    You are correct, these Sanyo machines sold in huge numbers. I used to work at Television Parlour based in Fareham Hampshire. They used have 500 units delivered every Wednesday (delivery day) and would sell out by the weekend usually. They used to retail at £169 at the time. Before the VTC5000, VTC5150 they used to get 500 units of the VTC5300 etc & VTC9300 every week and sell out at £169 each.

    Thanks for the helpful video! My mum picked up one of these 1982 VTC 5000-II units for free, along with the original manual and pause remote! It even came with a stack of Beta tapes (recordable and movies) and even the original L-250 tape bundled with the machine! It's in amazing cosmetic condition but has some quirks. Will be replacing the belts with the help of this video. Despite being nearly 40 years old, the belts were only lightly stretched. I'm so used to servicing dozens of VCRs that seeing the insides of a Beta machine for the first time in person was an amazing sight! As with the tape you used, these Beta tapes are also quite mouldy. I'd recommend opening it up to clean it off, as mould buildup on the heads wouldn't be ideal.
    For anyone else taking one apart, that black strip that sits atop of the cassette cover at the start is also clipped in at the centre, and not just stuck on. You need to push something like a screwdriver on the underside of the cassette cover to unclip it, which it can then be pulled off.

    • @video99couk

      You should certainly start by replacing the belts, there are only two. It may need a reel idler, which is a bit harder to source these days, I had a stock until last year but now have run out.

    Just want to say thanks for your info on the torque fix for the VTC-5000 (Replacing D6 and R49) The player would stop part way though the tape as there was not enough torque on the take up spool. Your fix worked a treat ! Thanks, I'd have never worked that out for myself :-)

    Memories! My first VCR was the Sanyo VTC5000, that I got cheap from an ex-rental clearance dealer in around 1989 when I was doing my BTEC in electronics. I enjoyed tinkering with that as well as a Sony SL-C6UB that a relative gave me, that machine was a tank, the solenoids made very satisfying clunk sounds. Unfortunately they are long gone, I eventually transitioned to VHS, as much as I appreciated the better qualities of Betamax.

    Great video - totally agree with your comments on the engineering (as I discussed in my own video last year) not only WELL built but very cleverly engineered down to cost without making any part of it rubbish. We could learn a lot from that approach today.
    Would be great to find out the fault in that second machine. Maybe dry joints as you mentioned earlier, or cap faults on the syscon board? I had to totally recap the power supply and the servo board on mine to get it to work.

      I may have another go with the second machine, and I've actually found a third VTC5150 in my store room. But this video was quite long enough already! You're right, it was a clever design. They eliminated all solenoids to keep down cost and weight. I once modified one for cable remote control.

    I Already had a Sanyo M20 (Front loader). I Bought it a probably 15 years ago at a garage sale. Sort of worked, but not well. Three weeks ago I bought a Sanyo 5005 (Similar to the 5000) at an Auction for $10. A bargain as these things just NEVER come up anywhere in New Zealand. Even on New Zealand's main online auction site 'Trademe', they are never seen. After watching this video I purchased two belt kits. Both specifically for each unit (2 different kits). $20 per kit from a place called Star Components in N.S.W. Australia. This is about $22 New Zealand Dollars. I did the belts on both units and they now both work well. Thanks heaps.

    Thanks so much for this comprehensive video. I'm just trying to resurrect my pair of 5000s. I now have a good idea how to fix the problems I have, which you've covered. One works well mechanically but has no picture, the other has a reasonable picture but chews up tapes when unlacing.

    Hi, Colin. I have two Sanyo betacords. The VTC 5010-II who only plays perfect without the lid and the VTC 5300PB who plays perfect only when its warmed up (otherwise stops / shuts off). What could it be and where could i find a repair instruction ?
    Kudos from The Netherlands.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  3 роки тому

      These are going to require proper repair by someone who is familiar with electronics. The VTC5010-II is probably the easier one to resolve. The VTC5300 probably has bad capacitors somewhere and that's going to take some time to resolve. It's not possible to diagnose by remote control, someone really needs to work on them properly.

  • @ItsDoctorAmatic
    @ItsDoctorAmatic 10 місяців тому +1

    Been fighting with a VTC 5300P for some time now which simply refuses to transport the tape. For some reason the motor doesn't want to push the gear in place to run the takeup spool in simple play mode - it seemingly doesn't transport the tape when unlacing as well, making exactly the mess you mentioned (without a tape the spool does rotate there). Lacing works perfectly well after changing the belts but that's pretty much about it. It's quite frustrating. Unfortunately the 5000 and 5300 look almost the same inside but they're quite different about that. Wish I could get it to run without the carriage for debugging, but it simply won't do even when pessing all kinds of switches that theoretically connect while pusing carriage it into place.
    Won't give up on it, but at the moment I don't have a clue where to start. But your video was still a big motivation to keep on going, thanks!

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes the 5300/5400 have an older and more complicated mechanism. It's been some years since I worked on one. Keep trying with fooling it into thinking there's a tape in there so you can see what's happening.

    • @ItsDoctorAmatic
      @ItsDoctorAmatic 10 місяців тому

      @@video99couk Finally managed to get it running again!
      Turned out the last big problem was a stuck idler (or whatever it is called in the 5300). After some cleaning and oiling everything's working fine now.
      Unfortunately now the screen is rather noisy and a bit shaky, even loses color at times, where it wasn't before I took care of the sluggish mechanics. Very scared that I've messed up the head (or even alignment) somehow. Tried cleaning it with the help of the PALsite guide, but didn't do anything. Noticed that the picture problems (especially the color related ones) are getting better after fast forwarding, rewinding or simply stopping it for a second and then pressing play again. Maybe the tape transport is slighty too slow and results in this - but to be honest I don't know if that makes even sense technically. I'd hate to give up on it after working so long on it but at this point I'm really out of clues.

  • @Embracing01

    Hi, do you know what maybe causing a buzzing sound on my VTC500 on playing of the tapes?. I've heard suggestions it could be due to the bad tape (something to do with the HiFi, though there is no HiFi on the tapes or the machine), or maybe the connection I'm using (I'm using the aerial cable connected to an old 14" TV at the moment to my computer), or could be the tracking or a capacitor problem, but I don't think it's the tracking, not sure about the machine itself. I would hope it's just the tapes and not the machine.

If i am touching the adjustable resistor for the AFC (VR17) on the VD-1 board with a screw driver without adjusting it , the color is there. After putting it away the color is gone again. • @video99couk

    Great video! I have a 5000 and a 5550 (Which you also seem to have at the end of this video). I also have a 5350 which is the PAL+SECAM version of the 5300. The mechanism in these earlier models is very complex indeed. Out of curiosity, where did you find the 5550? It's kind of a rare machine but it was sold here in Greece because we used SECAM back then.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  5 років тому +1

      I've had the 5550 for quite a few years, I think it was an eBay find from the days that these things were worth very little. Yes it is a rare one, and I've found that this machine is sometimes capable of much better playback on very worn tapes than any other machine I have (and I have a lot of Betas!). I suspect the filter design in the RF circuits is different to the PAL machines and somehow this gives it the edge on bad tapes. The 5300, 5400 etc. are much heavier and a the mechanism has a lot more parts to wear out.

      @@video99couk I compared the luma/chroma (VD-1) board of my 5000 with my 5550 and the 5550 uses Sony ICs all over the place so that explains the little difference in the picture quality. My 5350 blew its power supply recently. Do you have any spare boards from scrapped 5300s? I took a look on the schematics of the 5300 and the PSU board is identical with the 5350. I also need belts and idlers for my 5000 and 5550. Let me know if you have enough of them left in stock. Hi, I have two identical Sony VHS recorders, one that suddenly stopped working after I put a tape in and started to rewind it, and when I came back a few second later the machine was dead, no power. I tried the fuse but still nothing. Very strange considering I have never had this happen on any Beta or VHS recorder I have owned. I heard that it could've been due to a capacitor. The other VHS recorder I have powers up but it will chew tapes up when loaded. Is there anyway of taking the parts from one machine to another?.

    I bought a VTC 5150 last year after seeing in your video that it’s a better machine than the VTC 5000 as it doesn’t have that bug as carried over from previous machines. I recently bought another Betacord, this time it’s one that I’d never heard of. Murphy MVR 7007R it’s a good clean machine that in time will need it’s belts changing as it’s running a little slow. It has colour pause, rewind and fast forward search.

      Some VTC5150 machines still have the bug, they must have fixed the firmware part the way through production. I've not seen that Murphy one but it looks like it may be related to the VTC5300/5400 which is an earlier model. Some Sanyo model numbers ran backwards.

    Having just repaired one of these (with the help of Palsite) with various faults, if anybody is struggling with unstable output on the video output terminal I changed C108 on the bottom board (it's located on the edge of the board, 4.7uF 16v) not *C 1080* as listed on Palsite as that number didn't correlate to anything, this made a massive improvement.
    I had a very poor and unstable mono image, annoyingly I then twiddled some pots to try and cure it, so the whole thing needed realligning afterwards,
    Don't then do what I did and short out the regulator IC about ten seconds after getting it to playback better than it did new...

    Thank you for your guide on replacing the 2 belts. I have successfully replaced the belts, the old ones were stiff so definitely needed replacing. The cassette now plays fine, also rewinding etc. The only issue I have now is sometimes the tape doesn’t fully unlace, I’ve cleaned the rollers with IPA and it OK but I’m still concerned it’s going to mangle my tapes. One thing I noticed was, when you stop the tape and it doesn’t unlace fully, if I rewind or forward the tape is unlaces and I am safe to remove the cassette.

    Commenting on this video again because I found something intereseting regarding the syscon bug. So, about a year ago or so I bought a service manual for the VTC 5550, and it says the following:
    "If the take-up reel base rotation sensor detects that the reel base has stopped during any of the PLAY, REC, F-SEARCH or R-SEARCH modes, the capstan motor, the reel motor and the video head will stop. *If the sensor detects that the reel base has stopped during any of the F FWD, REW, or UNLOADING modes, the reel motor will stop, and the loading motor will rotate in the clockwise direction. The loading ring will then rotate in the counter clockwise direction and, once loading is completed, the VCR will enter the STOP mode.*
    So, did Sanyo designed these machines to behave like this on purpose, or was it really a bug in the code that they didn't bother to change until a couple of years later? It doesn't indeed make any sense to lace the tape when the take-up spool won't rotate!
    PS: I put the important part in bold. It's not in bold on the manual.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  9 місяців тому +1

      It just doesn't seem logical to lace up in the condition of reel drive failure. It's the last thing you would want to do, because now you have tape out that you can't retract. I reckon it's a bug.

    I've spoken to different people who work on these machines about the problem I have with my 5000, and they seem to think there's a problem with the loading belt. I took the metal cover off that is above the loading belt and heads. The head drum spins when you press a button, but since tape doesn't come out of the cassette and lace around the heads I'm guessing something is jammed. All idlers and rubber belts seem OK, so I don't know what the problem could be. I emailed one person with a few photos but he never replied back.

      If the loading motor (back right of deck) is spinning but the deck isn't lacing up, then the loading belt is much the most likely cause. It's a little fiddly to get to but can be done from the top without further dismantling.

    I have a Betacord 4400 that looks almost identical to this. The only issue is getting it to lace, which it will do only if I move the loading motor drive belt by hand forward then back a little before pressing play. • @video99couk

      The loading motor is not related to the diode. Is the motor spinning and belt slipping? If so, just replace the belt. If the motor is stalling, that's unusual, it could be the lacing mechanism needs lubricating or it could be a fault with the motor driver electronics or power supply.

    It appears that these particular Sanyo Betacord's are quite hard to get hold of that are in full working order and are not spares/repairs for upwards of 40 quid. When I bought my 5000 2 years ago there were quite a few that were listed as in good working order, but not so much now. I wouldn't have thought there was a demand for these recorders compared to VHS, and even VHS most people think you're old school when you mention them. Saying that, my original Betamax was a VTC9000 (or 9300) which weighed a ton (19kgs doesn't seem that heavy but it was like carrying a bag of cement in your arms lol), I had two, the original recorder which was all black and grey went to the tip years ago, and the second was an all grey colour but identical in every way. As the recorder was full of dust and needed alot of repair work I decided to give it away to anyone who wanted it, and I must've got about 10 replies in the space of an hour after advertising it on facebook, so it must mean there is still some interest in these machines, or maybe because it was free. By the end of the day someone came to pick it up.
    I wonder if the problem I have with my 5000 is that the tape belt has snapped rather than it being down to the power supply. When I try and press play, rewind, FF etc you hear a click sound and a "winding down" sound as if a fan is slowing down. The clock lights up but nothing happens when you select a number.

    • @video99couk

      First, select pause. Do the dropouts continue to roll or do they stop with the tape? If they continue to roll, it's not dropouts but arcing in the reel motor. If they are dropouts then maybe power the machine off, adjust the DOC control slightly with the metal tool, try it then. I'm not sure which way to turn it so you will have to experiment a little.

    Off topic slightly, but anyone know why so many VCRs (VHS rather) for sale on ebay don't include the remote?. I've noticed alot of sellers don't seem to have the remote control for some reason, which is pointless when all you can do on the machine as far as buttons go are the rewind, fastforward, play and record, anything else like tracking (which is an essential thing when playing old tapes) - particularly if it's a more modern VCR, will be consigned only to the remote. Back in the 90s pre ebay a brand new replacement remote from somewhere like Curry's was about £50.

      People just lose them. A £1 remote control from the pound shop will often fill in for many (but not all) of the missing features. I did a video about that a while ago. Most remotes within a brand will also work most functions of others of the same brand, though there are exceptions.

      Back tension rarely goes out on these machines. Bigger problem is that the tracking control isn't working. It's not likely to be the control itself, it means that the capstan servo is not locked. This may be due to a dirty audio/control head, or another fault in the capstan servo. A service manual is required and you need to know what you are doing.

    Did I hear you state they were assembled in Wales!! I think not, they were assembled in Lowestoft Suffolk my friend. I used to work there.
    The reason Sanyo called them Betacord was because Sanyo developed a unsuccessful format called Videocord. They decided to call their Beta machines Betacord and the unlacing for FF and REW from the VTC5000 was another slight change to Sony's always laced design so made more sense.

      Pinch roller failure is fairly unusual on these machines. I do have a single, brand new spare pinch roller for the VTC-M40, but I'm not quite sure where it is! The pinch roller changed somewhere between the VTC5000 and VTC-M series machines but I'm not sure if that change matters. I do know that the pinch roller on these is interchangeable with some VHS machines, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a generic video recorder pinch roller that will fit. What makes you believe the pinch roller has failed?
      The VTC-M40 is one of the very few Sanyo machines that seems to get through video heads, both video and hifi audio heads can wear on this model. I think they may have been built by Sony.

Considering I cannot see any sign of the any of the belts broken this does seem a possibility. God knows how I go about repairing that. Strange that something like that would happen on such a reliable Betacord like the 5000; maybe a tape caused it as most of the tapes came from long term storage in the loft, probably had alot of static on them being (I've heard not a good place to store tapes).

      The 5300 and 5400 are earlier models. I am less familiar with those, it's some years since I last worked on one. Perhaps upload a clip so I can see the effect.

    I have a Sanyo 7250 that will glitch and only give me a b&w picture. If I tap lightly on the top of the player, it'll jostle something back in place, but this isn't a permanent fix, as if I change the tape or power the unit off, it'll revert back to b&w.

      I've had dry joints on the bottom PCB in the colour circuitry before. I forget which is the colour processing chip part number, but just inspect closely for dry joints there. It's a simple repair.

      @@video99couk I took the shell off and tapped the delay line and noticed that would change the picture back to color. Does this info help narrow the issue?

    If it has propensity for dropouts then maybe the heads are knackered?

      Heads are OK, tape was mouldy.

      I have a few Sl-HF100 machines too. At some point I will do a video on how to replace the Hall Effect sensor in the head drum motor, because that's a common fault on a lot of the Sony models from the C20 onwards.

    what causes blue flashes on screen when playing beta tapes

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  5 років тому

      If the picture is fine in between the flashes then it's likely to be a timing incompatibility between your TV and the video recorder. Try another TV.

      I get rather a lot of mouldy tapes of almost every format. In fact there will be a mention of that very subject in a video I'm working on now.

    Can you do a video on how to use an oscilloscope to service a VCR?

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  5 років тому

      That's a huge subject. We're talking about knowing how to read video recorder schematics and trace signals through the systems. Others have done videos showing how to use an oscilloscope to align video heads though, that's not quite so complex as fault finding the circuitry.

    I though white streak on image means worn heads.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  5 років тому

      Yes, that can be a symptom of worn heads too. The effect from an arcing reel motor is a bit different because the white flashes jump around the screen even on pause, whereas with worn heads on pause, white flashes tend to stay fairly static.

    I own a VTC 5300. It's a great machine, but unfortunately, it no longer works.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  2 роки тому +1

      The VTC5300/5400 models came before the VTC5000/5150 etc. Sanyo's numbering system was strange. The 5300/5400 use an earlier mechanism which is heavier and has a lot more belts and pulleys. It's of the always-laced type, whereas later models unlaced during REW/FF. It's harder to find parts for the 5300/5400 machines and they are more involved to work on, but still possible.

    Every time I see 'professionals' recommending cotton buds I cringe. As I've been sent a few to sort with heads ripped off or damaged by owners using these to clean the tape path. Many don't realise the heads are NOT the huge silver drum but located in the slot in the centre on a spinning disc. Another no, no is loosening the tape guides ,maybe in the hope to get it to play better, when it needs a good service. This action will make playback poor and mis tracked on both it's own recordings and others from other machines.

    • @video99couk
      @video99couk  5 років тому +1

      You will note of course that I only used cotton buds well away from the video head, and used proper head cleaner sticks on the head drum, for just that reason. On my Toshiba Beta video I also mention that tape guide adjustment is not something to be carried out on a whim, even when a machine seems to be playing tapes badly: In the Toshiba case it was due to a bad pinch roller.
