For me the rivalry between Sri Lanka and Australia is the greatest I've ever witnessed. It's a shame it isn't really there anymore. Australia were the best team and Sri Lanka the most exciting team. Sri Lanka (and maybe Pakistan) were the only team who could beat Australia on their day. Those days players played for their team not their records. Hence many Sri Lankan players like De Silva, Ranatunga, Gurusinha remain criminally underrated
Ah the great memories of the aussie Tri series, it was always a highlight of the summer for me, with exciting crowds, great matches and players. Now its all gone, for the sake of glorified back yard cricket.
This Sri lankan team 12 months before they would be the number 1 team in the world. What a revolution they were with their approach to the first 15 overs.
If it was controversial, two things would have done that: Muralitharan's action (and some umpires no-balling him) and Sri Lanka rewriting the one-day game by being so aggressive in the early overs.
It was a controversial summer. The Sri Lankans were accused of ball tampering in the First Test (they weren't, the WACA turf was scuffing the ball) and never really got an apology, then Muralitharan was no-balled in the Second Test. By the end of the summer relations between the Australians and Sri Lankans were very testy. To make it worse, the Australians subsequently got death threats and were not pleased by the assurances for their safety to play in Sri Lanka for the World Cup (which immediately followed) so they (and the West Indians) both forfeited their games against SL in the World Cup.
@@irfanbardgujar8612 In the 1996 World Cup, the West Indies and Australia were concerned about security in Sri Lanka and both forfeited their group stage games rather than travel to Colombo, where there had been bombings just before the cup.
Good old cricket. Probably the best times for cricket. Srilanka certainly were the TEAM watch.

As good as that Sri Lankan team was, if Brian Lara was there the Windies make the finals easily.

Where are the Brian Lara
He didn't play in the series due to a blow up with the West Indies board. Tony Jones explains that at the top of the vid.

there's a hand on the scale for the home team anywhere you go. was a lot worse back then, too.
