Important note: the original title of this video included the price tag of $70 because I thought that you could get a 4 x 4 floppy for 70 bucks but I realized that it was without the frame so I’ve changed the title and updated the link so now you can get the fabric and the frame And the title isn’t actually Clickbait lol
I was so excited at first, been wanting a floppy for years but can't justify the $
I wonder how hard it would be to make a frame for the fabric? I guess at that point I might as well sew my own fabric too lol
@@CinePhotoATL it’s not hard if you have a little woodworking or metalworking skills. Might be able to just make a frame from pvc pipe or sth. Then just add molton
the link for "with the frame" doesnt actually include the frame. I bought it based on what you said and its only the cloth! For $200! Might want to correct that.
Just a quick tip: be mindful of how you position the floppy in relation to the knuckle. Always place the weight on the side that's locking. This way, if the weight pulls downward, it will tighten the grip. Hope that makes sense! Otherwise, great video dude
You’re so right! Sometimes I remember easily which side is the correct side for that knuckle but that day I definitely didn’t lol thanks for watching though!
I saw that and was immediately going to post.. ANd yeah, great video - great information!
Tight to the right indeed
Pro tip, you can get one of those project boards kids use for science fairs in black. It stands on its own, is much cheaper, and is light enough to be out almost anywhere
ya know you have a really good point there! Might have to make a full video on a kit like this!
Also love the matthews road rags kit for portable frames that can fold up and easily fit into a case.
For sure! That’s a great kit!
great point about not knocking out the level in the room - sometimes that gives everything the ambience. not every piece has to be a netflix doc in a warehouse lol
Fully agree! Thanks a ton!
those crocs made my day. also i've never thought of a 40x40, that is genius
Hahaha I just started recording and then realized I was wearing them so had to keep them on😂
Hey! Great video! First time ive been to the channel! I just love the Yamaha’s on their side like the old NS10s 😂
I have to say, your music was so good I had to rewind to hear what you were saying. That first song is absolutely amazing! (Also, great little video with good practical examples).
love the video...background music is too loud and i know you noticed
Yeah gotta listen in my phone before I do my final export🫨 was kicking myself about that earlier today
This is an excellent Video and I can't wait to share it with my Film Students!!!
Ayyyy thanks a ton!🙏🙏
Never understood what the negative fill actually did until this video thank you for sharing!
Haha you’re amazing! Thanks bro!
“Kachow” 😂 Love the vid man! So much value! 👏
Heck yeah! thanks so much Ben!
croc life is the only life. great video
Haha thanks man! 🙏🏼
best lighting tip i've ever received from a guy wearing lightning red crocs
Heck yeah I’ll take that! Feels like a pretty low bar but I’m not mad at all
Super video. Just as s side note, the information and presentation is good enough that you probably don't need the elevator music in the background. I think it just takes way from the quality of the video, but that's just my opinion. Loved the video though, new sub.
Hey Mark! Thanks a ton for watching! Yeahhh the music sounded good on my headphones but I missed the mark on the final export! Sorry about that but I really appreciate the kind words and the sub! Been watching your stuff for a while now! Big fan!
@@edwardcrockett My older videos are filled with questionable music choices, I eventually just dumped the music all together. I think it's a hard one to get right for this type of content.
@@markwiemels yeah I've done no music on some! I just love a little chill jazz in the background but it's gotta be at the right level obviously 😂 I'll probably ditch it for the next video
Keep up the videos. Always valuable insights, man.
Yooo thank you! Anything you’d like me to talk about?
FINNALLYYY!
I’ll keep saying it - this is the ultimate tool for that cinematic look!
#FLOPPYTEAM
Let's gooo! it's the freakin best!
Great job overall. I have a nit-pick that I feel I need to address. I would have flipped the position the key light based on where the natural window light is coming from. So instead of the light coming from screen left (hitting the right side of your face), I would have it coming from screen right (hitting the left side of your face). This would make the overall shot look less like you "lit" the shot and more like a natural extension of the already available light. It would essentially leave the final image looking like there were no lights in the scene at all. Everything else I would leave the same.
We recently hired a pretty established videographer for some BTS work on a documentary I’m working on. When he was roaming around our set and getting some bts and b-roll that might be used, he asked what the heck is this thing(floppy). And unfortunately, this is common with the new guard. Not knowing what a floppy is the same as watching people use lanterns as soft boxes. Do what most of us have done and assist other established working professionals in the beginning. This isn’t a race, some of my best memories/experiences were in the 8 to 12 year of learning on sets. You establish yourself, your look/style from these experiences; so much more than you would going on your own. Do a little research in your city and lean hard into doing anything possible to get hired by Studio’s, working freelancers, etc. (well… not anything 🤓)
heck yeah! that's such good advice! Working with people better than me is how I've learned 90% of what I know... Might have to make a video about that honestly!
@@edwardcrockett 🙌🏼
Love the red Crocs 😂
lol I wear them all the time 😂
Who doesn't use Croc's ?
Good video, but remember for the C-stand: right tight left loose
Preciate that! and yes I know! it's a stepped grip head though so I didn't think too much about it but I always think about it on set!
I disagree with the quick text frame. I think the room light on the back of your head helps place you in the room and grounds it. Too often with lighting some poeple forget to integrate their subjects into the environment they're in and it starts to look pretty sourcy. This is a lovely little video and I think negative fill is highly underrated in first time lighting kits. Thank you for sharing! Also Cars is dope. I'm right there with you.
Okay well fair point! Honestly I was feeling a little self conscious about how the lighting turned out so I added that just in case but you make a good point!
Also heck yeah I love cars! KACHOW
@@edwardcrockett totally understand! You did great though. It’s genuinely helpful and will be good info for anyone new to lighting. Keep up the great work!
@@SamWelker really appreciate that man!🙏🏼
its look more cinematic when face shadow its on the left...the way you see an image..it mean the light should on the right
interesting take! I haven't heard that before!
thank you
how is a floppy underrated when it's used on almost every professional shoot ever?
Straight to the point. I´m definitely gonna try it and seems a good solution even when you´re by yourself. Cheers from Brazil. ;o)
Yooo thanks so much! Really appreciate you watching!
KA CHOW
yeah boyyyy
loved the vid, very interesting. As a solo filmmaker in Paris i'm always struggling with a light, efficient gear. Since @absolutelyeverything talked about the project boards I may have to see if it could fit my needs!
Heck yeah! I feel that! There are more solo filmmakers out there than people think!
Easy way to make a floppy from a flag is buy some black velvet fabric from any fabric store and just clamp to the flag or sow some Velcro to each side.. I do it all the time, No need to buy expensive gear for something like that. Nice video by the way.
Great tip! I’ll check it out for sure!
Great tip. Nice one
Heck yeah! Thanks again ton!
If you're looking for cheap & easy: Buy an "Avenger Foam / Styrene Fork with 5/8" Pin" ($45) and a black foamcore board to skewer onto it. It's lightweight and only semi-DIY looking. You're welcome.
ayyy i love hacks like this! I need to make a video about little hacks like this because there's tons of them I just haven't talked about them!
I love this
love the video but man the background music was making me chuckle how loud it is lol
Same I gotta dial it in better! It sounds great on my headphones and studio monitors but I need to listen on a phone before I make my final export
@@edwardcrockett don't worry man I do it all the time when im editing my short films and stuff lol, always takes me like 2 or 3 exports before I finally dial it in properly
@@AlfieWeaverLeonGale next one will be better for sure!
This video covers a very important topic. But the music is too loud - it’s a bit distracting
yeah I know sorry about that! I missed it somehow but I will fix it for the next video!
70$ only gets you the fabric tho, not the frame :/
Noooo I had no idea! Okay I’m changing that and the title ASAP! So sorry!!
Okay just added one with a frame! Sadly it is more like $200🫠 im freakin sorry about that though cause I though the link I used had the frame too
@@edwardcrockettregardless thanks for the info
What the size of that ifootage lantern?
not 100% sure but I believe it's their smallest one
metrics is here: 40" = 1m
I will try to start including metrics in there if I can! sorry about that!
Do you have links to the frame for these?
I don’t know if they make just the 40x40 frame but there’s links to the frames and flags in the description!
@@edwardcrockett I'm not seeing anything that would work in the lists in the description. How would you recommend setting up a 4x4 without a frame?
Bro so sorry! I fully thought that the link I provided included the frame but when I realized it didn’t I changed it out and changed the title so it doesn’t say $70! Totally my bad on that one!
Your Music is way too loud.
yeah I know! sorry about that! It sounded fine in the headphones but I will reference on a phone from now on!
I have to agree, it’s super distracting. I don’t understand why background music is making a comeback on UA-cam. It’s so not necessary. It made sense back in the day to cover up a loud noise floor, but now it’s just an excuse to justify an Epidemic Sound subscription.
Agh the links are US. And uk amazon is going huh?
Nice bro! I love the 40x40 flags. Sold all my 48x48 and haven't really noticed a difference. 40x40 is so much more manageable. I use this same method in a lot of corporate buildings to shape the light. Great breakdown video!
Yooo thanks Joel! Those 40x40s really are the truth🤯
I know it was an accident but i actually like the loud background music lol, I wish more people did
hahah well yeah I think there's probably a middle ground but I totally missed it😂
Lighting is looking up so a plus. On the debit side is the 'look' of the clunky DJI type lav mike. It just shrieks 'novice' to me. A cheapish small lavcan look a lot more discrete and needn't cost a fortune. No criticism on sound quality (it's fine) just a suggestion on visual aesthetics (I'm starting to hate the 'lame and lazy' DJI mike look).
It's not really 'bad' but just doesn't look professional IMO. Totally hiding the lav looks best, but less essential as we all know it's important (eg typically shown for ENG).
The BG music is killing me, i had to stop watching
haha yeah sorry about that! i over did it with this one...
Is this a tutorial video or a music video ?? damn !! Low the music volume bro.
Yeahhhh my bad on that😂
I get what you are trying to show, but your room and lighting doesn't look flattering. The camera focus keeps pulsating. Yeah, the info is okay, but you need to deliver it better, especially if you are selling it to filmmakers.
hey man I appreciate the feedback but my main priority is to provide the value to those watching and so I'm going to use autofocus and shoot in the room I have available to communicate that value. Not trying to shoot a movie out here
AHHHH IT'S NOT RIGHTY TIGHTY!!!!
okay you're not wrong BUT it's a teethed head to it's not as necessary i feel
@@edwardcrockett would be good to test 👍
@@edwardcrockettwhat do you mean teethed head? Don’t mean to be blunt, but for safety, if there is weight boomed out on a c stand it should ALWAYS have the knuckle on the right hand side. Just like how the weight should always go out over the biggest leg and be sandbagged. Just proper practice for safe sets. If you’re working by yourself you can get away with it, but don’t do it when you’re working with others. You’ll get called out on it, and might lose future work.
Super click bait
How so?
@@edwardcrockett Nevermind i saw you changed it.
@@16sixstudios yeah I understand what you meant now! I didn't realize that the product I linked didn't include the frame! that's my bad!
@@edwardcrockett it happens man. But I agree these are definitely great to have in your kit.
@@16sixstudios preciate that bro!
