There is a spitfire that takes off from North Weald, and blasts over the countryside flying at a low level.
Last year I was cycling up the hill from dial house up to the water tower at toot hill, and it zoomed over at what must have been only 200m or so above me. A great experience which made me feel like a wartime child.
Looks like a lovely walk. Just having a virtual look around and St. Andrews at Greensted claims to be the oldest wooden church in the world, with parts dating back to the sixth century. The area was home to the Tolpuddle Martyrs on their return to England and one of them married in the church. The cemetary also contains the grave of a twelfth century Crusader. Another one for my list!
I always feel suspended in time and away from the race while watching your videos. So thank you John.
thanks Spencer - that's a lot like how I feel when I'm out there
Another lovely walk in Essex. I knew Toot Hill and Ongar well. Love the clear, frosty day.
Thank you! My family and I have enjoyed your beautiful journey’s.
Thanks Richard
I thought I’d seen most your your walks John but somehow have missed this one. Without doubt my new favorite.
We buried my dad at Greenacres Epping Forest, just south of North Weald Airfield. The steam train passes by on weekend if I’m lucky, when there. I’ve read that they kept that stretch of track operational to transport the government to the secret nuclear bunker at Kelevdon Hatch. I love your channel. Keep on walking. All the best John.
Fascinating,Epping ongar railway is a must for me,interesting history
yes, the railway is fantastic, really must go there again soon
I stumbled upon your channel by accident a few months ago and since then your videos have become essential viewing. Like others, I find the combination of your visuals, commentary and music very therapeutic. Thank you.
+Simon Tiernan thanks Simon that's very kind of you
I have seen the signs for deer crossing the roads in this area but never seen any but you showed me they are there living wild amazing
Thanks John, I think your videos are the most calming 15 minutes of my week.
Ah that's wonderful to hear, thank you
A lovely crisp winter's day walk. The steam loco is a Gresley N2, a type synonymous with suburban London. They were generally fitted with condensing apparatus (the big pipe on the side) because they spent so much of their working life in tunnels. Sir Nigel Gresley is most famous for designing the streamlined A4 Pacific locomotives like the record breaking Mallard, but some think his true masterpiece was the ubiquitous N2.
that's brilliant Borderlands - many thanks indeed
Was there couple of days ago.... it’s great scenery
Along with all the others John thanks for a calming, shared walk. Used to live in Toothill (No. 20 Epping Road)......up until the age of about four. Remember walking to the top of a field that had a sort of moated pond around an 'island'. Was given to understand that Toothill got its name from the Germanic derived word for death 'Todt'. How true that is, I do not know but might explain the moated pond at the top of the field behind number 20. Idyllic childhood playing with the sand in the discarded 'coppers' previously used, along with the scrubbing board as clothes washing vessels. You will of course know about Banks Lane to the West, which is a continuation of part of a walk you have done on the roman road to Dunmow.
Walking out in the wilds is just so therapeutic. The best things are free eh! Another great film John :)
+MrLazyhead couldn't agree more MrLazyhead - many thanks

Marvellos walk John and Happy New Year to you. Now that you've seen the Lower Forest and North Weald Airfield, may I suggest you try the Essex Way route between Epping and Chipping Ongar which is a great walk.
Thanks voxley - funnily I was considering taking that route and now with your recommendation I have an excuse to return
John Rogers To whet your appetite, there is a video of that Essex Way walk on my channel.
There's also one on mine ;-) Love your channel by the way...

Great video to ring in the new year John! There's a great confluence of land(Epping Forest, stream trains) water(ponds, canals) and air(Hurricane fighters, Harris Hawks) on this walk.

Don’t blink cos you’ll miss ongar! Lived her over 50yrs
Hi there John, I do so love all your work like many others here and look forward to each video. BUT tell me did you make it in time to catch the last train from Ongar to Epping!!!! Take care Christopher of Hainault
+Christopher Stedall thanks so much Christopher. No I didn't make it to Ongar for the train - that ditch sent me on a longish detour so I disappointingly got a cab from Greensted to Epping- first time I've ever done that
Happy New year Jon so good to see the railway in use love the steam trains look forward to many more walks
+Norma Thomas thanks Norma - really appreciate all your input
Another great vid. Liking your use of OpenStreetMaps over Google Maps etc. - not only are they open source, they also have a lot more detail, especially for the walker.
