw him in 1980 and he's been just as brilliant every time since.

It's a sad day. I'm gutted.
Are more songs from this concert on UA-cam?
Sorry, I've no idea - I'm just a punter who was lucky enough to be at this show. If there is a DVD of that tour I want it too.
not looking his best but still plays like an angel
I heard it once and know it was the truth.
Mister Ambiguity.😎

Sorry, it's called simply "Ways to cry" from 'Classics".
